I thought the book did not add much to my knowledge of the crisis and war in Ukraine. It should have included more analysis of various developments leading to the current phase of this long simmering crisis.

Historia
A character-driven history that describes the bizarrely ill-suited alliance between America and Pakistan, written by a uniquely insightful participant: Pakistan's former ambassador to the US. The relationship between America and Pakistan is based on mutual incomprehension, and always has been. Pakistan - to American eyes - has gone from being a stabilizing friend to an essential military ally to a seedbed of terror.

Excellent book on US Pakistan relations
Revisado: 05-19-24
This is an excellent book on US Pakistan relations from the partition of India and the independence of Pakistan to the Cold War and the war on terrorism. India was central to Pakistani thinkers thinking while the Cold War and the war on terror was the priority for the Americans. The military civilian divide in Pakistan is always powerful as well as the personal chemistry between the various stakeholders. An excellent book.

Historia
To understand world politics, you need to understand how states think. Are states rational? Much of international relations theory assumes that they are. But many scholars believe that political leaders rarely act rationally. The issue is crucial for both the study and practice of international politics. John J. Mearsheimer and Sebastian Rosato argue that rational decisions in international politics rest on credible theories about how the world works and emerge from deliberative decision‑making processes.

An excellent work on rational foreign policy making in the international system
Revisado: 05-19-24
I thought this was a good basic argument compressed in this book with historical examples to support the narrative. A good defense on the rationality of foreign policy.

Historia
For over 20 years, a select group of Yale undergraduates has been admitted into the year-long "Grand Strategy" seminar team-taught by John Lewis Gaddis and Paul Kennedy. Its purpose: to provide a grounding in strategic decision-making in the face of crisis to prepare future American leaders for important work. Now, John Lewis Gaddis has transposed the experience of that course into a wonderfully succinct, lucid and inspirational book, a view from the commanding heights of statesmanship across the landscape of world history from the ancient Greeks to Lincoln, and beyond.

A good book on various lessons of history with a good range of comparisons. The chapter on Elizabeth of England and Philip of Spain was especially useful and a good comparison of leadership and temperament of the two monarchs. Yet I did feel that the book was very much American centric (and western centric) in the various examples used to make the arguments.

The IRGC is notable for its involvement in conflicts around the Middle East, particularly in supporting Shi'a groups through military training and finance, as well as backup support on the battlefield. This is not to say the IRGC enters into conflicts for the sake of being involved, but rather, they see these particular situations as serving the interests of Iran and furthering their brand of Shi'ism, a sect of Islam.

Historia
Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members - mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists - The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age.

Excellent Palestinian perspective on their plight
Revisado: 03-16-24
An excellent perspective on the plight of the Palestinians with an emphasis on the colonial nature of the Zionist project. Well narrated and wished there was more emphasis on mistakes committed by the Palestinian leadership including their involvement in Jordan and Lebanon. Unduly harsh on Arab states backing the Palestinians for many decades. Overall an excellent work.
