Historia
If you’ve ever felt ineffective, invisible, or inarticulate, chances are you weren’t actually any of those things. Those feelings may instead have been the result of a lack of awareness we all seem to have for how our words, actions, and even our mere presence affect other people. In You Have More Influence Than You Think, social psychologist Vanessa Bohns draws from her original research to illustrate why we fail to recognize the influence we have, and how that lack of awareness can lead us to miss opportunities or accidentally misuse our power.

Brilliant book. The title says it all.
Revisado: 02-18-24
I have read a lot of books on influencing, and this is by far the best. Also the easiest to implement, with the best description of how bias and power differentials can complicate things. Wish I could have given 6 stars!

Historia
What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace—feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit. In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted.

Simple message and yet a profound shift in mindset
Revisado: 07-03-23
A simple message and yet such a profound shift in mindset that I will come back to this book again and again, so that each of the key lessons can seep into my soul. I hope I remember to ground myself in this philosophy every day for the rest of my life.

Historia
Exercise is health-enhancing and life-extending, yet many of us feel it's a chore. But as Kelly McGonigal reveals, it doesn't have to be. Movement can and should be a source of joy. Through her trademark blend of science and storytelling, McGonigal draws on insights from neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and evolutionary biology, as well as memoirs, ethnographies, and philosophers. She shows how movement is intertwined with some of the most basic human joys, including self-expression, social connection, and mastery.

I’m a huge fan. This does not disappoint
Revisado: 11-27-20
I’m such a fan of Ms McGonigal, and this book does not disappoint. Her research is impeccable, and brought to life by stories from others, and her own heartfelt examples.
This book helped me finally understand why I am drawn to outdoors exercise but not group classes. Highly recommend it!
Do check out her brilliant book on willpower, too, which is a great companion to this book.

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Ugh...
Revisado: 11-27-20
This guy has had sex. Quite a lot of sex. With ladies. Multiple ladies. Sooooo many ladies. At first I cringed, then I laughed. (Did someone tease him about being a virgin once upon a time??)
Despite the fits of giggles, the misogyny that seethes throughout this book is no joke.
There are certainly some useful concepts here, packaged a bit differently to all the other self-help guides, but this is undermined when illustrated with a litany of faults of his “psycho exes” (and even worse, his wife).
Makes it hard to buy what he’s saying about values and self-awareness.

Great storytelling. I laughed & cried.
Revisado: 06-15-20
Barb is a masterful storyteller. Her warm, highly relatable book is about what happens when lovingly co-created wedding vows meet the reality of marriage. I laughed, cried. A great read about what it’s like to find love, then fight to hang on to it. Highly recommended!

Stunningly beautiful, powerful, practical
Revisado: 10-07-17
What a gorgeous gem of a book. It is beautiful, powerful, and practical.
I've been recommending it to everyone, and buying copies for some women close to me. I hope we can get together and discuss how we're putting it to use.
I plan to revisit this every year. There's just so much to learn here.
