Historia
A plucky farm boy will find more than he's bargained for on his quest to awaken the sleeping princess in her cursed tower. First there's the Dark Lord, who wishes for the boy's untimely death...and also very fine cheese. Then there's a bard without a song in her heart but with a very adorable and fuzzy tail, an assassin who fears not the night but is terrified of chickens, and a mighty fighter more frightened of her sword than of her chain-mail bikini. This journey will lead to sinister umlauts, a trash-talking goat, and the Dread Necromancer Steve....

Tries WAY to hard
Revisado: 10-25-18
I love puns and satire as much as the next guy, and much more than my wife. This book sadly just tried way to hard to be funny. Everything felt forced and the plot was weak at best. The writer(s) seemed to think making a Xanth-like novel was easy. It obviously isn't. Their obsession with describing the food fell flat while the rest of the world building was very cliche. The saving grace was Luke Daniels and his always enjoyable narrating style. Good inflection and character differentiation. I suggest you look at Scott Myers Magic 2.0 series for a better example of what I think the authors were aiming for.

Lands die. The living light fades. An ancient darkness awakens. The Living Light that sustains Arlethia is dwindling. An unknown, vicious enemy approaches in stealth from beyond the northern glaciers, a wasteland of ice that spans hundreds of miles. A clandestine brotherhood of assassins, held in check by the Light for millennia, seeks to break their maledictive shackles and unleash their bloodlust upon the world.

Great story, but...
Revisado: 09-14-15
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Found the story itself to be interesting. good world building and a story, though not entirely original, fresh enough to keep me listening despite the other shortcomings. The narration is sleep inducing and the writing is stiff. I suppose the dialogue is suppose to denote some nobility or something, but it comes across as unnatural and stilted. Descriptions are not drawn, but rather splattered on the page. The author spends time explaining things rather that aren't necessary. For example, towards the end of the book he evidently thinks the reader hasn't figured out why 'wood dwellers' don't ride horses so he breaks the battle rhythm to tell us again. While other details are lacking, such as the various races can tell each other apart by looks, but we have little clue about the distinctions. Still, enjoying the ride overall, though I would probably suggest the book to friends to READ, not LISTEN.
How could the performance have been better?
Surely Michael Kramer has fans. For my tastes however, I find he can drive the life out of any passage. Only subtle distinctions between character voices, a bit monotone in general and SLOW. Had to bump up the playback speed to keep from banging my head on the steering wheel. At least now I know why my reading friends rave about Brandon Sanderson while I was luke warm at best. A higher energy narrator would suit me better.
Did Circle of Reign inspire you to do anything?
Be nicer to trees. Well maybe not, since if I continue the series I will be buying the book, not a digital audio version.
Any additional comments?
I am not familiar with the author and see on Audible he only has short stories set in this world in addition to this title. I hope he does continue to write on this world. The story was solid and I think the flow of the narrative will improve with, like all things, practice and work.

Historia
Dark fantasy goes hardboiled in Book II of the hard-hitting Grimnoir Chronicles by the New York Times best-selling creator of Monster Hunter International. The Grimnoir Society’s mission is to protect people with magic, and they’ve done so - successfully and in secret - since the mysterious arrival of the Power in the 1850s, but when a magical assassin makes an attempt on the life of President Franklin Roosevelt, the crime is pinned on the Grimnoir.

Unusual part II of III
Revisado: 10-22-13
Would you consider the audio edition of Spellbound to be better than the print version?
Probably. Excellent narration giving more life to the text through accent and emphasis
What did you like best about this story?
Having the protagonist in peril with no easily discernible way out and having to just ride along
Which character – as performed by Bronson Pinchot – was your favorite?
All worked for me. Sullivan is probably the best with his drawl and pondering speech pattern. Dan 'the mouth' was the one that most nearly annoyed me.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
It would have been tempting had I the opportunity. The story rolls and builds consistently.
Any additional comments?
Unlike most middle books of a trilogy, this one does not lull or spend overmuch time simply setting up the final book. Instead, this one moves briskly, introducing new characters seamlessly and growing the core group all with in an action filled story that still drives the overall plot towards the final encounter. A very enjoyable ride with some subtle and not so subtle nods towards history. I appreciated that the names of the designated interment camps for actives were actual camps used by the US government during WWII for those of Japanese decent.

lost in the wilderness
Revisado: 10-10-13
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I really enjoyed the first book of this series and was looking forward to continuing the journey. Unfortunately this second book feels like it was written by someone else. The story meanders and drags. Too much looking back and inner dialog with very little action. The narration is awkward with the female voice reading so deliberately its as if she is reading to second graders. I have hopes the third in the series will get back on track
