I enjoyed this very much. The narrator was perfect for the material. I felt connected to all of the main characters and cared what happened to them. I am often critical of the author’s often clumsy endings. Not this time. I’ll very likely listen again.

The side-by-side format, telling the story from the point of view of both main characters, worked extremely well. Seeing the rise of the Third Reich from the perspective of both a German officer and a German Jew opened the doors to the truth of the insidious growth of poisonous so-called nationalism and its catastrophic consequences. The narration was perfect. The narrator is clearly fluent in both English and German and this added to the listening experience. I strongly recommend this book.

As a long-time Alice fan, I was glad to have the opportunity to listen to this story, written and narrated by the man himself. The story is clear, concise, honest, and often hilarious. Between chapters he sings acoustic versions of some of his biggest hits. In the chaos of his live shows, the quality of his voice is easily overlooked (especially when everyone, including me, is singing along). In this Audible version, you can really hear it. I highly recommend this.

This is the most amazingly timely reading I’ve ever encountered. Three entirely dissimilar stories bound together by all taking place during the current lockdown. Well written and well read. Thank you very much.

I’m a bit surprised by the negative reviews of this. I almost didn’t buy the book because so many people made disparaging comments about it and I didn’t want to be disappointed by a Stephen King book. I was not disappointed in the slightest. Several times while listening I had a moment of happiness because it was so great to hear Stephen King’s “voice“ again. The narration was excellent (except he could have skipped the parenthetical descriptions of the accent used by the speaker because he already used that accent when reading it). The characters were well developed as were the relationships between them. The overall motivation of the Institute itself provided fodder for a very interesting ethical dilemma at the end. It left some things for the reader to ponder while providing a satisfying ending. I have been critical of Mr. King’s endings in the past. Not this time.

I looked so forward to listening to this book, especially as it was read by the author. Nothing about “Becoming” disappointed. Hearing about the ways Michelle Obama took the very best of her childhood and allowed this to help her rise above any obstacles was inspiring. Her romance with Barack was delightful to hear, as was the joy and pride of her becoming a mother. As a mother of an adult daughter, I appreciated and respected the way she wove her daughters into her story without over-sharing about their private lives. This is a wonderful story and hearing it in Michelle’s voice took it to a whole new level.

I was already aware of the story on which this book is based. The narrative is raw and detailed and puts you into the mind of a very young victim. There is limited insight into the mind of the kidnapper, but this is probably for the best. It does an excellent job of bringing the thoughts and feelings of the kidnapping victim’s family members to life, too. I highly recommend this book, though it’s not for the faint of heart.

I love mysteries and this one didn’t disappoint. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I did not accurately predict the ending and I appreciated that. Seeing the story from the first person perspective was very compelling as there was the opportunity to weigh the protagonist’s inner thoughts against her actions. This was a human being, flawed and wonderful. I found the narrator to be perfect for this work. She used her voice effectively to differentiate among the characters without sounding artificial. I enjoyed it very much and listened to it twice.

Tolstoy can't say anything in a few words and Anna Karenina is another example of this. There are parts of the story that go on and on and could become tiresome if not for the wonderful narration by Maggie Gyllenhaal. That being said, it's a great story about complex and flawed people for whom you can't help developing affection. I recommend this for anyone who loves a good story that has depth. I also recommend it for lovers of history.
