In Good Bones and Simple Murders, Margaret Atwood displays, in condensed and crystallized form, the trademark wit and virtuosity of her best-selling novels. In The Tent, Margaret Atwood has penned a collection of smart and entertaining fictional essays.

Although I didn’t love every single story, I did love most of them. Among my favorites were these excellent examples of Margaret Atwood’s humor and politics, which I like very much indeed.

Historia
The kingdom of Cornucopia was once the happiest in the world. It had plenty of gold, a king with the finest moustache you could possibly imagine, and butchers, bakers, and cheesemongers whose exquisite foods made a person dance with delight when they ate them. Everything was perfect - except for the misty Marshlands to the north, which, according to legend, were home to the monstrous Ickabog. Anyone sensible knew that the Ickabog was just a myth to scare children into behaving. But the funny thing about myths is that sometimes they take on a life of their own.

A Parable About Weak Leaders, Corruption, And Hate
Revisado: 02-19-25
Given the current events in the US, I found this a painful read. Also, the irrational hate that JK Rowling exhibits is in direct contradiction to the messages of this parable.
I bought this book quite some time ago before I realized how entrenched JK Rowling’s hate is. I am sad that she feels that way, and although I like her writing I am no longer comfortable buying or reading her work. The pleasure of the story is tarnished by knowing that she spreads hate in contrast with the values of love and goodness displayed by her finest characters.

Another Neil Gaiman Book To Love
Revisado: 01-10-25
I highly recommend this book! So far, I have not read anything by Neil Gaiman that I didn’t absolutely love. This book was another fantastic story, beautifully read by the author. Now I want to go find the illustrated edition published by DC Comics so that I can see how everything looks in the author’s and illustrator’s eyes.

Historia
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

I Guess I DO Like It Darker
Revisado: 01-05-25
As a Soul Sister to Stephen King (as he describes his Constant Reader(s) in the Afterward), I found each of these stories as rich, full, and entertaining as any of his best works. I loved every one of these stories. My favorite was Rattlesnakes which brings back a surprise character from a previous book. Finn was the most disturbing (and by this I mean thought provoking), and Dreamers provided me with a motto for 2025: FIDO. Let’s f’ing GO!

Historia
Clete Purcel—private investigator, ex-member of the New Orleans Police Department, and war veteran with a hard shell and just a few soft spots—is Dave Robicheaux’s longtime friend and partner in detective work. But he has a troubled past. When Clete leaves his car at the local car wash, only to return to find it ransacked by a group of thugs tied to the drug trade from Mexican cartels to Louisiana, it feels personal—his grandniece died of a fentanyl overdose, and his fists curl when he thinks of the dealers who sold it.

Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Enjoyable Read-I Recommend This “Beach Read”
Revisado: 12-03-24
I saw some negative reviews of this book and hesitated before choosing it, but my daughter loved the book (and we often like the same stories) so I took a chance. I’m glad I did. There was some excellent tension created as the book progressed and I enjoyed the various twists. This isn’t a deep, heavy story and it has a quick pace. It’s a perfect beach read. Well done, Ms McFadden!

Enjoyable Read-Some Loose Ends Tidied Away
Revisado: 11-24-24
I liked the way that this story was integrated with the stories in previous volumes of the series to explain some previous oddities. I liked the Hook character better than some of the previous villains. Glad I read this and looking forward to reading the final volume (for now it’s the final one) Hades.

It's a familiar tale: A kind and beautiful young girl, reeling from loss. A doting father, frantic to bring a mother's love back into his daughter's life. And the selfish, cruel woman who insinuates herself into that family - a woman so unfeeling, so cold hearted, that when her new husband dies, she makes the girl a servant in her own home.

Cruella De Vil is the perfect villain: stylish, witty, relentless...and possibly cursed. From her lonely childhood, to her iconic fashion choices, to that fateful car crash (you know the one), Cruella tells all in this marvelous memoir of a woman doomed. Even the cruelest villains have best friends, true loves, and daring dreams. Now it's Cruella's turn to share hers.

Cruella is an awful character, with no redeeming qualities. The narrator does such a good job portraying Cruella’s shrieking and cackling that me ears are bleeding. Not worth your time.
