Historia
Neal Carey is not your usual private eye. A graduate student at Columbia University, he grew up on the streets of New York, usually on the wrong side of the law. Then he met a P.I. who introduced him to the Bank, an exclusive institution with a sideline in keeping its wealthy clients happy and out of trouble. They pay Neal's college tuition, and Neal gets an education that can't be found in any textbook, from learning how to trail a suspect to mastering the proper way to search a room. Now it's payback time.

Historia
An unmatched guide to the religious dimensions of American politics, Jeff Sharlet journeys into corners of our national psyche where others fear to tread. The Undertow is both inquiry and meditation, an attempt to understand how, over the last decade, reaction has morphed into delusion, social division into distrust, distrust into paranoia, and hatred into fantasies—sometimes realities—of violence.

Rambling, incoherent, uninteresting
Revisado: 12-22-23
This book was mostly a waste of time and money. Except for the first chapter, it is a haphazard kaleidoscope of various and sundry mentally ill people who are delusional, pathetic, hapless and boring. There are no explainations or insight offered. There is little attempt at analysis, theorizing, or prognostication. I had the impression that the author had a vision that was taking shape when he began the book, but at some point, he gave up on it and instead just cobbled together a stream of chance encounters and experiences he had on his road trip across country. I did not learn anything from listening to this book. It was a disappointment.

Historia
At Slough House - MI5’s London depository for demoted spies - Brexit has taken a toll. The “slow horses” have been pushed further into the cold, Slough House has been erased from official records, and its members are dying in unusual circumstances, at an unusual clip. No wonder Jackson Lamb’s crew is feeling paranoid. But are they actually targets? With a new populist movement taking hold of London’s streets and the old order ensuring that everything’s for sale to the highest bidder, the world’s a dangerous place for those deemed surplus.

Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Historia
London’s Slough House is where the washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what’s left of their failed careers. The “"low horses", as they’re called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated here. But now the slow horses have a chance at redemption. An old Cold War-era spy is found dead on a bus outside Oxford, far from his usual haunts. The despicable, irascible Jackson Lamb is convinced Dickie Bow was murdered. As the agents dig into their fallen comrade’s circumstances, they uncover a shadowy tangle of ancient Cold War secrets.

Historia
The decline and fall of Rudy Giuliani, from “America’s Mayor” to public spectacle, has all the makings of a modern Shakespearean tragedy. Those who know Giuliani, whose tough leadership and even tougher politics helped revitalize New York City in the 1990s and lead the country through 9/11, have stood by and watched with incredulity as he put himself at the heart of impeachment charges against the President.

Mildly interesting...
Revisado: 03-21-22
I found this piece interesting, but not terribly illuminating. More of what I have known and expected. The mystery Giuliani who has become a parody of himself and a train wreck of a human being cannot be resolved in such a short sketch. The parts of the book that zeroed in on the relationship between Ailes and Rudy and their world view were the best.

Historia
The Ministry for the Future is a masterpiece of the imagination, using fictional eyewitness accounts to tell the story of how climate change will affect us all. Its setting is not a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, but a future that is almost upon us - and in which we might just overcome the extraordinary challenges we face.

Great ideas, uneven narration
- De depthpsychologist en 12-09-20
Disappointing
Revisado: 03-18-22
The first chapter was very good. It was all down hill from there. Not much of a story; more like some litany of wishful thinking. Cardboard characters. Not much plot. Some good ideas but not realistic or convincing. I struggled to get thru this novel, hoping for some redeeming value that was never realized. The narration with the multiple voices and accents was poor and actually detracted from what story there was.

Historia
The Deerslayer is the first of the Leatherstocking Tales of James Fenimore Cooper. Here we meet Natty Bumppo as a young man living in upstate New York in the early 1740s. The action begins as Bumppo, called "Deerslayer", and his friend Hurry Harry approach Lake Glimmerglass, or Oswego, where the trapper Thomas Hutter lives with his daughters, the beautiful Judith and the feeble-minded Hetty. Hutter's floating log fort is attacked by Iroquois Indians, and the two frontiersmen join in the fight.

Some great action scenes, some tedious 19 century moralizing. Very nice to ponder how a 19 century mind fantasized 18th century frontier life. Dialog was very quaint and amusing. Narration was good.

Historia
Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.
