Historia
Javier Perez is a hustler from a family of hustlers. He learns from an early age how to play the game to his own advantage, how his background—murdered drug dealer dad, single cash-strapped mom, best friend serving time for gang activity—can be a key to doors he didn’t even know existed. This kind of story, molded in the right way, is just what college admissions committees are looking for, and a full academic scholarship to a prestigious university brings Javi one step closer to his dream of becoming a famous writer.

Truthfully, nothing crazy happens
Revisado: 12-23-24
I normally don't enjoy listening to books that are just a constant stream of thoughts and little actions, but the narrator has a very calm and soothing voice. he didn't change his tone much when switching characters but you could still tell when was who. book did very well with its critique of "online warriors" and unchecked social justice actions/behaviors. solid read

Historia
After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. They don’t know what I’m capable of....

MAJOR SPOILERS
i was with the story right up until the author decided to make milly a sadistic killer. she previously explained away that all of her previous bouts of violence were justified and out of nowhere she slowly kills Andrew for what purpose? she didn't extort him. she didn't suffer as much as Nina did.. what was the point? she could've left the house at any time. I didn't like either how Nina made excuses for Milly as if she were some poor helpless girl who just couldn't help but murder Andrew. as if she had no control. the damn girl knew what she was doing and at no point did she stop. I wasn't impressed with how the story evolves into Milly becoming some hero and will start helping other women do the same? frustrating listen. I genuinely enjoyed part 2. loved nina

insanity and delusion
Revisado: 10-07-24
nothing but complaining and delusional thinking from the wife for the entirety of this novel. I thought there would be an actual plot to this book but there is none. it is simply a peek into the mind of a overly emotional woman. if you're looking for a plot or some event that changes the characters this isn't it. nothing happens.
the ending is surprising and it's what made me decide to put this at 3 stars but I've read/listened to better.

not the author's best work
Revisado: 10-02-24
the story line definitely dragged in the middle. there is one voice actress who plays the daughter who needs some serious lessons. listening to her robotic enunciation of every word and chapter was not enjoyable at all.

When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong.

I read his previous work, The Chain and I found this one to be the better of the two. Really fast pacing and had a lot of twists and surprises. the narrator did amazing with the different accents and tones! 10 out of 10!

that ending made the book
Revisado: 02-29-24
somewhat of small spoilers here
the little girl quite frankly freaked me out. her superior intelligence and understanding reminded me of the psycho kids from the movies. really strong character plot lines and I especially enjoyed Adam's. the different povs from the various chapters are not hard to follow through because the author did a great job in creating seperate voices that were distinct. the narrator on the other hand was awful. hardly any emotion in her reading and she made zero effort to change her voice to match the characters. I felt like it was a lack of professionalism on her part, but the book was a solid 8/10

not his best work
Revisado: 02-04-24
it's a detective story so as usual I found not an ounce of character development. the premise is good and the narrator does well. I listened to another novel of his "Razorblade Tears". it was a thousand times better than this one. i read a couple of reviews that described this book as coming across as preachy... that's also true. I think authors overkill a subject they are passionate about with over explaining and too much description that can go on and on and on; especially, in this book I felt like the author was trying to hand-hold me through the concept of racism in the south. the characters didn't really jump off the page for me either. overall it wasn't bad but he's done way better elsewhere.
