Enjoyable read with a satisfying ending
Revisado: 06-04-24
As with most of Gothic-setting thrillers, some suspension of disbelief is required, but from there on this is a thoroughly enjoyable read with a satisfying ending. I listened to the whole book in a day, and I will be getting more from this author

Anne Shirley has left Redmond College behind to begin a new job and a new chapter of her life away from Green Gables. Now she faces a new challenge: the Pringles. They're known as the royal family of Summerside--and they quickly let Anne know she is not the person they had wanted as principal of Summerside High School. Love the book, not the narration
Revisado: 02-24-24
Of the 9 books in the Green Gables series this is one of my favourites. I have never been able to get it on kindle or on audible in the region where I live, and when I found it was at last available I instantly got it. As much as I enjoy the story, the narrator really spoils it for me. She's not entirely horrible, but delivers the performance in a steady rhythm that often does not reflect the content. Since I love the content and know it almost by heart it is quite disappointing to hear emphasis in the wrong place

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Historia
Getting a life isn't always easy. And hanging on to it is even harder.... Jodi Taylor brings all her comic writing skills to this heartwarming tale of self-discovery. Known as The Nothing Girl because of her severe stutter and chronically low self-confidence, Jenny Dove is only just prevented from ending it all by the sudden appearance of Thomas, a mystical golden horse only she can see. Under his guidance Jenny unexpectedly acquires a husband - the charming and chaotic Russell Checkland.

Historia
In the court of King George IV, Major Mearns - an old dog of war and veteran of Willington's army - is the guardian of Windsor Castle. Some would call him a spy; he calls himself a "watcher." Working with his close friend, the resourceful Sergeant Denny, the pair maintain a cool facade behind which they go about their duties quietly and unnoticed. Unnoticed, that is, until the day Mearns receives a parcel containing a gruesome surprise: a pair of severed human legs.

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Greg Dixon is living a nightmare. Attending boarding school outside of Boston, he is separated from his family when a pandemic strikes. Didn't live up to its potential
Revisado: 10-06-20
The narration was great, but the story, which was intriguing to start with, did not live up to its potential, and became increasingly mundane. It also became less and less believable, with the ending so far stretched that, even though I saw it coming, I could not believe it was happening. It made me angry, and I feel that I have wasted 20 hours, only to have my intelligence insulted.
Spoiler:
A pandemic has wiped out most of humanity, with estimated 350 people surviving in North America. 30 of these people have found each other and have to move to a location with the best prospects for long-term survival, and ... they decide to go to Hawaii. They are able to do so because one of the survivors happens to be a pilot, but once they make this unlikely journey they ware doomed to be stuck, with no possibility of ever getting back or of any further survivors joining them. An island, especially one as distant as Hawaii, just isn't the best long-term bet. Why not stay on the mainland and try to restart some of those abandoned solar or wind farms? or an oil refinery (did I mention that one of the survivors is a bona fide genius? What are the odds?).
I really expected this book to go in a different direction. I didn't mind the lack of action or conflict (although I found it a bit unrealistic as the group of survivors grew), but I thought it would be ingenious like "The Martian". Unfortunately not. With libraries full of knowledge and country full of abandoned resources, this group chooses a course that will see them doomed to extinction through inbreeding. And that is if a volcano or a tsunami doesn't wipe them out first.

Unconvincing
Revisado: 10-30-19
Although I found the writing style pretty good and engrossing, the storyline left me unconvinced. I found the main character, Darcy, difficult to believe in. She initially seems like a strong character, but then she confronts her mother, and becomes a quivering mess. The 8-year old nephew is also full of contradictions, and not like any 8-year old I've ever come across. The mother starts off bitter and unrelenting, and she is kind of interesting at this stage, but then suddenly becomes quite kindly, and no, it's not character development. It's like a different character altogether. The big family secret, which is supposed to be at the heart of it all, is really no secret at all, since you can see it coming a mile off, but keep thinking that there must be something more to it. All in all, this was not a bad book but I cannot understand how it got so many good reviews

Historia
Late Victorian London. When James Miller, the most respectable of Scottish businessmen, is pulled, dead, from the Thames, his daughter is drawn into an investigation which reveals a whole world of secrets and corruption. Alongside local detective Culley, Catriona’s search for her father’s killer leads all the way to the tragic truth behind the ghostly legend of The Darkwater Bride and the power of her deadly kiss. The Darkwater Bride combines the genres of the Victorian mystery thriller with the equally classic Victorian mode of the ghostly tale.

Endless repetition
Revisado: 06-11-19
Repetition, as a rhetorical device, is effective when used sparingly. Unfortunately this is not the case here. It is used so often that it is irritating and distracting. It makes the story feel padded and meandering

Emma Frederick bolts upright in bed, pulse racing. It must be a bad dream. Except it’s not. Crrrrrreeeeeeeeaaaaaaakkkkkkk. The sound of the loose step sends her body into overdrive, and she rushes for the secret room behind the wall. The screech of old hinges echoes through the house as he enters her bedroom. He starts whistling. Three blind mice. Three blind mice. She slaps a hand over her mouth, stifling her scream. He’s coming for her, but that can’t be. She killed him last month.

Good story, horrible narration
Revisado: 06-05-19
The story was engrossing, the characters were easy to relate to. Overall I would have rated it at 5 stars, but the twist at the end was just too contrived for me. But what hurt this book more than anything else for me was the poor narration. The narrator seemed to cope with dialogs and character's voices fairly well, but the narrative parts of a book are read with uniform inflections at end of each sentence which are very irritating and distracting. I would have considered getting more books in this series, but they are all read by the same narrator, so I'll give them a miss
