Historia
Firsthand accounts from Japanese WW II soldiers, sailors, and pilots who fought in the battle for Iwo Jima and survived. Some were evacuated before the Marines landed, and others were taken as prisoners of war. The Japanese army and navy combatants are given a voice to share their experiences in the battle that coined the phrase "uncommon valor was a common virtue".

An Excellent Compelling Listen
Revisado: 07-13-23
Anyone interested in the history of the Pacific War should read this. It humanizes the Japanese sailors and soldiers depicted and should provide insight into the Japanese perspective on the war. One of my favorites of a long list of books I have read on the war.

Historia
This highly regarded war memoir was a best seller in both Japan and the United States during the 1960s and has long been treasured by historians for its insights into the Japanese side of the surface war in the Pacific. The author was a survivor of more than one hundred sorties against the Allies and was known throughout Japan as the Unsinkable Captain.

Very enjoyable

Very interesting to hear the Japanese perspective. And, an incredible story to boot. I would’ve liked to hear the aftermath but apparently Captain Hara ended the story where he felt it was appropriate.

An excellent living breathing history
Revisado: 11-08-22
The final chapter explains how meticulously this history was put together via letters, interviews, and, other historical accounts. The details truly put the flesh to the bones of an amazing group of individuals who fought and in many cases died for their country, and sadly were never able to truly put their experiences behind them. It was very well done and in all ways an excellent book.
