Historia
Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Excellent
Revisado: 09-04-20
The Winds of War and War and Remembrance are truly literary masterpieces. The epic story can be considered as a drama and romance overlaid with a World War II story, or as a World War II story overlaid with drama and romance as both descriptions fit. It can also be dually thought of as a cross between fiction and non-fiction since the fictional story contains tremendous historical detail. And, in the case of the audio edition, the narration is superb.

Narration Ruined It For Me
Revisado: 11-19-18
The story is good enough. But the narrator speaks in a low monotone and mumbles lines which made the story hard to follow in places unless you are sitting, totally focused on listening. I'm always doing something while listening so never felt engaged in the story. To be fair, the narrator's approach fits the main character well but it made it a hard listen so it wasn't enjoyable.

Good But Not The Best
Revisado: 08-28-17
Any additional comments?
I've listened to all of the books in this series and I think fans will mostly enjoy this offering, That said, I didn't think this story was as strong as the others, and was a tad short. Unfortunately, Castillo has started to pepper these novels with the F-word, which is fast becoming the most over-used word on the planet. I'm no prude, just tired of hearing every man/woman/child repeatedly say it in every show/movie/book. So, I've come to prefer offerings where characters can express themselves without frequent retreat to vulgarity which, sadly, no longer includes these novels.

Once upon a time, in a land blighted by terror, there was a very clever boy. The people thought the boy could save them, so they opened their gates and sent him out into the world. To where the monsters lived.

Good Second Book
Revisado: 05-14-17
Any additional comments?
This is a follow on book to The Girl With All The Gifts and is an enjoyable read for fans of that book. Though a prequel, I recommend that newcomers still read The Girl With All The Gifts first. The characters in The Girl are more compelling, and it provides more detail on how the apocalypse came to be. Having these tools prepares readers to better enjoy The Boy On The Bridge. Also, there is a very satisfying twist at the end of the Boy On The Bridge that is totally lost if you haven’t read the Girl With All The Gifts. As a standalone work, The Boy On The Bridge is quite average but, viewed through the lens of the Girl With All The Gifts, it is also a compelling read.

Weakest of the Series
Revisado: 04-29-17
Any additional comments?
I've done all the Coop books on audio and enjoyed them. I thought Night Watch was fair at best, and the weakest of the series. Lots of tedious detail and dialog and not much story. I don't think the older sounding Ms. Rosenblat has ever been a good choice for the younger characters of this series, but I adjusted. In this one, however, her attempt at a French accent made some of the dialog difficult to understand.

Disappointing Second Book
Revisado: 04-27-17
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed the first book as the author hit the sweet spot for Buck making him ornery yet humorous and endearing. In this book, however, I thought Buck came across as simply mean, bordering on sadistic. Thus, the lines intended to be humorous fell flat, and the plentiful swearing came across as vulgar rather than funny. The book also involved an alternating timeline that made the story harder to follow. Finally, the book employs numerous derogatory comments about minorities that, while in context for the time and place depicted, can be offensive to the modern ear, decreasing enjoyment of the narrative.

Bad Narration Choice
Revisado: 10-28-16
Any additional comments?
I've listened to all of the Brady books up to this issue and enjoyed the stories and the narrator. For this book, the producer attempted a dual male/female narration that didn't work. The switch between narrators was distracting and made the story hard to follow. And, while the male narrator may be a good Beaumont in those books, he was not a good choice for the characters in the Brady book. If you can, read this one and skip the audible version.
