Historia
In The Small and the Mighty, Sharon McMahon proves that the most remarkable Americans are often ordinary people who didn’t make it into the textbooks. Not the presidents, but the telephone operators. Not the aristocrats, but the schoolteachers. Through meticulous research, she discovers history’s unsung characters and brings their rich, riveting stories to light for the first time.

Hope in America
Revisado: 04-22-25
The stories of our country I wish I learned in history classes growing up - I would have actually enjoyed them! It makes me sad I can’t teach this book as an English teacher because of the ignorance which currently exists among too many parents. I do hope I can inspire future readers who will choose to pick up books such as these on their own accord.

Historia
It is November 25, 1960, and the bodies of three beautiful, convent-educated sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. El Caribe, the official newspaper, reports their deaths as an accident. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents of General Raphael Leonidas Trujillo's dictatorship.

Wish I could like it but I really didn’t
Revisado: 01-27-25
I thought the story was a bit painful. Perhaps it would have been better in Spanish (not that I understand Spanish), but in English I thought it was overly descriptive and lacked interest. Every single action, thought, space was described in too much detail. I also struggled with the narration. There were several places in which mouth noises were not eliminated. It almost made it so I could not continue it made me cringe so much. I RARELY write a bad review - this is definitely one.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Hits you deep in your soul
Revisado: 10-01-24
What a beautiful story. As a Catholic, I feel like there is a kinship there on a special level. I felt as if Dugoni understands the beauty and pain woven into much of Catholicism and Catholic Schools. Thank you for showing both sides. The chemistry between the three main characters should not have worked, but it did; and it was heartwarming. Although the story had moments of predictability I would recommend it to anyone searching for a moment of good in this world.

Best suspense I’ve experienced in a while
Revisado: 09-23-24
Loved the combination of characters and how they intertwined to create this suspenseful and compelling story. I loved everything from the setting to the juxtaposition of rich and poor. There were many characters - each interesting and well developed - but I never struggled to understand his or her place in the storyline. Thank you for a story I didn’t want to stop listening to.

Another beautiful Klune tale
Revisado: 09-11-24
I think Klune has just a beautiful take on the world. This book has an interesting thought on what life after death could look like. I do think he makes a majorly disproportionate amount of his characters gay which isn’t at all a deal breaker it just makes it less believable. The story and characters are great though.

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Such a sweet, yet complex read. This family drew gave you a seat at their table and I never wanted to get up. Despite the characters’ flaws, I still found myself rooting for familial love to conquer all right up to the end.

Interesting concept average story
Revisado: 01-24-24
I thought the overall concept of this story was really interesting, but the story itself was not as interesting. It lacked depth and was a bit campy. I think the fact that I am really not a fan of this voice artist (quite over dramatic - she always sounds like she should be narrating a bad soap opera imo) didn’t help.

Beautiful storytelling with blah ending
Revisado: 01-16-24
Unique book in its approach to tell an epic story. It was really a bunch of short stories each of which set up the next. Some were more compelling than others, but all were enjoyable. I was left underwhelmed by the end however. It was almost as if the author was tired of telling the story and cut it off too quickly. Disappointing.

Good concept left short by poor character choices
Revisado: 01-06-24
I listened all the way through to the author’s notes at the end. I appreciated her thought process, research, and historical elements she thought to incorporate. However, I think the story fell short when she allowed both female characters to spend way too much of their relationships focusing on physical attraction and sex when they were both intelligent, driven women who had relationships which should been focused on a much deeper level. It could have been so much more.

Historia
Liz Murray was born to loving but drug-addicted parents in the Bronx. In school she was taunted for her dirty clothing and lice-infested hair, eventually skipping so many classes that she was put into a girls' home. At age 15, Liz found herself on the streets when her family finally unraveled. She learned to scrape by, foraging for food and riding subways all night to have a warm place to sleep. Then, when Liz's mother died of AIDS, she decided to take control of her own destiny.

Heartbreaking tale of those who fall through the cracks
Revisado: 12-27-23
Liz’s story was hard to read and infuriating to listen to at times because you want to shake her parents for their complete lack of ability to parent (or even adult), but at times you want to shake Liz for her ability to love them unconditionally. However, it is this same trait which probably helps her survive as well. It is also one the reader could learn from - I think most of us could stand to judge less and accept and love more. It is also a story which highlights the massive flaws is our overworked and unstaffed welfare, education, and foster care systems. If these agencies were staffed by educated and dedicated individuals like those Liz stumbled upon in her final school, we would have fewer falling through the cracks. However, this would require a complete overhaul of our systems including pay and who is hired for those roles - something unlikely to ever happen unfortunately.
