this story was meh, and I didn't especially love the narrators voice. I mean you know it was fine, but just not one of my favorites. I don't like when narrators have that quiver in their voice. If I could do it over I would skip it.

Historia
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

I figured out very early on, at the wake, that this wasn't their grandmother. I said I was going to be pissed if that was the case, which of course it was, but overall it didn't really ruin the story, but if it was meant to be some big shocker, it failed big time with me. Overall I found it an average listen.

predictable and wordy

I was going to stop listening to this at least halfway through, and I wish that I had. It's a story that could have been told in 10 minutes. Extremely obvious, and at this point in time not at very interesting. Had this book been written shortly after it happened, it would have been a whole different story.
SPOILER AHEAD:
Prior to us "finding out" who was doing this to her, even though as I said, it was more than obvious pretty much immediately, she conveniently left out until after it was revealed that the guy had a whole file folder full of correspondence between him and serial killers that he showed her on one of her visits to him in DC. A big FAT folder as she put it. I mean come on now.... she couldn't figure out that it was him? Absolutely ridiculous.

Beginning was better than the end
Revisado: 02-16-24
The first 1/2 to 2/3 of the book I really enjoyed. I thought I had it figured out, but I was incorrect, however, I actually liked my version much better. The story was dragged out a little too much, and there were more than a few things in there that were plain silly, needless, and/or didn't make sense. There is one specific thing in this story that was really ridiculous, but I'm not even going to get into it because It would just be a huge spoiler and I'm not in the mood anyway. It's definitely not a listen that I would recommend to anybody.

Loved the first half
Revisado: 05-21-22
SPOILERS:
I loved the first half of this book. The author did a good job of character creation and depth (for the most part), to where you were interested and felt like you cared what happened to them. The second half (or at least 25%) of the book was a bit of a snoozefest for me. By the end I was more than ready for it to be over. I was also left wanting to know more about one or two characters that we never got back to. My issue with some books, such as this one, is when they make that "perfect" character. I find anyone like that hard to believe and once that happens, I start rolling my eyes with every perfect choice they make. I'm sure you can figure out who that would be in this book . There were a few negative words spoken about the character, by the character herself (while she was being perfect for saying them at her husband's deathbed, of course). I also found the ending with the relationship of the two women an odd choice. Why even hint at it being any sort of a romantic, though platonic, relationship? I just didn't get that, and it felt odd with what we know of them. It would have been fine for them to just have had plain old companionship. I don't know what purpose hinting at anything else, especially coming from left field, accomplished. I wish we would have had seen more details of Prentice and Caleb's stories. We kind of got the bare minimum with them in the second half. I really wanted to hear more about August too (basically about him having a hellish life, of course).
I feel like the narrator's take on George was a bit too soft spoken, especially in the scenes where he is supposed to be very angry, pounding down his fist, etc. I just feel like he was a MUCH more ornery then the narrator portrayed. It made me wonder if that is the way that the author intended for the character to come across. Like do they give notes or guidance to the narrator like with a movie director, or do the narrators just read the characters however they want? I need to know. Had I read this book, as opposed to listened to it, George would have been a very different man. Anyway, aside from that personal opinion, I think the narrator did a very, very good job.

One of my all time favorite audibles
Revisado: 11-30-21
I loved everything about this book. I loved the story, I adored (or hated, accordingly) the characters and I could listen to this narrator all day long.
This story was so good that I would love to see it made into a major motion picture. Just watching the 2 "C" 's struggling to carry him (or drop him) across a desolate planet, absolute horror possible at any and every given moment would have me a nervous wreck the whole time, as it did in the book. Of course they could, if they felt necessary, add in an extra scene for cinematic purposes, but I think it's perfect as is. This book makes you really think about a lot of things. I had my fingers crossed when I finished it that maybe I'd find a part 2 out there, but no such luck. Due to it's age, I assume it won't happen. Just as well though, because as I said, to me, it is perfect (including the ending, which is so rare), and a sequel could ruin that.
Well done well done well done!!!

Historia
Daniel Martin has never forgotten his childhood encounters with Frank Watkins, the man who built his family a summer home out of cardboard and plywood. Frank's gaze was oddly confusing, as if he was attempting to discern the proper way to behave because he didn't know how to respond in a human manner. Since Frank obviously wasn't an alien, young Daniel thought maybe the man was crazy. In the end, Daniel would learn the terrifying truth about Frank Watkins. And as an adult, Daniel is about to discover there are more of them out there.

Is he a one trick pony?
Revisado: 09-06-21
I am a huge fan of the super natural, and this is the third Bentley Little book that I've listened to, the other two being The Haunted and The Influence. All of his books start out so good. I really enjoy the writing style and the characters, but with all three, that soon comes to an end, because in every single one, the shift changes to these ridiculous monsters and ghosts, or whatever they are (even the characters don't know!) and the truth of the matter is that they are just plain silly. Also, the rules of how these "other worlds" work. By the end, it's always all over the place. He is definitely no Stephen King, as none are even scary, and it is beyond repetitive in each book. It's like WE GET IT! The worst part of it all, is that the books all end up being almost identical to each other. The creatures are always so similar, some being almost exactly the same. Also, I could do without his sex scenes. I don't know who his target audience is, but all I can think when I get to those scenes is that he must have had a woman do something terrible to him in his life. They are so degrading to women (this book not bad like the other two, but still not anything that makes it sound good, like it's something that you would want).
I had to force myself to get through this book, again, because I've already "been there, done that", and I never wanted to do it again (but there I was). I am done giving him any more chances because I don't have another second to waste on these same, ridiculous monsters and dream like states, and losing time, etc., and at this point I'm pretty sure this is all he does. I can honestly say that nothing about any of these books stood out from the other two, and in conclusion, if you've listened to one, you've listened to them all.

Yet another typical, lame story on audible.
Revisado: 08-11-21
I am so tired of these same old stories. Prior to listening to this I listened to Bubblehead Road which I enjoyed, so I decided to listen to another short story by the same author. I have had one dud after another on audible lately, with almost all of the books and short stories being similar in style and lame, lazy imagination as this one. I know that this is harsh, and this review is not only for this story, but all of them likes it. I find it absolutely maddening that so many authors are continually putting out stories like this. They are clogging up the landscape so that it's hard to weed through them to get to something decent. I don't know why they bother. Is it that they feel the need to just put SOMETHING out so "this will do"? I honestly can't imagine that any author who puts out one of these same, old, predictable stories would feel that this is even close to their best work, and if you don't feel that way about your work, you probably shouldn't release it. I am soooooo tired of wasting my time. If the next thing I choose ends up being like this I will absolutely SCREAM!
It really doesn't matter if you listen to this story or another of the thousands like it. I wish I had not.
