Historia
When Muslim fundamentalists blow up a key Soviet oil complex, making an already critical oil shortage calamitous, the Russians figure they are going to have to take things into their own hands. They plan to seize the Persian Gulf, and more ambitiously, to neutralize NATO. Thus begins Red Storm, an audacious gamble that uses diplomatic maneuver to cloak a crash military build-up.

A personal all-time favorite
Revisado: 09-08-18
As a 60's/70's tin can sailor, this was a favorite read/listen right at the getgo - 1986. I just listened to it again (2018) and it's still my all-time favorite. The narrator is "ace" in my book, and the story hits many chords. One reviewer above calls this book "alternative" history, but it's still very relevant today, and, sadly, could still be "future history" with but little change to technology. Very long book, but HIGHLY recommended.
I wonder how the Edwards' kids turned out?

Historia
Danny North is the first Gate Mage to be born on Earth in nearly 2,000 years, or at least the first to survive and claim his power, for families of Westil in exile on Earth have a treaty that requires the death of any suspected Gate Mage. The wars between the families had been terrible until at last they realized it was their own survival in question. But a Gate Mage, one who could build a Great Gate back to Westil, would give his own family a terrible advantage over all the others and reignite the wars. So it was decided that they all had to die.

Any additional comments?
This series had a great premise and promise, and got off to a good start, but tailed off in book two, and in this book, the direction is lost and the story just wanders off into the sunset. Maybe next time. I like Card, though, and will try again.

Historia
Here on Earth, Danny North is still in high school, yet he holds in his heart and mind all the stolen outselves of 13 centuries of gatemages. The Families still want to kill him if they can’t control him - and they can’t control him; he is far too powerful. On Westil, Wad is now nearly powerless - he lost everything to Danny in their struggle. Even if he can survive the revenge of his enemies, he must still somehow make peace with the Gatemage Daniel North, for when Danny took that power from Loki, he also took responsibility for the Great Gates.

Still a very good series, and I will continue the series to book three, but the story has passed it's climax. This book seems to lose steam, although it's still sailing along, going somewhere.

Historia
Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different - and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an "outself"....

Historia
Empires of the Sea tells the story of the 50-year world war between Islam and Christianity for the Mediterranean: one of the fiercest and most influential contests in European history. It traces events from the appearance on the world stage of Suleiman the Magnificent through "the years of devastation" when it seemed possible that Islam might master the whole sea, to the final brief flourishing of a united Christendom in 1571.

I sure wish this book had been available when I visited Malta with the USS Joseph P Kennedy, Jr, DD-850, back in the late sixties/early seventies. It would have been super to tour some of these battle sites. Alas.

A first novel?
Revisado: 10-29-16
Would you try another book from Vaughn Heppner and/or David Stifel?
Might. It has to get better than this.
What was most disappointing about Vaughn Heppner’s story?
Very amateurish writing. Wss this a college composition class assignment?
Which character – as performed by David Stifel – was your favorite?
None
Do you think The Lost Starship needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No. I think all the damage that can be done on this unoriginal premise has been done.
Any additional comments?
Not bad enough to get a refund, but close. Skip this book and move on.

Historia
Surigao Strait in the Philippine Islands was the scene of a major battleship duel during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Because the battle was fought at night and had few survivors on the Japanese side, the events of that naval engagement have been passed down in garbled accounts. Anthony P. Tully pulls together all of the existing documentary material, including newly discovered accounts and a careful analysis of U.S. Navy action reports, to create a new and more detailed description of the action.

Ba-a-a-a-a-d narration!
Revisado: 01-30-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Book has many pieces of data I haven't heard before. Very interesting.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Yes! Unfortunately, Mr. Roelofs is NOT qualified to narrate this book. Pronunciations are execrable - forecastle instead of foc'sl, for instance - and names and places are awful. Would it be too much to find pronunciation of important geographic names? Or how to read a compass heading? Or "naval time" conventions?
Was Battle of Surigao Strait worth the listening time?
Barely, but the narration almost makes the answer to this question "NO".
