Strangely uninvolving
Revisado: 12-20-23
Lucas seemed to be going through the motions at times and, instead of going along with the story, the reader/listener is merely an observer. Not the best but still fun.

Historia
Every town needs a hero, and Detective Cal Farrell fits the bill. He stopped an active shooter six months earlier, and now he’s become the darling of the Alexandria press. The problem is that Cal remembers nothing from that day. He’s working with a psychiatrist to recover his memories, but hasn’t had much luck. Then, on one of his morning runs, he is once again the first on scene for a grisly discovery—a body hanging impossibly high on a tree. Soon there’s another victim, killed by a blade and dumped in a ravine.

Historia
From the preeminent Hitler biographer, a fascinating and original exploration of how the Third Reich was willing and able to fight to the bitter end of World War II. Countless books have been written about why Nazi Germany lost World War II, yet remarkably little attention has been paid to the equally vital question of how and why it was able to hold out as long as it did.

Great overview of the last months
Revisado: 10-02-21
Kershaw has written extensively about Hitler and the Third Reich. This excellent book breaks down the final months as the situation became more dire for the Germans as the Russians press from the East and the Allies from the West. Kershaw gives us a wide variety of villains, liars, syncopates, cowards who surrounded Hitler and his minions. Great amounts of detail and anecdotes to illustrate the fall. Highly recommended!

Historia
A classic of its kind, The Long Gray Line is the 25-year saga of the West Point class of 1966. With a novelist's eye for detail, Rick Atkinson illuminates this powerful story through the lives of three classmates and the women they loved - from the boisterous cadet years, to the fires of Vietnam, to the hard peace and internal struggles that followed the war.

An important look at USMA and the men it produced.
Revisado: 07-31-21
This is an excellent book by historian Rick Atkinson. It is not in the same vein as his superb 3 volume study of the US Army in Africa and Europe during WW2; it is a personal account of young men becoming warriors. A minor flaw - "Honky Tonk Women" came out in 1969, not in 1964. Of course, Atkinson could be referring to another song..
Anyway, a fine book.

Dated, sexist, cardboard characters, predicable.
Revisado: 06-15-21
This is ancient historical fluff. Annoying fluff at that. Glad it was a freebee as I have hated to go through the hassle of returning it. Listening, just wanted it to end. I stayed with it as I am interested in the Civil War but this surely is NOT The Killer Angels - more like The Insipid Dummies.

Historia
It is late 1862, and the United States has been ripped apart by civil war for over a year with no end in sight. The war is a distant thought to Johannes Wolf, a young German immigrant with a crippled leg keeping him off the muster lists. Desperately dredging the gutters for recruits, Wolf cons his way into the depleted, demoralized, and poorly run Union army, and is promptly placed in the undesirable F Company of the 13th Michigan Cavalry.

In this poignant audio piece, Samantha Allen takes listeners along for the wild ride of her own transition: The good, the bad, but mostly, the funny. Because once she began this life-changing journey in earnest, Samantha realized that while the emotional trials of gender dysphoria and self-discovery could be harrowing, there were so many laugh-out-loud moments along this winding road.

Samantha Allen writes of her life, going from a confused, closeted young Mormon boy to transitioning into a woman. Rarely does this type of story, from the initial feelings of other to the culmination of her True Self been so clearly expressed. Her narration is spot on and the story is compelling.

While the story is interesting, the reading is atrocious. The reader has the most annoying cadence; his intonation patterns, the constant rising mid-sentence stress got so bad I had to quit the book.
