Spooky but sweet
Revisado: 01-08-25
If you're in the mood for something spooky but not terrifying, then this is the book for you. I like a bit of spookyness in my books, but I'm not a fan of overly terrifying ones, so I'm glad The Haunting Between Us turned out to be just what I liked.
This book definitely keeps you on your toes when it comes to the mysterious Crimson House, also known as Hugo's new home. It's haunted for sure, and I have chills just by thinking someone lives there with a not so nice ghost. I would have freaked out way before Hugo did.
Our other MC is Cameron, who lives across the street from Crimson House, and he also has a history with the haunted house. He's also a sweet guy who develops crushes way too easily. Like he falls just a little bit for his new neighbour when he sees him for the first time. It's just simply sweet.
Their story does not start the easiest, but the hauntings in the old house quickly bring them close.
The book is YA, which means we get a healthy dose of teenage angst, high school bullies, and the healing power of school theatre. We also have a wonderful friendship group complete with a paranormal investigator (Abby), a psychic (Chloe), her girlfriend (Maya), a sweet social non-binary friend (Taylor), and the token straight friend (Matty). I absolutely love them as a bunch.
The story definitely focuses on the Crimson House and hauntings that go on within it, but it's nicely rounded out with a bit of teenage romance and friendships that I very much appreciate. Yes, there are some spooky, slightly scary things going on, but I don't feel like the book actively tries to scare me.
The mystery of the house is the key to the whole story, and in my opinion, it wasn't that hard to solve. The book did include quite a few twists, but I saw them coming a mile away. Which is not bad. It just maybe means the author has some improvement when it comes to plot.
I appreciate that the history of the house and its inhabitants is so involved in the mystery. It added a much needed second layer to all that was going on.
As for the romance, it is very ordinary. The attraction between Hugo and Cameron is clear from the beginning, but once they get together, it's way too fast. Their relationship goes from zero to 100 in a matter of days, which is something I generally don't like in romances.
I did love their bond, though. It's nice to see young men being vulnerable and open with each other instead of repressing their problems.
Overall, I think this is a very enjoyable book. It's spooky, it's mysterious but it's also fun.
I listened to the audiobook, and it's great, and I loved the narrator.

Audie Award, Multi-Voiced Performance, 2016. The year is 2575, and two rival mega-corporations are at war over a planet that's little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra - who are barely even talking to each other - are forced to fight their way onto one of the evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout best seller Illuminae continues onboard the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault. Hanna is the station captain's pampered daughter, Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair are struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy's most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.

So good!!!
Revisado: 12-21-24
I think it sais a lot about a book that I needed to stay up waaaay after my bedtime to finish it!
At first, I didn't feel like it's going to be as great as the first book. You know, sequels don't always meet the expectations. But after some stuff goes loose and basically our heros' (Hannah, the staiton captain's daugther and Nik, member of a criminal gang, House of Knives) lifes turn upside down and the whole situation goes south.. Now then, my friends, begins this spectecular story.
Again, we have this spooky, scary feeling all through the book, which keeps you on edge all the time. Some really detailed differences between the main characters make the conversations interesting. Then comes some backstabbing, and maybe three or four major turns in the flow of the events that make you bite your nails and keep you reading at 2 am. at night.
My favourite part was when the real scientific theories ( I can't tell which ones as that would spoil things for you) came up, and it again brought things closer to me! I'm a nerd, so please forgive me that scientific theories excite me!😁 Two-thirds of the book was a bit disappointing for me in connection with the format. It was a bit boring (not like in Illuminae), but the ending was beautifully constructed! I loved it, and it completed the storytelling in a perfect way!
Of course, at the ending my heart skipped like three beats, and I highly suggest you buy Obsidio before finishing Gemina 'cause maaaan.. Major cliffhanger alert!
I was gaping for a minute thanking all the deities out thier for the fact that I've already bought Obsidio!

Slow start but finishes with a bang
Revisado: 12-21-24
OH WOW! Again, the authors blew my mind!
The first part was a very long prologue, and it was nice, but nothing special happened compared to the first two books. But after our heroes got a chance to shine bright and try to save everyone's asses I basically flew right through the rest of the book!
It was exciting, breathtaking, and even unexpected sometimes! All the small touches the authors made brought the story closer. Everyone's personality was uniquely described and loveable!
The format fortuantely changed a bit with the handwritten notes and prevented it from going boring. It was a nice move to provide glimpses into the forming of the Illuminae Group and to get to know who our favourite analyst (Analyst ID 7213-0089-DN) was.
i love the narration so much. The full cast really brings it all together.
All in all, I enjoyed this book and loved the series! Highly suggesting it to everyone!

