3.5 stars rounded up - this grew on me!

Second chance, exorcist and demon end up magic-less and under a truth oath resting and forced together at a sanctuary for a month.

Insert cozy vibes, domestic bliss, a kitten, and honesty.

Awww! This was really sweet. Fake dating and living together to help each other out. Slowish burn chemistry, family that loves each other very deeply. Astronaut and space puns.

Loved the narration, this was a good mix of romance, gradual buildup of strangers to fake dating to actual friendship to feelings to love.

Slightly historical slightly paranormal setting with a wolf and fox shifter! Insta attraction and pretty quick getting together.

Plot shenanigans from a meddling abusive uncle. Past tr4nsphobia and abuse from bio family. Found family, garden vibes, disability (seizures), arson.

I found the plot to be a bit more engaging than the romance or either MC, they were just kind of there.

Also, some pacing issues and technical issues with the audio which got distracting. (Background noise, narrator breathing, awk dead space.)

Simon Goldhill had big shoes to fill trying to keep up with Hamish McKinlay's past narration of books 1-3 in this series, but did a great job!

This romance, fell a bit flat for me in comparison to Murdo & David, and the amount of angst and lack of communication outweighed any groveling or realizations. Iain's an idiot, but not in an endearing way.

Things I enjoyed:
- James is a nerdy scientist who loves talking about bugs and nature and he would go on tangents in a very endearing way
- The flashback scenes sprinkled throughout the story helped paint a better picture of their childhoods, relationship growing up together, and what events happened that causes such tension during present time.
-Narration of new-to-me narrator

Things that didn't work for me:
- Iain's small amount of groveling and 'i've changed! i love you' moment was lackluster in comparison of 90% of the plotline being James pining, waiting for crumbs, hoping wishing dreaming to be treated with respect and putting up with an emotionally constipated older boy from childhood with intense daddy issues. James' deserves so much better!
- The boathouse flashback scene of James watching Iain have s3x with some other guy and have his s3xual awakening happen. I get it was there for the self discovery and adding to his mega crush on Iain, but voyeurism when the other people don't know/don't consent to being watched just isn't my thing.
- Internalized h0mophobic MC x free and open with his s3xuality MC's make such an anxiety ridden dynamic. One always stressing about being seen or getting caught, the other just enjoying existing and maybe being a little to open about it in a repressed world.
- Miscommunication trope when it could literally be solved with one big kid conversation. This whole plot just needed the two to communicate their feelings, and all would have been well.

I am obsessed! This was a great fantasy romance. There's warlocks, a search for a dragon's egg, the kid, a magical store, nickelback. What more could you want?

I am so glad I held out reading this until the audiobook was released.

Excellent narration! No notes. I loved every second of this!

This is what I beg for fantasy genre reads to bring! I want the plot and the romance. And this has both!

I liked how this really came down to politics/royalty shenanigans from each country. I grew to love everyone in Ghizol, I was vibing in the flowers, I was along for the ride. The romance was both emotional intimate and the s3x scenes were so hot! We love balance! Bratty prince, flower puns, look at you moments. I loved it!

Check out CWs; there's a very sh1tty king and some murder and whatnot.

More nerdy DnD related romance! MX, some pining, some emo hair flipping of "I'm not worthy of you" vibes. Both MCs work at the board game cafe, one is also an artist (but doesn't like to show his work) with lots of inner angst and is a bit of a grump/stays to himself. The other MC is finishing up their college degree and dealing with grief. Like book 1, this book deals with parents that are addicts, CW for that. One of the MC's siblings also d*ed from an 0verdose. There's also discussion on consent when drinking, which I appreciated.

There were some issues with the audio either skipping or repeating the same sentence a couple times, which sounds like a production issue. Brennan Rossi is a new to me narrator, and it was fine. Some of the women voices were meh, but outside of the repeats, this was ok.

Not my favorite in the series, but still an emotionally angsty read. Also am always here for my nonbinary leads, wooo. This has more "this was a book that I read" energy more than anything.

Surprisingly cute and nerdy wlw romance! One MC owns a board game cafe, loves DnD, and has a very sweet found family of other nerds. The other MC recently moved to the city, rents a room from the other MC, plays roller derby, and is getting out of a crappy relationship.

This had roommates, strangers to friends to lovers, found family, board games, and some sweetness, some strap on shenanigans. Also, Amy Kennedy is a new to me narrator that I enjoyed.

I'm just riding out my 2024 slump, and this was readable (listenable?) for me, which I'm calling a win.

I'm continuing on with my epistolary rabbit hole I've gone down! Fantasy romance, trans & cis men, pregnancy and lots of kiddo content in here. (No on page birth though.)

The pacing in this threw me off a bit. The first 50% is the MCs relationship development/f*cking/dating casually, then the next 40% they're separated and sending letters back and forth, then the last 10% is a very abrupt ending that was too rushed for me. This was a rare situation where I didn't care for the letter elements either, especially since each lead was keeping vital information from the other. Usually the epistolary elements give some deep intimacy elements, but this was just the letter equivalent of s*xting and withholding important discussions (for example, being pregnant and getting injured.)

I do love Derr's world building, and love that there's this "shrug, whatever gender you want to be is cool" element to the society. Each person chooses who they want to be, and it's not dependent on genitals. Love that! I was missing a bit on the romance side, and the plot wasn't the most interesting of the series, but this audio kept my attention which I'll count as a win!
