Historia
Since first domesticating the chicken thousands of years ago, humans have become exceptionally adept at raising them for food. Yet most people rarely interact with chickens or know much about them. In Under the Henfluence, culture reporter Tove Danovich explores the lives of these quirky, mysterious birds who stole her heart the moment her first box of chicks arrived at the post office.

Charming and informative
Revisado: 12-19-23
We are just over a year into our lives with chickens and can’t believe the joy they bring. Our lives grow fuller as our flocks expand. We currently have 19 oops roosters that bring much of that joy. This book brings out the wonder we experience in watching, learning, and interacting with each of them. It touches on the pain of loss tenderly. It even brought me to tears a number of times. Thank you for this!

Historia
In the days before the Civil War, there lived in New Orleans the gens de couleur libre - copper-skinned half-castes, liberated by their "owners," but confined by their color to a life of political non-existence and social subordination. Here is a compelling and richly textured tale of a people forever caught in the shadows between black and white.

Abridged.

Terribly so. I’m not sure what the point is in abridging yet another of her tales. So much of the story lost.

Historia
In a sweeping saga of music and vengeance, the acclaimed author of The Vampire Chronicles draws listeners into 18th-century Italy, bringing to life the decadence beneath the shimmering surface of Venice, the wild frivolity of Naples, and the magnetic terror of its shadow, Vesuvius. This is the story of the castrati, the exquisite and otherworldly sopranos whose graceful bodies and glorious voices win the adulation of royal courts and grand opera houses throughout Europe. These men are revered as idols - and, at the same time, scorned for all they are not.

Not the book I remember
Revisado: 12-25-22
Only a little ways in and finding this audiobook nearly unrecognisable....even confusing. So much is missing in this apparently abridged version that I’m going to attempt to return it. Why rob a beautiful book of its inherent beauty?

Historia
London, July 1889. Eight months have passed since the horrific murder of Mary Jane Kelly. The residents of Whitechapel have begun breathing easy again - daring to leave windows open and walk about at twilight. But when old Alice McKenzie is found dead, throat slashed from ear to ear, the whispers begin once more: Jack the Ripper is back. Constance Piper, a flower seller with a psychic gift, was a friend to both women. With the supernatural help of her late mentor and her more grounded ally, police detective Thaddeus Hawkins, she uncovers links between the murders and a Fenian gang.

Constance narrator is difficult to listen to.
Revisado: 03-23-22
I went ahead and bought book 3 on audible even though book 2 is apparently not available. I’m only partway through chapter one and thinking about returning. The narrator for Constance has a cadence and inflection that feels like sentences. Are being spit at me. In parts. It’s jarring.
