I seem to remember Fields saying Third Don was the end of the story. Generally speaking, when an author doesn't want to continue a story, you can tell.

It seems to me the entire point of this book is to destroy a universe the author resented coming back to. Characters from the original trilogy are discarded. The story culminates in new characters flirting while an original character is dying in front of them.

The complete destruction of the narrative up to this point is celebrated.

I felt Fields' bitterness toward her own work throughout this novel and while there remains a chance for a future story of rebuilding to be excellent, I'm as hesitant to read it as Fields likely is tho write it.

If Third Don isn't where our story ends, I hope this is. Fields can move on to a work they like more, and apply the ample talents they possess to something new.

That all said, the story taken in its own terms is told well, Guard Four is a sympathetic and relatable new protagonist, and excluding the final chapter I feel her decisions and reactions make sense. In a world of poorly executed good ideas, this is a beautifully executed travesty.

I honestly wish they hadn't written this book, or perhaps held off on doing so until this story could've been told without the clear loathing Fields has for coming back to Ardulum.

Somewhere a Nintendo/Game Freak lawyer is having an aneurysm because of this book, I am certain.

Did not anticipate what I thought was a gag becoming a main plot point.

Like other books by the author (Seveneves), Fall is several different novels laced together. This is both good and bad, as Fall lingers on the latter Bitworld story enough to really tell it but leaves the Ameristan story and it's (admittedly slightly heavyhanded) worldbuilding by the wayside far too quickly. Ultimately you're left to wonder if many of the stories and conflicts really mattered aside from those in Bitworld. Maybe that's intentional, like the vague implication that the "real world" is itself a Bitworld that gets little beyond a tease in your mind. Still, at the end, Fall feels like it's three or four distinct novels packaged together on loose connective tissue.

If this is how the Athena adventures end, which I hope it is not, it was a remarkable finish. Combining classical characters with a dose of social commentary and the unique and wonderful narrative style of the Athena Club made for a perfect capstone to an amazing trilogy.

Seriously this was the most "me" a book has ever been. From the lesbian lead to the super space mercenaries, Alcyone is practically tailored to geeky gay girls, which is in my estimation a horribly underserved demographic.
