Much better than the last one in the series.

Much better than book 14. I had already purchased this one before finishing book 14 and expected to be disappointed, but was not. As good as any in the series.

What an improvement over book 1 in the series.
Revisado: 01-24-22
I got onto this series by an auto recommend by my local audio (free) library. The only one available from the library was book 10. Great story and narration, after finishing I purchased book 1 in the series. Poor choice, Scott Brick narrated and inserted his typical attempt to inflate drama in the narration and the story just dragged. I skipped book 2 because the author used the name Michael Lawson (same as book 1) and Scott Brick narrated. But, I knew there had to be a good listen in the series because I thoroughly enjoyed book 10. So, I purchased House Rules. The author's name got shortened to Mike and the narration leaped with Joe Barrett. Still not as good as book 10, but improved enough over book one to keep me locked into the series. One thing I see between book 3 and book 10 is the authors ability to tell a compelling story without trying to just fill pages with words and drift.

Too much Drama, served to just add a lot of words.
Revisado: 12-22-21
The listen was just poor to mediocre as an Audiobook in general. I was fortunate to have Book 10 in the series prompt as a recommended book from my local library. I go through a lot of audiobooks and the local library has a pretty good selection and they are free. Book 10 in the series has two notable changes. 1. The best is Scott Brick is not the narrator. I think of Scott Brick as a Drama Queen. In fact, I have passed over a lot of books simply because Scott Brick is the narrator. 2. The author, first two in the series written by Michael Lawson, then from three the writer is Mike Lawson. Not sure how dropping the more formal Michael to Mike was inspired, but book 10 is much improved. The narration by Joe Barrett is more than just improved, it is great. I give book 10 five stars on story and performance. The author dropped all the drama and just told a great story. I couldn't stop until the end. No needless attempt to insert drama about how everyone feels, recriminations, and second guessing. Joe Barrett has a pleasant voice and he does a marvelous job.

Great sequel to the series. I have them all in my library. Prefect blend of suspense and action, mix of nostalgia and memories of Eddie teachings and Michael's upbringing. Never a dull period and Michael Kramer does his usual excellent narration. Try this one, you will not be disappointed.

Worst Connelly book of all. Did he write this one

I am very disappointed, just not worth the time to listen.
I grabbed this one based on past works by MC. I have all his books in my library and have listened to most a couple of times. Next time, I will be more careful with my purchases.

Should have dug deeper into the reviews.
Revisado: 03-30-21
Failed to look at more reviews. This is just like the TV series Person of Interest. Just a couple of episodes and I lost interest.
Bad story compiled with bad narration makes for a long book. This series lacked suspense, I could most likely write the next chapter before finishing with one. The further along the more unlikely the story becomes. The series is filled with made up drama. For lack of inspiration, the author grinds on and on continuously repeating the basis for the story and fails miserabley to make the book interesting. More and more of the same. Maybe the author is working full time writing for day time TV and spitting out dull books after hours. For the positive reviewers, you should try Vince Flynn, Thomas Perry and Tom Wood.

Just not up to Connelly standards.
Revisado: 03-17-21
The worst of all the Connelly books. I really looked forward to listing to this one, but was very disappointed and actually wanted it to hurry to the end. The story was weak, not at all believable. The Author dragged our Hero through one implausable situation to the next in almost every chapter. What I disliked the most what the Author's injecting his political views and bias into the story, along with his portrayal of the police and justice system being so dumb. The Author made our Hero a whining victim and the story had no suspense. If the next one is this bad, I will return for a refund.

With a good narrator, would be a fair short story
Revisado: 05-27-20
This book should be paired down from novel to short story. Just too much recriminations, detailed weaknesses of our hero, repeats of how much he loved his daughter, etc. Two steps forward and one back. Our hero is lost in a fog only to suddenly have planned the greatest of all feats. I wanted to like this, but just couldn't. The narrator graded on me like finger nails on a blackboard. I wanted so much to tell him to just read and stop trying to inject drama and excitement into the story. I think of this narrator as a "Drama Queen" and the author as one who gets paid by the word.
I listened to the end, but wished I had just stopped and returned this one. I seldom ever return even a mediocre one, but any worse and it would have been in the refund bin. Just wasted a credit.
So, don't waste a credit.
