Unique fairy tale
Revisado: 10-22-23
I loved this book and will definitely read more by the author. This despite the weird middle-of-sentence breaks by the narrator, who I otherwise liked very much. Had trouble putting it down.

Some may want to read instead of listen
Revisado: 09-14-23
I have not watched the Mr. Mercedes TV series but I realize now this is why the audiobook was not narrated by Will Patton. If you have only experienced Holly with Will’s voice and cadence you may be disappointed in this listen. This said, the narrator is actually quite good, but Will’s rendition is perfect Holly for me.
I enjoyed the story. It was like a Law & Order Criminal Intent where the audience knows the bad guys and the story is how the protagonists figure things out. I found it intriguing but not scary, if you are looking for scares. Covid-19 is a player in the story line. I did think King was too heavy handed early in the novel, but it evens out to Covid references as a reasonable backdrop throughout most of the book.
I enjoyed this listen but I’ll say again, Will Patton did the perfect Holly. Recommend you listen to the excerpts and then decide whether to experience this story over Audible or the written word.

Historia
Michael Hiebert’s remarkable debut novel tells the riveting story of a small Southern town haunted by tragedy. Abe Teal wasn’t even born when Ruby Mae Vickers went missing twelve years ago. Few people in Alvin, Alabama, talk about the months spent looking for her, or about how Ruby Mae’s lifeless body was finally found beneath a willow tree. Even Abe’s mom, Leah, Alvin’s only detective, has avoided the subject. But now, another girl is missing.

Delightful
Revisado: 02-27-23
While there is a solid murder mystery in the background, the true strength of this book is the depiction of life from the viewpoint of an 11 year old boy and his rather clueless sidekick. The narrator captured Abe perfectly. Perhaps it’s channeling lessons from To Kill a Mockingbird but that doesn’t matter. I loved every word of this listen.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Great listen but suspend disbelief
Revisado: 02-13-23
I enjoyed this listen from beginning to end. I did not guess who was ally and who was villain. I did suspect a version of what actually played out—and here I have to align with those who said far fetched. While I can buy into the degree of amnesia assigned to a main character per medical condition plus trauma, I cannot accept that family and medical professionals nursing the person back to health could miss this critical piece of the person’s condition. Despite this, I truly enjoyed this book and recommend the listen.

Love this series
Revisado: 01-26-23
I quickly consumed all four books included in my membership and found them delightful. The point of view of the wisecracking protagonist was fun, and the mysteries were intriguing. The fourth book changed narrators, but Bronson Pinchot I’d one of my favorites and I found even listening back to back with MacLeod Andrews book 4 was no less enjoyable. Highly recommend the series. Recommend you read them in order.

Fascinating story
Revisado: 01-03-23
I have devoured the Jenny Cooper novels one by one. The independent coroner inquest is very different from the system in my country, and the mysteries have been fascinating, this one in particular. I am less interested in the resolution of Jenny’s personal troubles but that in no way detracts from my enjoyment of these books. As always the narration is stellar. Highly recommended.

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 12-29-22
I am a fan of zombie fiction. This novel is of the human reaction type. The details were, for me, a solid depiction of how people might think, feel, and act during a zombie apocalypse. The decisions and noble gestures in the final few chapters were not the best, but regardless if there were a subsequent book I’d pick it up.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Loved it
Revisado: 08-22-22
There is a large disparity between the written reviews and the thousands of five star reviews that make up the average rating. It looks like those who loved the book submitted their 5* and those who were disappointed disliked it so much they were compelled to write a review. I’m one who loved it.
There is a murder mystery wound through the novel, but I more found this a slowly and beautifully developing story of how the marsh girl came to be. I listened straight through. The details of the marsh and Kya’s observations were fascinating. Five stars from me.

Manipulative in the end
Revisado: 07-23-22
Semi-spoiler here.
I am aligned with the reviewer who said, wait, what??? I’m curious if in the written form there were better clues of whose memories were whose. If no, then the ending reveal strikes me as a cheat. It’s clear that all of the “then” sequences did not belong to our main heroine but in audible form they certainly came across that way.
This said, I enjoyed the entire listening experience until that ending. So I’m giving it the benefit of the doubt re: cheating. Great narration.
