Lucado is great for morning commutes
Revisado: 10-27-24
This book turned long, daily commutes to comforting times of hearing the heart of God. The author and reader are a magic combo. Lucado (writer) and Holland (reader) are like peanut butter & jelly, the bun and burger, whip cream and strawberries. The book is a source of gaining wisdom, peace, and strength.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

Historia
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

Revisado: 10-12-23
This is a bittersweet story about resilience and the power of family, even in dysfunction. Not a genius read. It’s better than that. It’s humble, honest, transformative.

Brilliant work of historical fiction. Brilliant audio performance!
Revisado: 12-28-22
This book effectively takes you back in time to the Deep South and redeems the error of “Gone with the Wind”, Polites doesn’t stoke sympathy for the south and its faded glory after the civil war. He instead reveals its resentment, paranoia, and hostility in the wake of Abolition, which led to atrocities against newly-freed slaves. The author does an impressive job embodying southern racism, greed, and naïveté within the characters, while bringing to life the love and resilience that conquers all evil.

A "go to" for writers and writing teachers
Revisado: 05-28-22
After this book, I've went back to revise my novel. Stein unveils the secrets of great writing and Christopher Lane performs the book so well that I forget that I'm listening to a how-to book. Stein's book has become mandatory reading material for my creative writing workshops. I love it! I'm on my second go-round with it, and I recently purchased the hard copy.

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

I need an "L" for my love of Ove!
Revisado: 05-28-22
This is a funny, feel good book with a firm grip on characterization. Ove is a man who hates everything, but you can't help but to love him. J.K. Simmons does an impressive job of narrating in the third person with the strength of a first-person narrative. Good story, great performance, I'm on my second read of it, because it makes me feel good.

Historia
With the epic sweep of Min Jin Lee's Pachinko and Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing and the lyrical beauty of Vaddey Ratner's In the Shadow of the Banyan, The Mountains Sing tells an enveloping, multigenerational tale of the Trần family, set against the backdrop of the Việt Nam War. Trần Diệu Lan, who was born in 1920, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North.

Mai Creates a Melancholy, but Enlightening Song
Revisado: 05-28-22
The author does an effective job illustrating the Vietnamese perspective of the Vietnam war, recounting the war itself, and how Vietnam coped in the aftermath. Well written, seemingly well researched, however the protagonist(s), storyline, and performance fell a little flat -- a bit too clean in delivery.

A Great Ride with Bev Donofrio!
Revisado: 01-29-22
You rarely hear a coming of age memoir with such wit, comedy, and vulnerability. How Bev manages to take her life trials (that another woman might cry about) and keep the whole world laughing is beyond me. I saw her do a live reading and knew I had to get her Audible book. I was not disappointed. LOVED IT!
