Private Detective Cormoran Strike is contacted by a worried father whose son, Will, has gone to join a religious cult in the depths of the Norfolk countryside. Couldn't Finish
Revisado: 01-05-25
Although I have enjoyed a couple of the other Strike novels, I couldn't get through this one. Extremely slow. The whole "cult" plot felt so oppressive.... Maybe I was depressed when I _started_ listening, but I definitely was after a couple of hours,

This Writer Needs a Hardass Editor
Revisado: 01-05-25
Plots are okay; central character is underdeveloped. There are many Many MANY bothersome prose errors: "neither...were"; confusion of imply/infer; confusion of authoritarian/authoritative; constant, very obvious dangling modifiers of the "walking along the beach, the sun rose" variety. Rather than using "conflict" or "inconsistency," a new word is invented -- "confliction." REALLY???? Is this writer so hard to work with that no editor will work with him/her??

Historia
Twelve years ago, eight friends ran an exclusive group at university: the Masquerade Murder Society. The mysteries they solved may have been grisly, and brilliantly staged, but they were always fictional—until their final Christmas Masquerade, when one of the group disappeared, never to be seen again. Now our privileged young cast of old university friends are summoned to the depths of Scotland for a Christmas-themed masquerade party. But all are hiding something deep below the surface that could make or break their careers.

Some interesting details and plot twists, but characters not really believable; in addition, there's no one to really identify with and root for, as the bodies pile up.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author William Kent Krueger delivers yet another "punch-to-the-gut blend of detective story and investigative fiction" (Booklist) as Cork O'Connor and his son Stephen work together to uncover the truth behind the tragic plane crash of a senator on Desolation Mountain and the mysterious disappearances of several first responders. This is a heart-pounding and devastating mystery the scope and consequences of which go far beyond what father or son could ever have imagined....

Classic Vimes
Revisado: 05-16-24
Early on — Vimes meets Carrot and Lady Sybil and defeats a dragon. Recording quality is “vintage” and read speed is better if slightly accelerated IMHO, but the story is pure Pratchett perfection.

Historia
It has been an eventful morning for Agnes Sharp and the other inhabitants of Sunset Hall, a house share for the old and unruly in the sleepy English countryside. Although they have had some issues (misplaced reading glasses, conflicting culinary tastes, decreasing mobility, and unruly grandsons), nothing prepares them for an unexpected visit from a police officer with some shocking news. A body has been discovered next door. Everyone puts on a long face for show, but they are secretly relieved the body in question is not the one they’re currently hiding in the shed (sorry, Lillith).

Wanted to like it; will return
Revisado: 05-11-24
While the personal and professional backstories (twins; police and secret service work) make the characters interesting and lend some serious moments, the current situations strain credulity. I thought this book would be similar to the somewhat wacky crime-solving of Osman's elderly crew (Thursday Murder Club et al), but I can only suspend disbelief so far. Edwina and Hetty are particularly over the top. Did finish listening to it, but wouldn't re-listen; if a book is good, I can enjoy it more than once. I just "got to the end of" this one.

Historia
It’s a dream assignment. Former Senator Dorothy Gibson, aka that woman, is the most talked-about person in the country right now, though largely for the wrong reasons. As an independent candidate for President of the United States, Dorothy split the vote and is being blamed for the shocking result. After her very public defeat, she’s retreated to her home in rural Maine, inviting her ghostwriter to join her.

Disappointed
Revisado: 03-08-24
Obviously launched from reality— a woman loses the Presidential race to a man vaguely described as awful, incompetent, a nightmare. She retreats to a cabin in the north, hires a ghostwriter, and then together they solve a murder. Prose is competent, but ending disappointing. New info half-revealed about narrator’s past torpedoes her budding relationship with a security guard (which seemed kinda junior high and extraneous all along) but sets up possible sequel.

Far more chatty than a classic Stout; maybe the setting and all the family characters brought this on, but it would have been better if author resisted!

Historia
The year is 1910, and in the small and seemingly sleepy English municipality of Haxford, there’s a new chief police inspector. At first, the dapper and unflappable Pignon Scorbion strikes something of an odd figure among the locals, who don’t see a need for such an exacting investigator. But it isn’t long before Haxford finds itself very much in need of a detective. Luckily, Scorbion and the local barber are old acquaintances, and the barbershop employs a cast of memorable characters who are nothing less than enthralled by the enigmatic new chief police inspector.

Un-listenable
Revisado: 12-02-22
I made two good-faith attempts to listen to this book, but the narrator's inexplicable pauses, both for narrator and most characters, drove me mad. "Dare I ask....what brings you...to this conclusion?" Not the rhythm of the language, not for suspense value, not for breathing, just needless pauses. Can't bear it.
