I was given that warning and I’m so glad I followed that advice. The book is totally engaging and yes, has, a few good twists that you wait for right from the start. Enjoy.

Historia
For some, it’s the end of the world. For others, it’s just the beginning. With brilliant imagination, today’s most visionary writers point to the future in a collection curated by bestselling author Blake Crouch. These stories range from darkly comic to deeply chilling, but they all look forward. Featuring stories by Andy Weir, Amor Towles, Veronica Roth, N. K. Jemisin, Paul Tremblay, and Blake Crouch; with narration by Evan Rachel Wood, David Harbour, Jason Isaacs, Rosa Salazar, Steven Strait, and Janina Gavankar.

Two stories really stand out!
Revisado: 07-26-22
N.K. Jemisin’s Emergency Skin is brilliant —and as read by Jason Isaacs even more a treat.
The other standout story was The Last Conversation by Paul Tremblay. Poignant and especially interesting as it was published before the Covid Pandemic.
Both of these are full of delightful surprise.
Summer Frost by Blake Crouch also really grabbed my attention, though it’s themes reminded me of other stories, which I won’t give away here, but let’s just say Asimov might disagree with a few premises.
The weakest story was Amor Towles’ You Have Arrived at Your Destination, because it started out so strong and fascinating and then it went off the rails as the narrative completely changed and became confusing and bogged down in the main character’s thoughts. Too long!
The Andy Weir story, Randomize, would have been really interesting to me—if I understood the science more. Otherwise, if was reminiscent of fairy tales in which a clever character finds a loophole out of a tight situation.
The other story, Ark, by Veronica Roth was the most sentimental and had a genuine sweetness to it.
I think this collection is fairly well curated, though not all stories of equal quality.
The readers were all top notch. Particularly, Jason Issacs and his stunning humor!

In 1970s Baltimore, 14-year-old Mary Jane loves cooking with her mother, singing in her church choir, and enjoying her family’s subscription to the Broadway Showtunes of the Month record club. Shy, quiet, and bookish, she’s glad when she lands a summer job as a nanny for the daughter of a local doctor. A respectable job, Mary Jane’s mother says. In a respectable house.

This feels like a YA book.
Revisado: 07-22-22
I thought this was a very simplistic retro 70’s story with lots of thrown in references to such things as “avocado green refrigerator”. I really like coming of age stories—and some of the content was moving. My only issue with the reader was that she spoke lyrics to common popular songs rather than singing them—and it really detracted. I think a young adult with parental issues might get more out of this book than I did. My 68-year-old husband had read the print version and liked it more than I did. That was surprising…

Took me a while to realize this was a kid’s book… lol
Revisado: 07-06-22
I really love this author. Very good story-telling, with many aspects that make a for a solid teen mystery: A few good red-herrings and some close reliable friends.
For the most part I liked the narrator, but I really hated how he read the voices of female characters of all ages. They all sounded like shrieking old women, even the youngest of them. And they were inconsistent. It would have been stronger if he narrated without attempting character voices.

If only our world could learn from this one. I enjoyed the reader more when I sped play up just a tad. At first I thought it read like a kids book, but it’s just quirky and sweet—with a lot of kid characters. Daniel Henning does a great job with the various voice characterizations. I really loved it!

A real relationship, not just amazing fantasy sex.
Revisado: 12-16-20
The protagonist is more open-minded than naive, which makes it easy to identify with her. There is some mystery and some predictability, but no-holds-barred sexuality that is refreshing. Is it a Cinderella story? Well there are shoes involved and someone who needs to be found at the end... and that’s all I’m giving away. I liked it and enjoy the casual explanations of the BDSM scenes and the protagonists acceptance of her own enjoyment and self-discovery.

I never saw the movie and since we all know the first rule of Fight Club, you know I can’t tell you about it either. Great performance. Amazing writing.

Did not love the reader.
Revisado: 10-27-20
When Stephanie Willis is reading the main character who is a college-age woman, I felt a bit like I was listening to a YA book—akin to Twilight. Her voicing of the aliens and the older characters was much more believable. I do not think she did this book justice. The story is compelling, though a bit confusing at times. My son had read the book and recommended it to me, knowing I’m a fan of the genre., but I think I might have enjoyed reading it to myself a bit more.

Why hire a singer to read and then not have him sing?
Revisado: 10-14-20
Santino Fontana is a Tony Award winning actor and singer. As the title implies, this book is full of songs, so what a disappointment to have him straight-read song lyrics. There are traditional folk songs, like “Clementine” in the book, as well as original songs of which Is imagine Santino could have easily melodized. So that was disappointing. There were also sound mixing issues in this performance. You could tell when parts were edited or re-recorded because the sound was not mixed properly to blend. A bit jarring when suddenly a sentence is read as though it was recorded with a different sound system. This is something that should have been done in post-production and it happens throughout the book. I did enjoy the writing and Santino’s performance overall. I liked the third-person omniscient voice, which was a change from the original Hunger Games books. The book did a good job of keeping me guessing how the characters and relationships would develop.
