Historia
Known for her childhood role as Laura Ingalls Wilder on the classic NBC show Little House on the Prairie, Melissa Gilbert has spent nearly her entire life in Hollywood. From Dancing with the Stars to a turn in politics, she is always on the lookout for her next project. She just had no idea that her latest one would be completely life changing. When her husband introduces her to the wilds of rural Michigan, Melissa begins to fall back in love with nature. And when work takes them to New York, they find a rustic cottage in the Catskill Mountains to call home.

Delightfully written
Revisado: 10-04-24
Melissa Gilbert has written a wonderfully entertaining and delightful story about her transition to country living. The only thing that spoiled it was her political commentary. She is certainly entitled to her opinions—this is still a free country to some extent—but I wonder if she still feels as strongly 4 years later that the government officials she gushed over were as wonderful as she had hoped.

Delightful story!
Revisado: 06-27-24
Marion Crawford was so blessed to take on such an interesting position at a young age. Her accounts of the royal family offer up a beautiful picture of an idyllic childhood (for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and Princess Margaret) within a family filled with love.
It’s so sad that the royal family ostracized Crawford after the release of this book, for I think it portrays the entire family in a very positive and “real” way.

Historia
Coexisting but conflicting needs create self-sabotaging behaviors. This is why we resist efforts to change, often until they feel completely futile. But by extracting crucial insight from our most damaging habits, building emotional intelligence by better understanding our brains and bodies, releasing past experiences at a cellular level, and learning to act as our highest potential future selves, we can step out of our own way and into our potential.

Historia
Renowned biographer Andrew Morton takes an in-depth look at Britain’s longest reigning monarch, exploring the influence Queen Elizabeth has had on both Britain and the rest of the world for much of the last century. From leading a nation struggling to restore itself after the devastation of the second World War to navigating the divisive political landscape of the present day, Queen Elizabeth has been a reluctant but resolute queen. This is the story of a woman of unflagging self-discipline who will long be remembered as mother and grandmother to Great Britain.

Historia
Brooke Shields never had what anyone would consider an ordinary life. She was raised by her Newark-tough single mom, Teri, a woman who loved the world of show business and was often a media sensation all by herself. Brooke's iconic modeling career began by chance when she was only 11 months old, and Teri's skills as both Brooke's mother and her manager were formidable. But in private she was troubled and drank heavily.

The good, the bad, and the ugly
Revisado: 02-13-24
I almost returned the book when I first started listening because it seemed like the book was going to be more about Brooke Shields’ mother, but I’m glad I continued to listen.
Shields’ codependent relationship with her mother reminds me of my relationship with my mother (although my mother isn’t an addict nor does she have a drinking problem).
What I liked the most about the book is what appears to be Shields’ honest overall assessment of her mother … the good, the bad, and the ugly.
She gives her mother credit for her strengths, sheds light on her weaknesses, and doesn’t gloss over the hideous, selfish behavior.
At times, Shields comes across as somewhat self-centered; but I think that has more to do with the life she led for the first few decades of her life.
She certainly has had her fair share of trials, and she has turned her life into something she can be proud of.

A cord of 3 strands is not easily broken ...
Revisado: 12-15-23
I was a Beth Moore groupie for years and have many fond memories of sisters in Christ getting together for road trips throughout the Midwest to attend her Living Proof Live events.
She fell from favor a few years back when she made some public statements in the political realm. For those who know her history, the statements she made were (are) understandable, but they dimmed her halo in my eyes.
Nonetheless, I highly recommend this book. It provides even more detail than she alluded to at her events and gives us a deeper look at her husband, blessing that he is.
How she was able to sustain the ministry she had with all the turmoil going on in her life is a testimony to our great God.
Listen to the audiobook. It’s the best way to experience it!🤗

Historia
Hard times come for all in life, with no real explanation. When we walk through suffering, it has the potential to devastate and destroy, or to be the gateway to gratitude and joy. Elisabeth Elliot was no stranger to suffering. Her first husband, Jim, was murdered by the Waoroni people in Ecuador moments after he arrived in hopes of sharing the gospel. Her second husband was lost to cancer. Yet, it was in her deepest suffering that she learned the deepest lessons about God.

Historia
When Condé Nast offered Ruth Reichl the top position at America’s oldest epicurean magazine, she declined. She was a writer, not a manager, and had no inclination to be anyone’s boss. Yet Reichl had been reading Gourmet since she was eight; it had inspired her career. How could she say no? This is the story of a former Berkeley hippie entering the corporate world and worrying about losing her soul. It is the story of the moment restaurants became an important part of popular culture, a time when the rise of the farm-to-table movement changed, forever, the way we eat.

I am embarrassed to say I had never heard of Ruth Reichl. What moved me to buy the book was her career as a food critic and editor.

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Filled with nuggets of gold
Revisado: 09-13-23
I had heard of this book but, as someone who isn’t overly fond of the F-word, decided to pass on reading it. But it kept popping up as a highly recommended book…
When life events got me to a point where the title actually made sense, I decided to give the book a listen.
I was hooked within the first 5 minutes. (The next half hour had me questioning my choice—as the F-word exploded in my ear way too many times to count—but by Chapter 2, the vocabulary settled down and the wisdom began shining through.)
If you can train your brain to block out all of the F-words, I highly recommend this book—especially if you are on LinkedIn and question the world’s definition of success.

Historia
Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times.

Wintering is but a season, not a destination
Revisado: 11-27-22
Rebecca Lee’s narration adds to the beauty of this book.
Like all created things, wintering is simply a part of the cycle of life. Rather than fighting it or getting buried by it, Katherine May teaches us how to burrow down in it for a time of soul restoration.
Spring will come again.