The perfect paranormal mystery romance
Revisado: 11-25-24
I've been trying to come up with a meaningful review, but I can only say that this book, along with the whole series, is the most perfect paranormal/urban fantasy/murder mystery I've read in a long while. I can only compare it to TJ Klune's Green Creek series, and just because of the wolves.
The Wolf at the Door is an exciting, angsty, suspenseful mystery with wolf shifters, a slightly awkward agent, and his temporary partner who happens to be a wolf shifter himself. The story is engaging and captivating. The characters are far from perfect but very, very lovable and fun. The mystery is definitely mysterious, and we are kept on our toes the whole time. The world building is slow, but it suits the story (throughout the whole series).
Copper might be one of my favourite main characters. He's a complex person with heavy and substantial baggage, a chip on his shoulder, and an urge to prove himself competent and useful. But he's also smart, quick-thinking, and a lot reckless. His interpersonal skills are not the best, and he's attmpts at romance need some work. Yet, I couldn't help but adore him.
Along with Oliver Park, his wolf shifter partner, they make an unlikely but very efficient (well, mostly) pair of investigators. Even though their friendship starts out haltingly because they're the first human-shifter partnership. And also because of Copper's mistrust, the bureau's mistreatment of wolves and their fledgling attraction.
Without spoiling anything, I just want to say that this is a really well-written book and series, and it's definitely on my regular re-read list.
The narrator took a little bit of getting used to, just because he's talking a bit faster than usual. However, I ended up liking him a lot.

An enjoyable small-town story
Revisado: 11-25-24
I did not expect this to turn out how it turned out.. but I liked it.
This was my first read by the Author that was her own book and not a cowrite. And it was sweet. It was a strange mix of romance, small town comedy and suspense.
The main characters, Si and Ev, were both complex and their acts and feelings sometimes did not make sense to me. The fights always ended both of them realising they were unfair and neither of them were to blame which is kind of weird. However the two kinds of grief described made the whole thing pretty emotional.
But if we look at the setting and the small town charm... it was cute and funny as hell! Gossip, speculation and an incredible amount of festivals. The other couples in the story and all the villagers provided a great and extensive backstory.. but I sometimes found it hard to place characters.
My other favourite was Grandpa Hen who was a grumpy, grumpy man... but the fact they were the same with Ev was funny and emotional. I liked his no-nonsense character.
As for the narration, it was pretty awesome. I love both narrators and they always do such a great job.

A shaklow but entertaining story
Revisado: 11-15-24
I can definitely say that I am not the target audience of this book (I'm an adult), but I do think this is a solid contemporary YA read with great representation and cultural aspects.
Rani and Meghna are ex-best friends who reconnect when they find out their boyfriend is the same person and who cheated on them both. They team up to get revenge and beat him in a young scientist exhibition. They want to create an app that can be used to catch cheaters and provide mental health advice.
Unfortunately, Meghna's character is quite annoying. She hates Rani for a reason that is not explained enough to justify the level of hatred coming from Meghna.
Rani is a lovely character who tries to be the voice of reason in many situations to counteract Meghna's fire and stubbornness.
Their reconnection through the revenge plot is the main focus of the book. Their friendship needs healing, and they slowly start to trust each other once again.
The sapphic romance plot is a bit out of the blue at the end, but I did see some very subtle signs we're heading that way, mostly in Rani who's lesbian coded (it's not stated in the book) and who has a thing for Meghna from the beginning even if she doesn't recognize it.
A big part of the story is the Bangladeshi representation. Both Rani and Meghna are very proud of their Bengali origins, and their culture plays a significant role in how they act. The parental expectations, the common discrimination against them because they are dark skinned, and much more. These themes are significant but not overpowering in the book, which is still very much lighthearted.
There are some great side characters in the book, too, who mostly try to be the voice of reason.
One thing that I couldn't really get behind is that two bright and talented young women decide to get revenge on a boy throwing away their great ideas about climate change and their culture. It's almost diminishing to women in STEM when they are portrayed in such a shallow way.
Overall, an entertaining read.
The narration was a bit weird to listen to because one of the narrators was way slower than the other and with the dual POV it was just strange and a bit annyoing.

I came to tiny Majestic, Wyoming, to escape misfortune: the loss of my brother; my parents’ blame for it; the billion-dollar secret that caused it all. I find peace in my horses, in my friends, in quiet nights alone… and sometimes in remembering a scorching-hot one-night-stand from two years ago. But everything changes when Tully Bowman, the man behind that unforgettable encounter, turns up in Majestic bringing me the daughter I’ve inherited (along with her multi-million-dollar trust fund).

