Real people --
Revisado: 04-19-25
Well narrated; Rusty Nelson certainly comes through with the under-sheriff's voice and demeanor. The crimes aren't some far-fetched rabbit out of the hat stuff; but things that could be "real". And the timing is great; I can listen to this during a part of a day instead of trying to remember it through several days. I'm hooked; I'll buy and listen through the entire series if they are as good as the first three have been.

The story line continues to be good... Chris Ciulla continues to be amazing. The politics continue to be sad. And I'll continue to be a fan. Am waiting, breathlessly, for the dramatis personnae to be updated.

Martha Ratliff conceded long ago that she’d likely spend her life alone. She was fine with it, happy with her solo existence, stimulated by her work as a librarian in Maine. But then she met Alan, a charming and sweet-natured salesman whose job took him on the road for half the year. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes, even though he still felt a little bit like a stranger.

I stayed up all night for this one (and made sure the door was locked). The narrators were stupendous; absolutely different voices and nuances for each character. The story was twisty, but not so complicated that I needed to create my own dramatis personae. I've grown out of the blood and guts murder genre, but this was completely worth it. While YMMV, if you start it, finish it. It's worth it.

Understated and very worth the time
Revisado: 12-01-24
Well written, beautifully crafted. Not a "fun" nor "funny" book... a piece of "real" life. This was my story for a Sunday afternoon when all alone. I found it completely worth the 6 hours of time plus those quiet moments in memory. (And I'd like to find someone with whom to discuss it.) YMMV, but the understated narration was absolutely perfect once I got over my thinking it "should be" different.

Some holes, but a really easy listen
Revisado: 11-27-24
I enjoyed the narrator... the tonal drop for "he said" "she said" was new to me and absolutely perfect. I had to re-listen in spots because of the accent, but it was a nice, cozy drawl.
The story seemed to have some holes -- like when did the two youngsters get so cozy? -- but after I realized it wasn't "me", I ignored it and continued on. This will be a good book to listen while I'm drifting off to sleep.
If you wanted to nitpick you could, but I enjoyed the story. YMMV.

Not a cuddly story but not nearly as brutish as it
Revisado: 11-06-24
First off, it's Ray Porter, so of COURSE it's perfectly narrated.
I haven't read (nor heard of) David Freed, but wow, what an interesting take on a retired spy story. Yes, there are murders but not in a gritty, horrendously cruel way. It's a guy getting by in the weird world he (and we) live in, and only from the MC's point of view. I really enjoyed it, and will let friends of both genders know about it.
YMMV, of course. And if you're looking for sex scenes and what-not, you may want to look elsewhere.

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

Revisado: 10-19-24
The author pulled off the HE famously... and the narrator went right along with it. I loved that it made me think and be concerned that it would be either too slick or too sappy, and it went otherwise. Or both? Anyway, I ended this book with a feeling of rightness. YMMV, of course; but I'd love to discuss it with a good friend, and that, again, for me, is an amazing accomplishment on the part of the book..

They solved a murder
Revisado: 10-17-24
What a great, intelligent, mystery. Wonderful characters, dry humor, twists and turns... a bit of a slow start for me, but I ended up listening to the whole thing in a little over one day. I had to pay attention; the reader was fabulous, very much not "over the top" and not vehement voice changes, but the words were enough to figure out who was talking, and I liked that very much. When I listen to the next in the series, I'll have a pen and paper nearby to remind myself who's who. This is not romance, and it is not gritty blood and guts, although it has a bit of both. I was enchanted. You might be, too...

Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Revisado: 10-12-24
Not my usual John Scalzi, but it was a great listen and the length was perfect. I will listen again when traveling. The narration was also perfect for the story. I'd just finished a re-listen of the Dispatcher series, so this was a delightful "palette cleanser".
