Historia
“Because she was my mother, the death of zaftig good-time gal Renay Corren is newsworthy to me, and I treat it with the same respect and reverence she had for, well, nothing. A more disrespectful, trash talking woman was not to be found.” So began Andy Corren's unforgettable obituary for his mother, Renay Mandel Corren, in her hometown paper The Fayetteville Observer, a tribute that went on to touch the hearts of millions around the globe. In his brief telling of the life and legend that was Renay, Andy captured only a slice of his loving and fabulously unconventional mother.

Historia
Ben Franklin lingers in our lives and in our imaginations. One of only two non-presidents to appear on US currency, Franklin was a founder, statesman, scientist, inventor, diplomat, publisher, humorist, and philosopher. He believed in the American experiment, but Ben Franklin’s greatest experiment was…Ben Franklin. In that spirit of betterment, Eric Weiner embarks on an ambitious quest to live the way Ben lived. Not a conventional biography, Ben & Me is a guide to living and thinking well, as Ben Franklin did.

a compelling and Earnest look at a very interesting human being
Revisado: 07-30-24
I really really liked this book primarily for its emphasis on Ben Franklin the human being --- fascinating interesting and deeply deeply flawed. it all came out in this book.
there is a part of me that wishes it were possible to simply worshipfully adore someone like franklin, but that's not who he really was. the author did an excellent job of showing all of the sides of Franklin --- the beautiful the zany but also the ugly and wretched
this is a book with a lot of good life lessons I highly recommend it

Historia
“Can I kiss you?” It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.

painful beautiful hinest
Revisado: 02-07-24
a powerful read, earnest and painfully honest.
his work will relate to not only LGBTQ people but really to anyone who has struggled with generational trauma and feelings estranged from one's surrounding and)or context
speaking of context - I adored Elliott's depictions if place, specific places. this geographic detail made the book come alive for me

Historia
If Jesus is God, then God is a grunt—the humble, hardy folk placed at the bottom of the social hierarchy who are relied on to accomplish the dirtiest, most difficult (and most thankless) work. This is good news for millions of Christian soldiers and veterans in the U.S. because they have had to make an impossible choice, with no perceivable middle ground, between patriot and pacifist. Author Logan Isaac offers an opportunity for GIs, veterans, and those close to them to read Christian traditions as a soldier would—by and through the lived experiences of military service.

challenging important book
Revisado: 06-15-22
a powerful book, and one that worked well in audio form.
the author expressed with clarity and conviction, in the salty idiom of a soldier, why the issue of wat is not a simple matter for Christians and how painful our societal stereotypes if veterans can be.
read this book with an open mind and i can guarantee your thinking will be challenged onany issues.

Historia
When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction, and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

awesome book!!!
Revisado: 10-29-17
Incredible book. I learned a lot about this pioneering female golfer, co-founder of the LPGA and advocate for cancer awareness in the 1950's when many refused to even say the word "cancer." Oh... and she won 2 gold and 1 silver I track and field in the 1932 Olympics, and so much more.
To me --- her ethos was a blend of Mohamad Ali's ego (coupled with the ability to back up) and Jim Thorpe's multi-sport athletic abilities along with her own mix of being a 2nd generation American who grew up poor in East Texas (which meant she also had more than a bit of baggage on issues like race and class, some good some bad).
And there is the issue of sexual orientation in her life, due to the extreme homophobia of her day she was not open about it, but today it appears clear that she was bisexual, something that this book discusses to the extent possible given the scanty historic record. Still it was helpful to see how she found ways to make her life work at this difficult time in history .
She died way too young from cancer, in her 40's, but her life is one that should be remembered.
I highly recommend this book.
