Good story
Revisado: 03-27-25
It was a good read. Not great — the plot lacked surprise for me and I found the narrator’s approximation of a Midwestern accent almost painful. But it was a well-researched tale, and when the narrator was in any other character, she was great.

Enjoyed this story except for the interminable drawing out of Lily’s dithering on every decision. I didn’t buy that she’d have taken up again with Brendan. Lots of her decisions felt forced by the plot.

Satisfying and informative
Revisado: 12-31-24
I always wondered about the details around this raid. They were kept classified for so long, and it was chilling to find out what faced some of these brave heroes. As always, Buzz Bernard does his research deeply and gives us the details couched in a plot and characters that hold our attention. I so appreciate his ability to balance the action and military history with just enough romance and no graphic, gratuitous sex. The author is a class act and manages to hold our interest without that, moving the story along with realistic dialogue and relatable characters. This series just gets better with every title!

One of the more grittily realistic war stories I’ve read
Revisado: 12-04-24
Complex, well-developed characters with believable motivations and behaviors. A few ingenious plot twists I didn’t see coming, and some I did. Rich, evocative writing, and a believably flawed hero. Really enjoyed this story!

Highly recommended for all who, like I, have harbored curiosity about Beryl Markham. I believe this is one of those stories that prove that fiction can sometimes be more truthful than pure fact.

Historia
After her mother’s passing, Aldona finds a tin filled with old letters from a prisoner at Ravensbrück, a women’s concentration camp in northern Germany. Amid the descriptions of daily deprivations and humiliations at the camp, she uncovers the heart-wrenching story of a small circle of women who risked their lives to hide a baby girl from the guards. Aldona is rocked to the core by this record of courage and sisterhood during one of the grimmest chapters of human history.

Had to ration my reading!
Revisado: 09-17-22
I listened to this audiobook while performing chores during a summer job. It made the work go fast, because I hardly noticed what I was actually doing, since I was so absorbed in the story. The characters are so well-drawn and believable, that it wasn’t until the author’s note at the end that I understood they weren’t actual historical figures. For anyone who writes, you’ll understand what a compliment that is. Even after I would finish my day’s tasks, I wanted to keep listening because I was so engrossed in this story, but knowing I still had days’ worth of work ahead, didn’t want to finish it too quickly! I’m a WWII buff, and I knew somewhat of the Ploesti Raid, but this story really brought it to life and gave me context for its critical importance to the War. I read a LOT on this subject, and can wholeheartedly recommend this book as an incredible tale, masterfully told. Bravo, Mr. Bernard!

Realistic and well-researched
Revisado: 11-18-20
I usually see one of two types of historical drama in a romance: one that’s heavy on the romance and light on accurate historical research and believability; and one that’s well-researched and believable but dry in the emotional narrative. This one threads that needle nicely in a good balance between the two. Also a good cast of likable, true-to-life characters and effective sustaining of tension keeps the story moving along. Really enjoyed it!

Entertaining
Revisado: 01-06-15
I live this series and all the characters in it. This one was especially interesting since the main protagonist has a health issue. I figured out about halfway through who was the murderer but nevertheless was entertained by how the story ufolded. You just can't go wrong with Rita Mae's Crozet crowd.
