The problems in Dirk Cooper's life were ghosts, money and the Mob. The solution was real estate. A wonderful listen!
Revisado: 06-09-23
For something I suspected would just be a simple, light book, this was a remarkable surprise. A well paced and plotted story with some genuinely scary elements as well as the fun and light bits I had been anticipating. Narrator was absolutely exceptional and made the experience all the better. Can’t wait to start the next one!

Historia
The DFZ, the metropolis formerly known as Detroit, is the world’s most magical city with a population of nine million and zero public safety laws. That’s a lot of mages, cybernetically enhanced chrome heads, and mythical beasties who die, get into debt, and otherwise fail to pay their rent. When they can’t pay their bills, their stuff gets sold to the highest bidder. That’s when they call me. I’m a Cleaner: a freelance mage employed by the DFZ to sort through the mountains of magical junk people leave behind. It’s not a pretty job, or a safe one....

Interesting Story Let Down by Protagonist
Revisado: 10-14-21
I very much enjoyed the story, as a whole, and some of the characters presented. However, the protagonist was immature, whiny and the cause of her own problems so, since she wasn't terrible likeable, I found myself not caring if she got out of trouble/danger or not. I was interested in the solution to the story's mystery, though, and enjoyed the concept of the DFZ and how other characters interacted with that environment so I did have aspects of the book that kept me engaged in listening.. The narrator did an acceptable job with the main character, hitting the right juvenile, irritating tones I'd expect from how the character was written, but many other voices didn't hit the mark for me. Overall, it wasn't a terrible listening experience, but I'm undecided about listening to the other titles in the series.

Historia
Just any warlock. Oh no, I'm a warlock for hire. Need magical assistance? I'm your guy. Whatever you need: spells, cures, or potions - I can provide. For a price. My life gets a tad more difficult when one particular customer comes knocking. Enter Ashley Sheridan. She's sexy, mysterious, and in a whole lot of trouble. I should have turned her away, but I just can't resist a good mystery. So I poked my nose where it doesn't belong and landed myself in trouble with a malignant seer. I have to do as he says or people are going to die. I'm not really known for cooperation, so I'll just have to find a way to kill him, before he kills the people I care about.

Fun for a Weekend Listen
Revisado: 01-16-20
I had a lot of fun with this book and, at under six hours, it was the perfect length to while away a Saturday afternoon/evening with a smile on my face. The narrator was great at bringing the characters to life and the story had an energy that kept me motivated to keep listening, wanting to know what happens next. Knowing it's a Book 1 of a series was a perk to starting it as, if I enjoyed the title, there would be more on offer. I'll certainly listen to more by this author and narrator again!

Solid Haunted House Story
Revisado: 01-16-20
This was a well-narrated haunted house story that surprised me in that they can feel a bit cliche and predictable, but this one maintained my interest and threw a good number of solid chills and thrills as the story progressed. For a rainy day where a bit of an old-fashioned scare is desired, this is a good choice!

Glad I Stumbled On This One!
Revisado: 01-16-20
For a fairly short listen, this story entertained me a great deal and the narrator was well chosen for the nature of the book and the characters he had to portray. I found the pace and story line kept me engaged throughout and I was eager to launch into the next books in the series when this one was completed. A worthwhile book for urban fantasy fans!

Historia
Charles Ripley has a good job as an engineer, a pretty wife, and an expensive house in a fashionable San Diego suburb. But it isn't until Ruskin Marsh moves in next door that Ripley realizes how passionless his life really is. Marsh, a connoisseur of the arts, high-powered lawyer, model husband and father, and effortless seducer of women, is so supremely alive that Ripley finds himself irresistibly drawn to him. But after Marsh's arrival, local girls begin to vanish, marriages end violently, and horribly mutilated corpses are found.

A Familiar Concept Done Very Well
Revisado: 01-12-20
The overall concept of the story isn't a new one for modern readers, but it *is* one often attempted with too heavy a hand and without the general eeriness that underlies this book. Eric Higgs did a great job capturing the threads of menace and malevolence that hide under the flashier events and the narrator, Matt Godfrey, gave a performance suitable for the various voices of the characters and the overall tone of their interactions and the book as a whole. It's a solid listen for a free afternoon/evening that leaves you feeling satisfied, even with the books' relatively short length.

A United States senator is murdered on the floor of the Senate by an invisible assassin; a French nobleman in Jerusalem during the First Crusades gives rise to a new order, the Knights Templar; a creature of dark mythology becomes the power behind the Third Reich. Three supposedly unrelated events weaving their way through the corridors of time as if by no reason or rhyme. But what if all these moments were connected through the incredible exploits of one man?

A Story that Grows on You
Revisado: 01-12-20
Overall, I enjoyed this book though I found it a little hard to get into it at first. The writing was detailed, which I appreciate, but the combination of the rather soft narrator voice and somewhat stilted passages, at times, made my attention wander. However, the concept was interesting and the various elements involved (narrator, tone, pace) gelled more cohesively after the somewhat, to me, rocky start. I'd certainly read something by these authors again!

Loads of Fun!
Revisado: 01-11-20
I enjoy an over-the-top British comedy romp and this certainly fits the bill. The characters were engaging and the humor hit the spot with a continued undercurrent of looniness punctuated by some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments. Not quite as as on-target as various Jeeves and Wooster outings, but right along those lines and great for a light listen when you want something fun after a tiring week.

An Highly Enjoyable Title
Revisado: 01-11-20
All Soul's Night is an entertaining set of tales that I genuinely found creepy and fun to listen to with the lights low and a piece of knitting in my hands. They had that old-fashioned ghostly feel that you remember from your younger years listening to scary stories when they thrilled you by getting under your skin and making you check under the bed before you went to sleep.
