I loved the writing, as always. The retreaded "Batman vs. Superman" plot device, not so much.

This mini-saga of five young friends chasing the same dream starts off with a long exhibition dump more suitable to a novel than a short story. Overall, I enjoyed reading this, including Ed Harris' narration, but was disappointed by the ending.

Short on plot, long on hallucinations. Still, an enjoyable read for those like me who have enjoyed Clete's involvement in the Robichaux novels over the years.

Many flaws. I hope this writer is able to improve in later books. I'll never know.

On a par with the best of Alex Dumas and the Count of Monte Cristina

With "iron resolve," I vow not to read anymore of this turgidly written crapola. Unfinishable, after barely 2 chapters.

This is one of the few Audible novels I will be listening to twice -- if not more. Stephen Hunter is the single best action/thriller writer out there, an icon of the genre emulated by more recent war lords such as Mark Greaney, whom I also love to read. Here, Swagger is tasked with defeating a German crack sniper team in the French "bullet garden," i.e. a patchwork of trees and open fields perfect for sniper activity. As well, there's a second plot stream about spies that also kept my interest. Highly recommended. Welcome back Stephen Hunter!

I downloaded this book expecting something along the lines of Jack Reacher or the Gray man. After about an hour of listening to him shouting into the microphone, affecting cliched voices, and generally hamming it up, I had to stop. I'm going to return this audible version and probably purchase the kindle.

This early Perry title represents yet another variation on a popular short story by Richard Connell, though the author pulls it off better than most. The main character, Mallon, is pursued by a gaggle of killers who are mostly out for sport. Little do they know that Mallon has the advantage of a super power: uncanny good luck. The only real flaw in the novel, apart from too much focus on irrelevant back stories of very minor characters, is one huge and unbelievable coincidence involving Mallon's attorney. The narrator, Michael Kramer, once again mangles the pronunciations of California cities and towns, though apart from that he is an effective reader. He just needs to spend some time in SoCal.

I've read and listened to this iconic crime novel twice now, and am starting the third. If you can listen to the first 15 minutes without being hooked, good luck to you. The ribald story told by the Honourable Meg, by itself, is well worth the price of admission.
