Historia
Behind the tall, foreboding gates of a commune in Brazil, Daniella Mestyanek Young was raised in the religious cult The Children of God, also known as The Family, as the daughter of high-ranking members. Her great-grandmother donated land for one of The Family’s first communes in Texas. Her mother, at thirteen, was forced to marry the leader and served as his secretary for many years. Beholden to The Family’s strict rules, Daniella suffers physical, emotional, and sexual abuse—masked as godly discipline and divine love—and is forbidden from getting a traditional education.

Everyone Should Read
Revisado: 03-09-25
uncultured should be at minimum recommended reading for any early level medical, sociology or psychology course. There are also many other additional deeper ways it would be beneficial for the greater educational, sociological, psychological and medical communities. The education provided about the way cults and common sociological organizations mimic similar factors generally accepted by society.
Education is a powerful tool. Highly recommend it!

Historia
1916: Norma Wallace, age 15, arrived in New Orleans. Sexy and shrewd, she quickly went from streetwalker to madam and by 1920 had opened what became a legendary house of prostitution. There she entertained a steady stream of governors, gangsters, and movie stars until she was arrested at last in 1962. Shortly before she died in 1974, she tape-recorded her memories. With those tapes and original research, Christine Wiltz chronicles Norma's rise and fall with the social history of New Orleans.

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

Courageous and Heartbreaking
Revisado: 03-13-24
Jill Duggard is a strong, intelligent woman. No child should ever endure SA. In a disturbingly patriarchal family, she was placed in the position of supporting her abuser and brother to maintain the families place in public popularity and thus share their show. A show she was even as an adult expected to support with no compensation. TLC and their practices toward those in reality TV deserve to be civially charged for the abuse and neglect they encouraged and endorsed to sell their product. Jill’s courage and supportive partner gives me hope that she will be a powerful advocate for others victimized in similar ways.

Historia
New Orleans has long been America’s most magical city, inhabited by a fascinating visible and invisible world, full of mysteries, known for its decadence and haunted by its spirits. If Salem, Massachusetts is famous for its persecution of witches, New Orleans is celebrated for its embrace of the magical, mystical, and paranormal. New Orleans is acclaimed for its witches, ghosts, and vampires. Because of its unique history, New Orleans is the historical stronghold of traditional African religions and spirituality in the US.

Great history
Revisado: 03-13-24
I really enjoyed an opportunity to better understand Marie Laveau and her role in New Orleans between the voodoo, hoodoo and Catholic cultures. As someone that was Catholic it was nice to have that foundation to better understand the overlaps and differences. If you enjoy US History and the influence religion has had, this is a good read.

From the woman who is credited for launching what we know as the celebrity focused, “brand” driven, social media obsessed popular culture of today, comes an honest and surprising memoir that reckons with that truth, and shows that there is so much more to Paris Hilton than you might believe. This extended edition includes a bonus chapter detailing her motherhood journey.

A Story of Strength
Revisado: 02-06-24
I didn’t understand Paris for many, many years. I had children that were in their teen years during The Simple Life years. The character she portrayed herself to be drove me crazy. I worried that she was somehow playing up the idea of dumbing yourself down.
Time clearly has proven that the way she was portrayed in the media combined with her public persona didn’t represent the true Paris. As she reads the book, you immediate that her voice is deeper and much nicer to hear. Her ability to detail the trauma she endured in the different “schools” had me in tears more than once.
I will honestly say, I didn’t really believe I could enjoy it as much as I did.

Revisado: 11-28-23
Listening to this after Matthew’s death changes so much about the story as you listen. The pain of addiction is palpable to the point I had to come back to the story at times. I am so incredibly thankful that we have this from him before he left us. His story will continue to save lives for many, many years to come I can only hope.

Revisado: 10-19-23
I was really excited to read this. I must say aside from some attempts at twists and turns in the storyline, I find myself quite disappointed that I wasted the past few hours listening to this book. Definitely not all I rx pecked with the hype.

Historia
A down-to-earth global pop star. A deeply spiritual, cerebral powerhouse. A famously outspoken introvert. For her millions of fans, and the few unacquainted, defining rock luminary Alanis Morissette is an exercise in dichotomies and nuance. And though her most formidable traits are seemingly at odds with one another, they are, oddly enough, completely emblematic of all of us: complex, conflicting, and, most importantly, ever evolving. With her striking command of language and profound emotional fluency, the 46-year-old covers an enormous amount of personal ground with listeners.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. King’s voice makes this an excellent listen
Revisado: 10-16-23
I’ve not read much Stephen King. This book was such a great “fantasy/fairy tale” my biggest complaint is the closer to the end the story got, the more I felt it was rushed and quickly wrapped up and ended. The last couple chapters felt as if suddenly the book needed to be finished and the story was suddenly ended and wrapped up. It left me feeling unsettled with the rushed nature.
