Historia
The teenagers get their kicks telling ghost stories in the old graveyard. The parents trust their kids will arrive home safe from school. Everyone knows everyone. Curtains rarely twitch. Front doors are left unlocked. But Diana Brewer isn’t lying safely in her bed where she belongs. Instead she lies in a hayfield, circled by vultures, discovered by a local farmer. How quickly a girl becomes a ghost. How quickly a town of friendly, familiar faces becomes a town of suspects, a place of fear and paranoia.

Poor character development
Revisado: 03-06-25
I picked this book because I am fan of January LaVoy’s narration, which was superb as usual. As far as the book goes…not so much. The lack of character development was, in my opinion, contrived in order to make the ending a shock. Overall it left me kind of meh…

I forgot how much I like Mary Higgins Clark
Revisado: 03-03-25
I used to read MHC and always enjoyed her writing but lately I’ve all about audible books so hadn’t read much. I came across this book because I was researching one of my favorite narrators, January LaVOY and thought that I was in the mood for a purely entertaining listen, I thoroughly enjoyed this, it was a double win with the story and January’s wonderful narration. A bonus was a quote Clark used in the story that will somehow find it’s way into my personal lexicon.
“The heart has its reasons that reason does not know” is a quote by Blaise Pascal, a 17th-century French author. The original French phrase is “Le cœur a ses raisons que la raison ne connaît point”.

Historia
Years ago, the day before Ellie moved from Georgia to California, she and her best friend, Nolan, sat beneath the Spanish moss of an ancient oak tree where they wrote letters to each other, and sealed them in a rusty old metal box. The plan was to return 11 years later and read them. But now, as that date arrives, much has changed. Ellie, bereft of the faith she grew up with, is a single mom living in a tired apartment trying to make ends meet. Sometimes she watches television to catch a glimpse of her old friend - Nolan, now an NBA star, whose terrible personal tragedies fueled his faith and athletic drive in equal measure.

My newest favorite author!
Revisado: 11-04-24
A beautiful story, beautifully written and beautifully told by the narrator. At 72 years old, and still very active I might add, I still sometimes wonder about all the paths not taken. One of the wonderful things about loving books is that there is literally no limit to the number of different lives one can experience at the hands of truly gifted authors and actors. This book is a beautiful example of that wonderful truth. The writing transports you to Europe right before, during and after WW II. No spoilers here except to note that it ends exactly as you might want. I only say that because some people, myself included, might hold back from fully experiencing the painful parts of a story if one is overly empathetic and becomes fully immersed in a well written, well executed story performance. Do not be afraid of fully immersing yourself in this book, it ends beautifully.

Soaring body count
Revisado: 09-19-24
I just finished the first 4 of the Hanna and Alex series. I liked each one less than the previous one. I find I have the 5th one in my library but don’t think I’ll get around to listening to it. Each book gets more violent with cascading numbers of murders. Add this to the number of times the author recounts what happened in the previous books and well, the last of the 4th book was just a string of murders interspersed between retelling of Hanna and Alex’ 3 year history. Also, the number of violent attacks on these two people is mind numbing. They should both be dead by now. I don’t see how they can possibly live through 3 more books.

I almost didn’t get the book because of comments about the narrator. After having listened to it I can’t imagine any other. She was perfect. I loved the story. Not Higgins usual historical novel but a magical, lovely story.

Achingly beautiful story
Revisado: 08-25-24
This is quite frankly the best book I’ve listened to on Audible in the last two years. The story is beautiful and the character development is exquisite. While it has some sad, even tragic moments it is told through the eyes of a woman full of life and joy. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to choose my next book by Kristan Higgins. I have to mention that Xe Sands is one of my favorite narrators.

Where did the author come up with his ideas!?
Revisado: 06-12-24
I understand that these books are a fictionalized story of the Old Testament however I did read a review that said nothing in the series was outright counter to the Bible leaving one to believe that the stories were indeed embellished. I agreed with that after reading the first book about Noah. However, I found the civil suit brought against God by Satan pretty off putting but ok…embellishment, but when Cain was introduced and was..are you ready? a vampire!!! that was too much. I stopped listening and will not be continuing the series.

I’m done
Revisado: 05-25-24
I liked the first two books but this third one finishes me for this series and for this author. I find detailed descriptions of animal cruelty just as offensive as sexually graphic material, maybe even more offensive. I will not be buying anymore of this authors work. I was willing to overlook the implausible storyline that one of the characters pluckily went back to work ten days after being impaled mid body by rusty rebar but had to draw the line at the description of animal cruelty. The narrator was very good, I may look for other authors he has narrated for.
