Historia
We live in the age of the algorithm. Increasingly, the decisions that affect our lives—where we go to school, whether we can get a job or a loan, how much we pay for health insurance—are being made not by humans, but by machines. In theory, this should lead to greater fairness: Everyone is judged according to the same rules.

Decent concepts but lacks concrete remedies.
Revisado: 01-23-25
The first half of the book is far more compelling than the second. The author makes several good point about ensure data systems incorporates a concern for the humans they impact. That message is very applicable for us data types that love to quantify everything with hard numbers.
However, she started to lose me as the discussion became more preachy. The author seamlessly switches from bemoaning the use of group categorization robbing people of individual scrutiny to berating insurance companies for using individualized models that prevent people from hiding their bad driving habits amongst the crowd. To complain about both of those in what was essentially the same breath seemed hypocritical and lacked self-awareness.
In the end, there are no solutions given except stop building systems to maximize “evil” profit and start leaving it on the table for the less fortunate. Not a terrible takeaway, but I didn’t need the smug sense of moral superiority that came with it.

Today we think statistics are the enemy, numbers used to mislead and confuse us. That’s a mistake, Tim Harford says in The Data Detective. We shouldn’t be suspicious of statistics - we need to understand what they mean and how they can improve our lives: they are, at heart, human behavior seen through the prism of numbers and are often “the only way of grasping much of what is going on around us”.

A wonderfully insightful book!
Revisado: 08-27-24
Tin is one of the great science communicators for our time and he really does a tremendous job of capturing the upsides and downsides of data communication in the modern age. I particularly like his emphasis on being truthful, but also persuasive with chart development. Just one of the many strong points in this book.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Historia
In 1982, at the age of just 23 and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60/6. Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes, and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. She had ridden bikes since her teens and was well-traveled. But nothing could prepare her for what lay ahead.

Great take of overcoming adversity.
Revisado: 06-03-23
This is a great tale of overcoming the challenges and cultural differences found around the world. It does have undercurrents of teenage angst that haven’t seemed to ease with time, but there is a real human element that hasn’t been filtered out that is this books real diamond in the rough. I’ve read several reviews that criticize it for dwelling on negative points of the journey. If you are a reader looking for nothing more than a triumphant story of lighthearted adventure so you can mentally escape a mundane life, this is not the book for you. If you want a book that illustrates the ups and downs encounter throughout a life of adventure and also touched on the near inevitable joys and struggles of returning to a more traditional life, then you’ve found the right book.

Historia
On October 6, 1973, Ted Simon knew there was no going back. He loaded up his 500cc Triumph Tiger in the pouring rain and said good-bye to London. Over four years he rode 64,000 miles round the world. Breakdowns, revolutions, war, a spell in prison, and a Californian commune were all part of his experience, which was colored variously by utter despair and unimaginable joy. He was treated as a spy, a god, a welcome stranger and a curiosity

Absolutely superb, but be careful…
Revisado: 05-31-23
This is a truly wonderful, entertaining tale of adventure and overcoming the confines of a world that seems determined to guide each of us into routine and monotony. Be careful though, for the inspiration of it makes the prospect of leaving the comfortable life behind seem like a forgone decision. If you, like me, are susceptible to bouts of wanderlust and dissatisfaction with a perfectly good, comfortable life, this book will only exacerbate the itch to go off into the unknown parts of the world. Ted does a wonderful job of contrasting the freedom of such a choice with the heartache that is sure to accompany the journey.

Couldn’t Keep Listening, Narrator ruined it.
Revisado: 09-15-21
A friend recommended this book to me, and I’m sure the content is informative. That being said, I only made it an hour into it before I just couldn’t stand the way Marcus was reading anymore. His vocal inflections while reading were stochastic, and almost made it seem like he was out of breath the whole time. Maybe exasperated is the right word. I’d be interested to see the text version and find out if every sentence actually has two or three commas. He also takes a big breath and a long pause right before saying the last two or three words of every sentence. It makes sense every once and a while for emphasis, but definitely. Not. [inhale]… every-single-sentence.

And then, there's his highly-publicized plans for colonizing Mars.... But behind the mind-blowing headlines and legendary drive is the story of a bullied and beaten school boy, who through creativity and determination decided to rewrite his story and find his own way to make the world a better place. Definitely a YA book. Provides some inspiration for young people, but more of a Fluff Piece.
Revisado: 07-28-21
Like a few other reviews I read, my opinion softened a little bit when I realized this book was written as a YA biography. It is pretty “hip” with some of it’s styles. It’s difficult to listen too because of the many pauses for shoutouts and bullet points I’m sure look good in print. The narration style was overly dramatic and would undoubtedly fit in well at a sorority formal. The book felt like an extended Fluff piece from a magazine. If you’re older than 16, you will be much better off getting “Elon Musk” by Ashlee Vance. The content is about the same, and it is written for a more educated and mature audience.

Historia
From mechanical looms to the combustion engine to the first computers, new technologies have always provoked panic about workers being replaced by machines. For centuries, such fears have been misplaced, and many economists maintain that they remain so today. But as Daniel Susskind demonstrates, this time really is different. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence mean that all kinds of jobs are increasingly at risk.

I may not agree with the views, but the book was interesting
Revisado: 05-20-21
I do not agree with the framing of many of the issues set forth in the book, but it is well written and thought provoking. I think it is important to challenge our own view points and this book successfully did that for me. It has some Marxist undertones with slightly more refined arguments. That being said, it provided some novel perspectives for consideration. I don’t think the author is right, but he certainly has spent some time thinking about the consequences of automation.

Alright Book, Decent Information, Bad Narration
Revisado: 04-16-21
This is a decent book that does a good job at summarizing a lot of different invention, business, and entrepreneurial skills. I wouldn’t describe it as all encompassing, but it’s better than most. The real downside with this audible version is that it is extremely hard to listen too. The narrator has a robotic, stochastic voice that I found to be irritating. It seemed like other reviews didn’t mind, so it may be a personal preference, but I feel like a text to speak computer software would have been more human like than this narrator. It almost felt like every sentence was read and recorded separately, then cut back together in editing. I wouldn’t listen to it again, but if you have no experience with early stage business strategy or when and why to patent or trade mark, this is a good place to start for foundation knowledge.

I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.
