Historia
War and Peace is one of the greatest monuments in world literature. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Napoleonic Wars, it examines the relationship between the individual and the relentless march of history. Here are the universal themes of love and hate, ambition and despair, youth and age, expressed with a swirling vitality which makes the book as accessible today as it was when it was first published in 1869.

Compelling tale of many people’s intertwined lives
Revisado: 04-22-25
The narrator does a fantastic job of telling this epic tale of war and domestic affairs in Russia during the Napoleonic wars. It starts off a bit slowly, but the excitement and intrigue builds with character and plot development. Well worth the listen! Can’t wait for part 2!

Historia
There are very few children's stories that have raised as much outrage in grown-up politics as The Water Babies did when it first appeared in 1863. It was written by Charles Kingsley for his own little boy and shortly after he had been made tutor to the Prince of Wales.

Whimsical story and great narrator!
Revisado: 02-27-25
I had read this story as a child, and had very fond memories of it. The parts of the story that I remember were just as beautifully written, as I remember – – the descriptions of Tom and his adventures as a water baby. The narrator has incredible voices for every character and is wonderful to listen to. However, there are very dated and oddly didactic sections of the story that are racist that I have course didn’t remember, so definitely bear that in mind. The last few hours in particular are full of these and I found the story getting tiresome at that point.

Good collection of morbid stories
Revisado: 02-11-25
This collection of stories was nicely assembled and many were quite good, and with very good narration. Some stories were better than others but all were unfamiliar and new to me except Berenice by Poe, so I appreciated that!

Historia
Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous, physical work, and the men take care of the children.

What a story.
Revisado: 12-05-24
This is an incredibly beautiful and tragic story. I had a little trouble at first with the reader, but in retrospect I think she did a wonderful job with the narration, and the story just keeps getting more and more compelling. I encourage you to listen. This is such a beautiful tale.

Good collection - good reader
Revisado: 11-22-24
This was a very good collection of ghost stories – – not too morbid, but just scary enough to get you in the mood for Halloween. The reader overall did quite a good job, especially for this type of short scary story reading. The Stephen Fry ghost story collection is better, but this is a good follow up to that if you enjoyed it.

Steven Fry is an amazing reader, and he did a great job selecting a variety of captivating and well written ghost stories. I read these for Halloween - really got me in the mood. Spooky but not too terrifying and very tasteful.

Beautiful reading of a beautiful story!
Revisado: 06-12-24
I read this story as a child, and decided to reread it as an adult. It is just as beautiful as I remember, and the reader does it great justice, with incredible voices for all the main characters. She does a particularly lovely job with the Yorkshire accent . There is a free option available through Audible, but this one is so much better. Worth the purchase!!

Beautifully read, and a really touching story, which at times has you and the edge of your seat!! Juliet Stevenson is a brilliant narrator of the Manchester accent, which makes it all the more realistic. I highly recommend, and I’m excited to read more work by Elizabeth Gaskell.

Historia
A disturbing tale of a young man's uncanny ability to remain both young and beautiful while descending into a life of heartless debauchery, The Picture of Dorian Gray was considered proof of both Wilde's genius and his perversion. Oscar Wilde's scandalous best seller of 1891 was one of the most damning pieces of evidence used against him in the trial that brought about his downfall.

Tragic story, beautifully read
Revisado: 02-09-23
I’m not going to lie — this is an excellent book, but not an easy read as it’s both sad and disturbing. As a previous reviewer wrote, this is a twisted tale of vanity and poisonous people. Yet it is even more tragic, as the protagonist is also a complex character with some conscience and guilt, and he is fighting against his worst impulses, albeit unsuccessfully. The narrator is fantastic, and perfectly emulates the tone of the various characters, from the petty upper class to the desperate and destitute. I highly recommend this read, but remember that it will leave you sad and thoughtful, and at times horrified at man’s ability to justify his own actions.
