Historia
Spies, codes, and guerrillas played unprecedentedly critical roles in the Second World War, exploited by every nation in the struggle to gain secret knowledge of its foes, and to sow havoc behind the fronts. In The Secret War, Max Hastings presents a worldwide cast of characters and some extraordinary sagas of intelligence and resistance, to create a new perspective on the greatest conflict in history.

Some interesting stories, poorly organized
Revisado: 04-22-21
I love WWII history and very much appreciated this contribution. I think it would have been better to read this book, though. The complexity of the intertwined stories precluded presentation in a strictly chronological order. When listening to the book, the dates jumped around a lot and it was much more difficult to keep things straight in your head. Reading would probably have made this much easier. The narration was strong. The best part was about the spy ring that obtained US nuclear secrets. That would probably make a great book on its own.

Historia
In the late summer of 1944, SS-Obergruppenführer Wilhelm ‘Willi’ Bittrich found himself in the Netherlands surveying his II SS Panzer Corps, which was in a poor state having narrowly escaped the defeat in Normandy. He was completely unaware that his command lay directly in the path of a major Allied thrust: the 17 September 1944 launch of the largest airborne and glider operation in the history of warfare.

A bit challenging to stay focused on
Revisado: 01-15-21
I'm not sure why, but I found it difficult to stay on point with this book. The topic was of interest to me. But it took me a long time to get through and most of the time I felt my mind wandering. It wasn't the narrator. Too bad, because this is an interesting set of historical events.

The year is 1970. Emma Gable, a blind teenager coming of age in a small industrial town in Western New York, is about as far from the seismic cultural transformations rocking campuses and city streets across America as a person can get. Emma escapes the chaos of her dysfunctional family by dialing up random numbers on the phone in her bedroom, just to see who'll answer.

Rote story of evil Big Business
Revisado: 08-24-20
This was an entirely predictable story of evil big business (pharma or govt) that seeks to keep their environmental impacts off of the books. The main character's mother dies from cancer. There is a conspiracy to cover it up. Blah, blah, blah. Same old story line except that a homosexual subthread is thrown in because it is so cool to be gay and edgy these days.

Historia
The German invasion of Poland on 1 September, 1939, designated as Fall Weiss (Case White), was the event that sparked the outbreak of World War II in Europe. The campaign has widely been described as a textbook example of Blitzkrieg, but it was actually a fairly conventional campaign as the Wehrmacht was still learning how to use its new Panzers and dive-bombers. The Polish military is often misrepresented as hopelessly obsolete and outclassed by the Wehrmacht, yet in fact it was well-equipped with modern weapons and armor.

Quite technical, but worth the listen.
Revisado: 06-17-20
While this book wasn't as good as "Where the Iron Crosses Grow," I still really like this book and appreciate the fine level of detail. I always learn a lot from Forczyk's books. He is incredibly thorough and paints a precise picture of events. For example, I had no idea how much warning and pleading Churchill gave to France to send their navy to Britain or the US to prevent it from falling into Nazi hands. If you like technical analyses of WWII battles and history, then this is the book for you.

Historia
In The Sense of Style, the best-selling linguist and cognitive scientist Steven Pinker answers these questions and more. Rethinking the usage guide for the 21st century, Pinker doesn’t carp about the decline of language or recycle pet peeves from the rulebooks of a century ago. Instead, he applies insights from the sciences of language and mind to the challenge of crafting clear, coherent, and stylish prose.

Lots of useful tips
Revisado: 11-25-19
I would have rated this with 4 overall stars, but it was a bit challenging to listen to this book. Reading it hard copy works have been better. The author is clearly a gifted writer and does an excellent job of writing a style guide so that it is more of a story.

Historia
You probably know that food, water, sunlight, and oxygen are required for life, but there is a fifth element of health that is equally vital and often overlooked: The Earth's magnetic field and its corresponding PEMFs (pulsed electromagnetic fields). The two main components of Earth's PEMFs, the Schumann and Geomagnetic frequencies, are so essential that NASA and the Russian space program equip their spacecrafts with devices that replicate these frequencies.

Nothing startling in the book other than the author espousing a link between thimerosal and autism. This is irresponsible and dangerous. He is clearly undereducated in that arena.

A bit outdated
Revisado: 05-24-19
I would have truly enjoyed this book when it first came out, but 9 years later it is a bit outdated. And many of the predictions have yet to materialize so it seems it was overly optimistic. Nevertheless, not a bad listen, I would just recommend finding something more current.

Historia
A military expert reveals how science fiction is fast becoming reality on the battlefield, changing not just how wars are fought, but also the politics, economics, laws, and ethics that surround war itself. Singer’s previous books foretold the rise of private military contractors and the advent of child soldiers - predictions that have proved all too accurate. Now he explores the greatest revolution in military affairs since the atom bomb: robotic warfare. We are now seeing a massive shift in military technology....

Exceeded expectations
Revisado: 05-24-19
In addition to the expected discussion of AI weapon systems, this book delved a lot deeper into things I had not even considered. For example, there were discussions of ethics, human reactions to AI systems, implications for society, humanity, and cultures, legal quagmires, doctrinal impacts, sociopolitical impacts and so on. Quite insightful and the author clearly has spent a lot of time thinking these issues through.

Really dated
Revisado: 03-20-19
As a scifi story, there is not much here. It got pretty boring as the main characters kept getting busy signals on their phone lines. Guess the author could not foresee that we would overcome that problem. Also, they used steamer trunks for luggage. Maybe you learn a little about the plague, but overall this is a slow story without much excitement. Skip it.

Historia
Tank Rider is the riveting memoir of Evgeni Bessonov telling of his years of service at the vanguard of the Red Army and daily encounters with the German foe. He brings large-scale battles to life, recounts the sniping and skirmishing that tried and tested soldiers on both sides, and narrates the overwhelming tragedy and horror of apocalyptic warfare on the Eastern Front. So much of the Soviet experience of World War II remains untold, but this memoir provides an important glimpse into some of the most decisive moments of this overlooked history.

A little dry
Revisado: 02-16-19
Not particularly well written. It was a bit hard to stay focused on this book because there were never really any "grab your attention" moments. The soldier was incredibly lucky over and over, but the writing was not at all conducive to the listener being on the edge of his seat as the descriptions were fairly dry.
