As is typical of N. T. Wright's work, this book has a helpful discussion of Biblical teaching concerning the kingdom of God and Jesus as the one with "all authority in heaven and on earth."

However, also typical of Wright's work, in my opinion, the application of the Bible to social issues Is not as helpful. In this book the advocacy for a "liberal democracy" as the best form of government might be all right in a society which, overall, a Biblical view of virtue and reality is assumed by the vast majority. To whatever degree that has been so, it no longer is. Wright himself has pointed out elsewhere that, especially since the Enlightenment, such a view of reality no longer prevails.

Wright and Bird say, "We are contending that an ideal state has its freedoms and obligations tethered to something transcendent yet translatable" (p. 156 Kindle ed.). Charles Taylor has set forth powerfully the case that we now live in a "secularized" world. The reality of transcendence has effectively been lost in this secular age.

That moral and ethical framework grounded in transcendence has all but disappeared in the way government and politics work. In the U. S., at least, there is no reasonable expectation that we will soon return to a time when differences are allowed to co-exist peacefully — not in a society in which acceptance and approval are virtually synonymous.

Cramer has written a book that exposes roots of intergenerational conflict and yet offers hope because of the power of forgiveness. I highly recommend this book!

Alisa Childers faced head-on the hard questions about faith in God and the Bible. With diligence she sought out well-reasoned answers. Her book is well-written presenting scholarly topics clearly but not simplistically, accessible to those who are not scholars. Read or listen to this book!

Broken English is a gripping story about redemption, forgiveness, the trial of faith, and pacifism—not so much pacifism regarding the evils of war, but of the sort that refuses to take vengeance. It is a book about friendship and trust strained near to the breaking point.

I love P. L. Gaus's Amish Country books—all of them! I have print copies of all 9 of them and the audio versions of the 8 available. I have listened to most more than once. Gaus writes great stories, most centered around a college professor, a pastor, and a sheriff who have been friends since childhood. The characters of these men and others in the books are well drawn. Beyond the literary quality, there is great insight into the faith, life, and culture of The Amish people. In many ways these books are like sociological studies set inside powerful stories.

I only wish "The Names of Our Tears" was also available in audio.

Wright opens the good news in the gospel in a way that most contemporary Bible readers have not understood it.

Smith challenges the way many of us "evangelicals" approach being and making disciples. He shows that we have overemphasized getting knowledge and have severely underemphasized developing new habits as disciples. Just as eating certain foods regularly tends to make us desire those foods, so the things habits by which we live strengthen what we want and need. What are the habits that characterize "the way of the Lord"? How do we practice "putting on Christ" so that we are more and more "conformed to the image of God's Son"?
