Historia
July 1346. Ten men land on the beaches of Normandy. They call themselves the Essex Dogs: an unruly platoon of archers and men-at-arms led by a battle-scarred captain whose best days are behind him. The fight for the throne of the largest kingdom in Western Europe has begun. Heading ever deeper into enemy territory toward Crécy, this band of brothers knows they are off to fight a battle that will forge nations, and shape the very fabric of human lives. But first they must survive a bloody war in which rules are abandoned and chivalry itself is slaughtered.

Raw and Real
Revisado: 10-19-24
Enigmatic chunk of history brought to life with wonderful description, dialogue and details and anchored in firsthand sources. Real -feeling men. Felt I was there with all the hard asses in the raw and oddly ordered chaos. Fabulous delivery.

Historia
By 1120, Henry was perhaps the most formidable ruler in Europe, with an enviable record on the battlefield, immense lands and wealth and unprecedented authority in his kingdoms. Everything he had worked so hard for was finally achieved, and he was ready to hand it on to his beloved son and heir, William Ætheling. Henry I and his retinue set out first. The White Ship - considered the fastest afloat - would follow, carrying the young prince. Spoilt and arrogant, William had plied his comrades and crew with drink from the minute he stepped aboard....

I couldn’t get very far, maybe it got better. Seemed like erudite but irrelevant information about people and events that had nothing to do with the white ship.

Historia
Werner Herzog was born in September 1942 in Munich, Germany, at a turning point in the Second World War. Soon Germany would be defeated and a new world would have to be made out the rubble and horrors of the war. Fleeing the Allied bombing raids, Herzog’s mother took him and his older brother to a remote, rustic part of Bavaria where he would spend much of his childhood hungry, without running water, in deep poverty. It was there, as the new postwar order was emerging, that one of the most visionary filmmakers of the next seven decades was formed.

Gift to the World
Revisado: 11-29-23
He is a wonder and a treasure. Incredible heart, intelligence, power, intensity, curiosity, daring… yet a humble man with his hat off to beauty and the awesomeness of existence. Makes me think our species has a chance.

Astonishing performance, astonishing writing. Can’t take it in that anyone would rate either less than that. I listen to it again and again and it continues to be astonishingly brilliant.

Superior to Disney.
Revisado: 05-06-20
Antequated language and a plot that is tediously redundant, but nonetheless better than most of what I find out there for young children. Our 7 and 9-year-olds loved it. Wonderfully presented with different voices, one reader, that infuse a lot of charm and character into the dialogue. Overall superior to the Disney version, that just took the main ideas.

Pure Delight
Revisado: 03-11-20
This book sets the bar for the Fairy genre. It was pure delight to be swept up in the author’s exquisite description and detail so beautifully, sonorously delivered, perfectly attuned to his intention in the words. I’m going to listen it again.

Historia
Actor William Shaksper of Stratford had little education, never left England, and apparently owned no books. How could he have written the great plays and poetry attributed to him? Journalist Mark Anderson's biography offers tantalizing proof that Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, courtier, spendthrift, scholar, traveler, soldier, scoundrel, and writer, was the real "Shakespeare".

Behind the Mask
Revisado: 12-23-19
This book will surely inspire new generations of biographies. It is such a privilege to see at last the man behind the mask that history has swallowed. It made me want to read “Shakespeare” all over again and more perceptibly, with affection and gratitude for the noble genius who spoke truth to power and so empowered speech.
