Historia
Over one million people have read or listened to and loved Wonder. Now listeners will have a chance to hear from the one of the book's most controversial characters - Julian. From the very first day Auggie and Julian met in Wonder, it was clear they were never going to be friends, with Julian treating Auggie like he had the plague. And while Wonder told Auggie's story through six different viewpoints, Julian's perspective was never shared. Fans could only guess what he was thinking. Until now.

"... tall in the garden of the Lord."
Revisado: 02-01-24
This is a beautifully told story of redemption, forgiveness, kindness, love, and the amazing, freeing gift of remorse, the essential first part of what we who are Christians call repentance. It's not a Christian book - the quoted line is from a 70 year old grave marker - but the virtues Jesus commended are commended here, and for those of us who believe there can't be any truly happy ending without "the Lord", the grave marker line is a precious crumb: it indicates that the people whose ongoing, courageous love to Julian's grandmother, saving her life and making his possible, were not just believers, but believers indeed. This is a work of fiction, but the author poured a lot of truth into this book.

Historia
Winner of the 1982 National Book Award for Biography, Mornings on Horseback is the brilliant biography of the young Theodore Roosevelt. Hailed as a masterpiece by Newsday, it is the story of a remarkable little boy -- seriously handicapped by recurrent and nearly fatal attacks of asthma -- and his struggle to manhood.

Edith Carrow summarily dismissed
Revisado: 07-12-23
I haven't finished it yet, but I don't understand why McCullough is taking so long to get to Edith. I believe from other accounts that she was far more a part of Teddy's childhood than McCullough seems to want us to know. What's going on here? Was he prejudiced against her for some reason? I wish he were alive so I could take issue with him over this.

The Sound Effects almost Lost me
Revisado: 11-05-22
I applaud Walker-Brown's compassion and research, but the story is sad in its own right; no creepy, doleful music needed! Please! It wasn't just in the background; there were several pauses when it was JUST the music. I have no idea how I stayed with it. And since the description did give a heads-up on the content, perhaps it's not fair to mention this, but I found the title misleading. There are many wonderful and fascinating things to know and learn about the human brain, but this book isn't about them: it is about a horrible, preventable enemy of the beautiful brain.

Missing The Blessings and the Curses
Revisado: 09-02-22
Deuteronomy 28 is not between chapters twenty seven and twenty nine. I haven't listened to all 74 hours of this work yet, so I may run across it as randomly as I missed it, but it appears to be missing. To real Bible scholars, a different chapter of Deuteronomy might be considered more theologically indispensable, but to the average Bible-reading Christian Deuteronomy 28 is huge; skipping it would be something like leaving chapter 2 out of Luke or 23 out of the Psalms. I'm wondering, in fact, if the narrators were giving it special attention, i.e. with music or something, and inadvertently lost the very chapter they were trying to embellish. The good news is, almost everyone now knows that any given chapter can be found and listened to on any number of Bible apps; the bad news is, Audible (generally) keeps your place and lets you back up 30 seconds at a time. And while one's app may allow for notes and highlighting, they will obviously not be with the notes and clips from the rest of this important listen.
By the way, if y'all happen to fix that, can you let us know?

With poignant insight and humor, Frank Vertosick, Jr., MD, describes some of the greatest challenges of his career, including a six-week-old infant with a tumor in her brain, a young man struck down in his prime by paraplegia, and a minister with a .22-caliber bullet lodged in his skull. Told through intimate portraits of Vertosick's patients and unsparing-yet-fascinatingly detailed descriptions of surgical procedures, When the Air Hits Your Brain illuminates both the mysteries of the mind and the realities of the operating room.

His language and presentation are just too coarse for me. If I'm to learn anything about brain surgery it will be from others; I don't plan to finish this.

Historia
Led by incredible faith, Wilkerson left his country pulpit in 1958 for the streets of New York City, where a murder trial of seven teenaged boys churned society's antipathy toward them. Even Wilkerson was bewildered by his sense of compassion, but in spite of doubt, he followed the Spirit's prompting to help the boys. This is the amazing story of his journey, and of the mighty power of God to accomplish the impossible.

Historia
Most children go through a dinosaur phase. Learning all the tongue-twisting names, picking favourites based on ferocity, armour, or sheer size. For many kids this love of ‘terrible lizards’ fizzles out at some point between starting and leaving primary school. All those fancy names slowly forgotten, no longer any need for a favourite. For all those child dino fanatics who didn’t grow up to become paleontologists, dinosaurs seem like something out of mythology. They are dragons, pictures in books, abstract, other, extinct.

Title is Misleading
Revisado: 02-15-22
The title suggests an overview - a two hour class for adults who haven't been in a classroom for decades - covering the basic types of dinosaurs, when they lived and in what environment. Instead the above knowledge is assumed and several different specifics are discussed. It is interesting but disappointing in that respect.
