stellar story and reading
Revisado: 09-07-17
Disclaimer: I like John Scalzi's books, and I like the audible productions of them.
This is an off-beat story with some wild coincidences, but it's fun and has a terrific pace. Listening to it after many readings, I found some of the characters' arguments a little knowing - they propose hypotheticals with no evidence that they will be possible.
But Will's reading is spot on and it's a lot of fun.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a huge Holmesian, seven-foot-two tall, basketball's all-time leading scorer, and a US cultural ambassador. Anna Waterhouse is a professional screenwriter and script consultant.

A worthy addition
Revisado: 01-04-17
There's no shortage of Holmes material, but this Mycroft-centric tale is a good one. It doesn't steal from the established mythos, nor claim credit for things already covered elsewhere.
The characters are solid and the plot fits together well.

Historia
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives - meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him.

Revisado: 02-25-16
I've listened to this story a couple more times than either of the others, but it's only a little way out in front. They're good, gripping stories that are meticulously crafted.

The story is gripping and original - clear enough to make sense, but complex enough to make repeated listening worthwhile. The performance is outstanding in every way.

A fascinating and immersive story
Revisado: 02-05-16
I picked this book up knowing it was the second in a series, but that did not prove to be any obstacle to enjoying it. The background was filled in neatly without yards of tedious exposition and the story moved along at a good pace.
The reader does an excellent job with the various character voices, maintaining the differences and representing their physicality very well, but occasional it seemed as if he was reading the text for the first time at recording. This was not enough to prevent my enjoyment of the book, however, and I'll be looking for the third in the series.

I didn't expect to get this production, but it was excellent in every respect. The cast are stellar and the complex story I elegantly delivered via a series of letters. Great stuff.

Historia
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

The central character, Quentin, really needs a slap, but the scope of this story outweighs the irritation you'll feel with him. Great reading too.

Historia
An unabridged reading of the brand-new novelisation of a classic Fourth Doctor TV story by Douglas Adams. The Doctor takes Romana for a holiday in Paris - a city which, like a fine wine, has a bouquet all its own. But the TARDIS arrives in 1979, a table-wine year, whose vintage is soured by cracks in the very fabric of time itself.

Entertaining enough for me
Revisado: 07-20-15
Tom Baker was my first Doctor, and though this tale rambles a little it does feel like a Douglas Adams story (fitting, as the central concept evolved into the plot of Dirk Gently).

Historia
Ever since Martin Banks and his fellow computer geeks discovered that reality is just a computer program to be happily hacked, they've been jaunting back and forth through time, posing as medieval wizards and having the epic adventures that other nerds can only dream of having. But even in their wildest fantasies, they never expected to end up at the mercy of the former apprentice whom they sent to prison for gross misuse of magic and all-around evil behavior.