Sweet and heartwarming
Revisado: 10-08-24
Billionaire romances are not my first choice when it comes to romance books, but I've been enjoying the Billionair Brotherhood series. Mostly because of the strong friendships.
Inheriting Miss Fortune is Dev's and Tully's story, and it has the single dad trope, which always makes me happy.
It does start with a tragedy, though, as Dev gains custody of his daughter, Lellie, after her mom passes away.
When Tully brings Lellie to Majestic to execute the will that put her in Dev's custody, the events of two years ago stir inside both of them.
The story mostly circles around the custody battle and Dev learning to and coming to terms with being a dad. It was bittersweet to see him open up and come out of his shell with his daughter. On the one hand, it's beautiful and heartwarming stepping up without hesitance to take care of her, even if he only plans to do it temporarily at the beginning. But it's also kind of heartwrenching when he struggles with his past and his guilt that makes him feel that he's not good enough for her.
Tully is hesitant about leaving Lellie with Dev at first as he doesn't know much about the elusive man. He's only point of reference is their hook-up a few years ago, and he obviously can't form opinions based on that. He also comes a long way in the book, setting his priorities straight and learning what he is and what he isn't willing to do for his job as an attorney.
The romance in this one is kinda cosy and revolves around Dev and Tully finding their foot together while caring for the 15-month-old baby. On a ranch. In Wyoming. They slowly gravitate towards each other, rekindling the Flame that once burned between them and learning to trust one another. It's actually really sweet seeing the coparent.
The spice was spicing, but with almost all Lennox books, it was just a tad more than I enjoy (in terms of quantity).
The setting in Majestic is the perfect scene for the story. It brings the small-town atmosphere, the ranch vibes, and all the loving people. Dev is forced to realize that not only are his friends there for him in every situation, but the townspeople of Majestic are also on board with him raising the baby.
All in all, the story was sweet, with a lot of excitement around the custody battle and a sweet, sweet romance. Lellie was a sweet little thing who we could love, and Dec and Tully are a sappy pair of men whose romance is definitely satisfying.

4 stars for this emotional slow burn!
Revisado: 09-02-24
Another MZ book that stole my heart! I don't even have to think if I would enjoy one of her books before picking it up. They are just sooooo good.
4.5 stars for this emotional, sweet, funny and captivating story.
Y'all read the synopsis so I won't go into much detial about this one. And actually every Zapata book needs to be read with as little information about as you can get. Why? Because it's half the fun to discover what's happening while reading hundreds of pages of slow burn romance.
Because.. no surprise here.. it IS a slow burn. The slowest burns. But that's why we love MZ, right?
In All Rhodes Lead Here we get to know Aurora de la Torre's story of starting over in his hometown. It all starts with a teenager's mischief that is hilarious and the meeting of our lovebirds.. okay lovebird might be a little strong and sudden for grumpy, strict and foreboding game warden Tobias Rhodes.
But from than the perfect Zapata moments just flood us throughout the book.
Grumpy man with a stoneface? Check!
A lovely woman getting under his skin? Check!
Life altering self-discovery? Check!
Wonderful side character that warm your heart? Check!
A lovely, friendly small town? Check!
Beautiful views and deep thoughts? Check!
There were just so many perfect little moments that built up this lovely, emotional and a lot of times tear-jerking story that I could barely put this book down.
The characters were awesome just as in every character driven book. And MZ's books are all about characters.
Our heroine, Aurora, is starting over. She is lost after a bad break up and needs to find a place where she can settle and move on with her life. She has a lovely, sunny, happy personality. She's chatty and evereything the Rhodes boys didn't know they needed.
Rhodes reminded me a lot of Aidan from the Wall of Winnipeg and Me. But because I absolutely loved the bad-tempered, quiet man in that book, Rhodes was just as perfect for me. And you know how a golden heart is always behind that cold facade? Just wait for it and see for yourself.
As I mentioned before, the side characters was as lovely as ever. Amos, Clara, Jackie, Yuki and more were just the perfect sweet companions our heroes needed in their journey to a new, sweeter life!
We also had the evil in the face of Kaiden and Mrs. Jones to give us some backround to Ora's past.
This book... this book was just great! I'm not sure any book of hers could top the Wall of.. and Wait for it but it doesn't mean I couldn't adore every other book too.
I had one problem that bothered me a lot... that Rhodes called Ora Buddy. First it's weird to call your possible love interest that. Then it turned out it was for a different reason... and it was not better.
But I can move past that becasue overall, the story was just great!
Read it if you love Zapata! Read it if you love slow burns. READ IT!
