Tor Thom’s narration ruined this audiobook

This is my second book by Rachel Reid, and I was excited to read more titles by her. But this narrator is a disaster, he is always a disaster and I actively avoid books read by him because of how bad his voices (and accents!) are. I swear, it’s impossible to picture Kip as anything other than the beast from Beauty and the Beast because Tor Thom’s Brooklyn accent is such a cringy mess, and it comes and goes but mostly sounds like a speech impediment.

I loved the depth of this story, the realness of the characters. The writing was beautiful, and narration was well done. Adding this book to my favorites and will listen over and over.

An obvious attempt at repurposing every other character she’s written

This had so much potential because Darius and Miller were such likable characters. But every interaction had to involve opinions from every single Wild or Marian in the room, and all of that input just took forever and disrupted the flow of the book. I found this to be overwhelming and read more like a list of characters from previous books ticked off in rapid succession. I get that people want more from previous characters they’ve read about, but I feel tricked into wasting a credit on what was essentially a check-in with a bunch of fictional characters.

I also think the names in this book caused confusion. Tilly, Tiller and Miller were three prominent characters. Michael Dean called Tilly “Tiller” several times in this audiobook. And there are two Sams.

This book could have been so much better had the focus remained on Darius and Miller rather than on all the existing characters in the Wild/Marian-verse. Feels like I was tricked into wasting a credit on a check-in with people who don’t exist.

Good in theory, execution fell short. Felt forced, contrived. I didn’t really buy it that they were in as deep of love all of the sudden. Their sexual experiments felt so planned out that they didn’t feel organic. I also cannot stand John Solo as a narrator. He turns every character into a 50-something librarian working the reference desk. He cannot sound sexy and always sounds exhausted.

I was beyond impressed with Casey McQuiston’s magical way with words. The descriptions, the love letters, the character development, it was all written by a person with such skill that it is impossible for this story not to come alive in vivid colors. The narrator did a great job of capturing both characters’ attitudes (the subtle nuances of Henry and the outward snark of Alex) as well as changing voices and accents for all of the other characters. But I thought he sounded too old for either character, and his voice isn’t my favorite.

I’ve been enjoying this entire series. Admittedly I’ve read them out of order, but I find Annabeth Albert writes characters with such depth and complexity that I’m pulled into the stories and really rooting for them. I found the chemistry between the characters to be so perfect.

I was intrigued by the idea of this story, two men finding their way in their new lives after losing limbs. The emotions attached to those experiences were real, and in theory this book could have been great. In execution, I found the conversations to be slow and repetitive. The book lacked excitement for me. I also wasn’t into John Solo’s narration.

This was a difficult audiobook to get through. There was a lot of unnecessary pain, and intense life situations where there wouldn’t be a clear solution where everyone would come out unscathed. I wish I hadn’t listened to this. That’s how anxious it made me.

A well-written story, this was refreshing because there are so few tropes in the romance genre, all overused. This was different than anything I’ve read, and I recommend it. Should come with a TW for sexual assault for those who might be triggered. Thought the narrators did a good job except the male narrator’s voice for the female character sounded like Paula Deen, and that made it hard to stay focused on the book.

Stephen Dexter ruined this audiobook

I don’t know why Stephen Dexter records audiobooks as though he’s auditioning for the role of Batman, but it’s hard to believe the deepest voice a man can conjure belongs to a 25-year-old dude. Not only that, but he did so many other voices for sub-characters and they had great voices. Not sure why he opted for dropping it so low. It was distracting, though not as distracting as his voice for Roderick, the other male main character whom Stephen Dexter made sound stereotypically flamboyant. Teddy Hamilton did an amazing job as usual, and he brought Roderick to life with so much depth and emotion. It’s directly at odds with Stephen Dexter’s ridiculous depiction of Roderick, who was over-the-top. Stephen Dexter used the same voice for Roderick that he used for women. I found myself unable to pay attention to the story because the voices were so distracting. And the vast difference between the way Roderick was depicted by the two voice actors made him seem like two different characters. Again, Teddy Hamilton nailed it. Stephen Dexter is so overrated and comes up short.
