Historia
1867, Richmond, Virginia: Though she wears the same low-cut purple gown that is the uniform of all the girls who work at Worsham's gambling parlor, Arabella stands apart. It's not merely her statuesque beauty and practiced charm. Even at seventeen, Arabella possesses an unyielding grit, and a resolve to escape her background of struggle and poverty. Collis Huntington, railroad baron and self-made multimillionaire, is drawn to Arabella from their first meeting. Collis is married and 30 years her senior, yet they are well-matched in temperament, and flirtation rapidly escalates into an affair.

Not enthralled with the narrator. Something about the changing voice inflection were a bit annoying, but glad I stuck it out and enjoyed the story to the end.

Historia
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Very sad account of how we obtain the rare metals we are now so dependent upon. Makes me wonder how much all of our electronic paraphernalia would really cost if the folks in the Congo received proper pay, accommodations, everything associated with a value of what they are doing. Sobering read.

This explosive new audiobook challenges many of the long-held assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans and Nazis, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on the trendy intellectuals of our times as well as historic interpreters of American life.

Historia
In the 17th and 18th centuries, more than 300,000 white people were shipped to America as slaves. Urchins were swept up from London's streets to labor in the tobacco fields, where life expectancy was no more than two years. Brothels were raided to provide "breeders" for Virginia. Hopeful migrants were duped into signing as indentured servants, unaware they would become personal property who could be bought, sold, and even gambled away. Transported convicts were paraded for sale like livestock.

This should be required reading, right next to the 1619 project. Neither should be given more weight. There is much more to the story of black & white slavery then most people know and, sadly, many will not acknowledge. Listen to this and become informed.

History of Chinese slavery
Revisado: 11-27-23
History of the paper daughters or Chinese women who were transported under false pretenses from china to the West Coast, and sold as prostitutes mostly in San Francisco. Although presented as a novel, the dates and times are well documented historically and references included at end of book. Not the best writing but nevertheless a time of oppression somewhat overlooked in wake of other prejudicial events taking front and center stage and worth a read!
