The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1 begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

but be warned that this is a completely comprehensive document. Not a detail left out… Every battle described in amazing detail with all of the personalities and foibles of the players. An amazing portrait of the time, but a definite commitment to listen to.

Historia
Henry Townsend, a black farmer, bootmaker, and former slave, has a fondness for Paradise Lost and an unusual mentor, William Robbins, perhaps the most powerful white man in antebellum Virginia's Manchester County. Under Robbins's tutelage, Henry becomes proprietor of his own plantation, as well as of his own slaves. When he dies, his widow Caldonia succumbs to profound grief, and things begin to fall apart.

Great atmosphere… But challenging to follow.
Revisado: 11-30-24
Please read this book for your own education! But I’ll be the first to admit I had trouble following the story because it jumps back-and-forth decades and generations without much warning, and has hundreds of characters which are therefore difficult to keep straight in your mind. I think the way to approach this book is to appreciate it for its exploration of the overall atmosphere of race relations in the south and as an exploration of the personal dynamics that can arise in the context of such bizarre and contradictory institutions as black slavery, and a black slave owning class. Fantastic performance by the reader.

Mr. Elizondo is not allowed to tell the whole truth, but what he does tell…
Revisado: 09-27-24
What he does tell is completely consistent with the findings of hundreds of dedicated UFO researchers for the last 80 years. A clever reader will read between the lines in a few places, and be well rewarded. it is astonishing and inspiring that the work of himself in a few others could result in so much disclosure permitted by powers within the establishment, and so much more to come based on the interest that has been carefully built within the US Congress. For more detail about many of the older cases mentioned, and many others, I recommend the three part series: UFOs and the national security state by Richard Dolan, which focuses primarily on UFO encounters with military players.

The description mentioning interleaved stories is perfectly accurate. Stories touch in and out of each other’s plot lines in the most unpredictable ways.
Absolutely flawless performance by the narrator which is truly rare.

Historia
Back in 1985, Frank Mackey was a nineteen-year-old kid with a dream of escaping his family's cramped flat on Faithful Place and running away to London with his girl, Rosie Daly. But on the night they were supposed to leave, Rosie didn't show. Frank took it for granted that she'd dumped him-probably because of his alcoholic father, nutcase mother, and generally dysfunctional family. He never went home again. Neither did Rosie. Then, twenty-two years later, Rosie's suitcase shows up.

Courageous decision to round out Frank’s backstory
Revisado: 12-06-23
The author took a lot of risks in revisiting Frank’s character which had been slightly one dimensional in the previous books, and added enormous color and depth as a result. A bit of a roller coaster as she keeps you wondering where it’s headed. Well worth it in the end.

Historia
Seventeen years ago, King Odysseus sailed to war with Troy, taking with him every man of fighting age from the island of Ithaca. None of them has returned, and the women of Ithaca have been left behind to run the kingdom. Penelope was barely into womanhood when she wed Odysseus. While he lived, her position was secure. But now, years on, speculation is mounting that her husband is dead, and suitors are beginning to knock at her door. No one man is strong enough to claim Odysseus' empty throne—not yet.

In this utterly immersive volume, Mike Wallace captures the swings of prosperity and downturn, from the 1898 skyscraper-driven boom to the Bankers' Panic of 1907, the labor upheaval, and violent repression during and after the First World War. Here is New York on a whole new scale, moving from national to global prominence - an urban dynamo driven by restless ambition, boundless energy, immigrant dreams, and Wall Street greed.

wow! Volume two is even better than volume one.
Revisado: 06-01-23
The effort put into the research and production of this book and audiobook is truly mind boggling. The story of New York is really the story of the birth of the United States. Anyone wishing to understand how we got where we are, warts and all, needs to read/hear this history. can’t wait for volume three.
Excellent performance. Relatively few errors in pronunciation and emphasis, though not 100% perfect.

Richard Dolan's UFOs and the National Security State (Volume 1) has become a classic work of UFO history, a must for all students of this often confusing subject - or simply for those who want a deeper understanding of a key part of 20th-century history. This is the first volume of a two-part detailed chronological narrative of the national security dimensions of the UFO phenomenon from 1941 to the present.

Poor Narration
- De Judy en 04-16-21
this is absolutely the definitive book on the subject
Revisado: 05-16-23
Years of my own research have led me to conclude that Richard Dolan is the definitive researcher in the UFO field, because of his historian perspective. And this book is clearly his Magnum Opus. Anyone interested in this subject must read this book first. This is a “red pill” sort of book, because it will leave no doubt in the reader’s mind that the US military and secret services, i.e. the components of the national security state, have been systematically lying on this subject for more than 70 years and continue to do so, with lies of both commission and omission.
Unfortunately, the narrator was unfamiliar with the subject matter, unfamiliar with the names and acronyms, unfamiliar with common English idioms and conventions of pronunciation, and even unfamiliar with hundreds of ordinary English vocabulary words. The rate of wrong pronunciation and other narration errors, such as errors in emphasis, exceeded one per page, making it somewhat distracting. Don’t give up! The content of the book is worth ignoring this shortcoming.

Glad I finally caught up on an important work.
Revisado: 03-02-23
I was impressed with the level of gritty realism to be found in a book written in 1947. It shies away from very few topics that would’ve been relevant to the life of a World War II soldier. kind of surprised I don’t recall seeing it on a list of banned books.
The performance is excellent, well paced with excellent characterizations, and very few errors.

In this hilarious history, David Hunt reveals the truth of Australia's past, from megafauna to Macquarie - the cock-ups and curiosities, the forgotten eccentrics and Eureka moments that have made us who we are. Girt introduces forgotten heroes like Mary McLoghlin, transported for the crime of "felony of sock", and Trim the cat, who beat a French monkey to become the first animal to circumnavigate Australia.
