Historia
Matt Helm was aware of Bultman—a legendary assassin, the leader of a group of fanatical revolutionaries, an ambitious criminal—but he had no business with taking him down. Until now. Bultman blew up a restaurant on the Florida coast full of innocent people, including Helm’s son. Now, it’s very personal.

Classic Hamilton
Revisado: 08-07-24
He never changes and I wish his novels never ended. I have read Matt Helm since the inception, and never tire of his wit and personality. Hamilton was a master at this genre and the character he created.

Historia
Peter Diamond, head of Bath CID, takes a city break in Vienna, where his favorite film, The Third Man, was set, but everything goes wrong, and his companion, Paloma, calls a halt to their relationship. Meanwhile, strange things are happening to jobbing musician Mel Farran, who finds himself scouted by methods closer to the spy world than the concert platform. The chance of joining a once-famous string quartet in a residency at Bath Spa University is too tempting for Mel to refuse. Then a body is found in the city canal, and the only clue to the dead woman’s identity is the tattoo of a music note on one of her teeth.

Okay but not the best Diamond Investigation
Revisado: 07-01-23
Most of this was deflated by the narrator. Just got used to Prebble. Story was sort of flat and labor intensive.

Historia
Doctor Robert Branch was a university professor, not a secret agent. But his best friend was dead and Branch knew that it couldn't have been suicide. He was also certain that the murder had been arranged by a Nazi espionage group operating on campus. The only trouble was, no one would believe him. Branch knew that the Nazis would have him eliminated as soon as it was convenient.

Loved the twists of this novel with a university setting. Not a spoiler, but except for the barn square dance sequence, it is very solid structurally.

Historia
Written with the participation of the group's key members, including reclusive singer-songwriter Paul Westerberg, bassist Tommy Stinson, and the family of late guitarist Bob Stinson, Trouble Boys is a deeply intimate and nuanced portrait, exposing the primal factors and forces - addiction, abuse, fear - that would shape one of the most brilliant and notoriously self-destructive bands of all time.

In my view, LZ is probably the most important band of the 20th Century. This biography revealed the dark and excessive behavior of band members and management. At times it was disturbing to hear, but well worth it in the end. Highly recommended.

Historia
When Mark Lanegan first arrived in Seattle in the mid-1980s, he was just "an arrogant, self-loathing redneck waster seeking transformation through rock 'n' roll." Little did he know that within less than a decade, he would rise to fame as the frontman of the Screaming Trees, and then fall from grace as a low-level crack dealer and a homeless heroin addict, all the while watching some of his closest friends rocket to the forefront of popular music.

This is one of the best and most honest accounts of Lanegan’s days with ST, but also his conflict with creative impulses and innate appetite for substances. A must read/listen on both levels.

Historia
Drawn from the secret, never-before-seen diaries, journals, and sexual records of the novelist, poet, and university professor Samuel M. Steward, Secret Historian is a sensational reconstruction of one of the more extraordinary hidden lives of the 20th century. An intimate friend of Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and Thornton Wilder, Steward maintained a secret sex life from childhood on and documented these experiences in brilliantly vivid and often very funny detail.

Spring’s account of Steward’s life is an exceedingly well documented and comprehensive examination of a complex literary and cultural figure. I can give no higher recommendation for any work.
