Historia
From 1783, when German immigrant John Jacob Astor first arrived in the United States, until 2009, when Brooke Astor’s son, Anthony Marshall, was convicted of defrauding his elderly mother, the Astor name occupied a unique place in American society. The family fortune, first made by a beaver trapping business that grew into an empire, was then amplified by holdings in Manhattan real estate. Over the ensuing generations, Astors ruled Gilded Age New York society and inserted themselves into political and cultural life, but also suffered the most famous loss on the Titanic.

History I never knew. Loved it
Revisado: 01-17-25
I'm a history buff, so I thoroughly enjoyed this, Not being from New York I had no idea the part that the Astor family played in NY history. So glad I listened. Thank you for putting this book, research and story together.. Anderson's narration is the icing on the cake. I think I have listened to every book He has narrated.

Historia
Christmas comes early—far too early—to McCredie’s little Old Town bookshop in Edinburgh. It’s summer, but an American production company has decided that McCredie’s is the perfect location to film a very cheesy Christmas movie. After all, who can resist the charmingly narrow historic street with its Victorian grey stone buildings and warmly lit shop windows? Carmen Hogan, the bookshop’s manager, is amused and a bit horrified by the goings-on, but the money the studio is paying is too good to pass up.

Difficult to complete.
Revisado: 01-12-25
I enjoyed the concept of the book shop at Christmas and midnight, Mr. McCready and the other shopkeepers, however Carmen never seemed to mature mentally or emotionally) and she was jealous of others who had things she didn't. I believed she had potential but she didn't move forward. She could be thoughtful but also iritating.
I cannot believe her perfect sister, the lawyer,, hired a male nanny. He had no class, or sense of propriety. It felt creepy whenever he was a part of the story.
The book was just not giving me feel good vibes or a sense of progress.

Historia
Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life, does not appeal. Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there, either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

A Must Read
Revisado: 01-20-24
A very good read from a passionate, educated and articulate congresswoman.
I learned so much about the subject matter that you don't hear about on the news.
I pray that Trumps reign of terror does not emerge again. He is a very dangerous man and a danger to our way of life.
He cannot be allowed anywhere near our democracy again. He is a dictator too close for comfort.
There are honorable people in the world and Liz Cheney knew she was committing political suicide when she stood up to Trump and his henchmen. She will lose an election but they will go down in history with disgrace.
Thank you Liz Chaney and others for your courage.

Great Storyteller-Memoir
Revisado: 11-26-23
Great Storyteller-Memoir of a new vet in farming community 1937. James Herriotts recollection of his boss, travels, clients, farmers and animals is unique, funny, and honest. His story also educates the reader on the common maladies of farm and domestic animals as well as their owners. I very much enjoyed listening as the narrator took me on a journey through the farmlands, mud, pubs, and small community.

Historia
In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

I Couldnt Put it Down
Revisado: 09-10-23
The movie was good. The book is better. Twist and turns. I knew it was bad, but I didnt realize how deep the segregation ran in early 60's Jackson, Mississippi. Sad and funny. captures the human spirit, fear, love, kinship, and neighbors. Peek inside the human heart and hear the voices of blacks and whites. Good and bad. Love and hate. Highly recommend.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 06-17-23
This story although enjoyable did not have the same storytelling style and ability as I expected from Ms. Flagg. (Fried Green Tomatoes). It seemed as though much of the content was a rehash of the original story but I loved hearing how the characters moved forward and the twist at the end
