Historia
Minor Detail begins during the summer of 1949, one year after the war that the Palestinians mourn as the Nakba - the catastrophe that led to the displacement and exile of some 700,000 people - and the Israelis celebrate as the War of Independence. Israeli soldiers murder an encampment of Bedouin in the Negev desert, and among their victims, they capture a Palestinian teenager, and they rape her, kill her, and bury her in the sand. Many years later, in the near-present day, a young woman in Ramallah tries to uncover some of the details surrounding this particular rape and murder.

Well paced and well written.
Revisado: 07-17-24
Novel with two part structure, part one written in a close third, the other in first person. A venomous insect bite creates a lingering dread and urgency in part one. The second part is fueled by the overactive mind of a Palestinian woman who sets off on a poetic/quixotic mission to learn about a killing alluded to in part one.
I’m not giving anything away, but you should give this brief, tightly paced novel a shot.

Matsutake is the most valuable mushroom in the world - and a weed that grows in human-disturbed forests across the northern hemisphere. Through its ability to nurture trees, matsutake helps forests to grow in daunting places. It is also an edible delicacy in Japan, where it sometimes commands astronomical prices. In all its contradictions, matsutake offers insights into areas far beyond just mushrooms and addresses a crucial question: what manages to live in the ruins we have made?

Inventive approach to social anthropology and alternative economies through the lens of a rare-ish mushroom
Revisado: 04-02-24
I’ve never read anything quite like it. It took several chapters of “suspension of disbelief” before getting into the author’s approach to the subject. Not for everyone but rewards those who meander with it. Narrator of the is mediocre and has an irritating schoolmarmish mode of delivery. Ditched the audiobook with 90 minutes to go and read the remainder of the book in paperback form to better enjoy the author’s voice.

Stillwater College in Virginia, 1966. Historia
A group of travellers chance to meet, first in a castle, then a tavern. Their powers of speech are magically taken from them and instead they have only tarot cards with which to tell their stories. What follows is an exquisite interlinking of narratives, and a fantastic, surreal, and chaotic history of all human consciousness.

Uneven but worth listening to if you like Calvino
Revisado: 02-21-24
An intriguing technical challenge set by a master but execution is muddled. The work is divided into two parts, each leveraging the archetypes of Tarot cards as narrative building blocks. The eponymous first section, though a bit mechanical at times, is more successful than the second section ‘The Tavern of Crossed Destinies’ which becomes repetitive and unfocused. The author’s note at the end of the book helps to explain the root of this imbalance and Calvino’s method in structuring this text; his note leaves the reader with some empathy toward the flawed result.
TLDR: this shouldn’t be the first Calvino book you read but it’s not terrible. Would recommend for Tarot enthusiasts, maybe.

Historia
In 1950, a young doctor called Norton Perina signs on with the anthropologist Paul Tallent for an expedition to the remote Micronesian island of Ivu'ivu in search of a rumored lost tribe. They succeed, finding not only that tribe but also a group of forest dwellers they dub "The Dreamers", who turn out to be fantastically long-lived but progressively more senile. Perina suspects the source of their longevity is a hard-to-find turtle; unable to resist the possibility of eternal life, he kills one and smuggles some meat back to the States.

Historia
Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

Historia
In the Shadow of the American Dream is a stunning collection of riveting and revealing chapters from Wojnarowicz's extensive personal diaries - 30 volumes' worth of memories and lucid observations, some bitter, some sweet - that the author began writing when he was 17 and continued until his death two decades later. Here is a brilliant chronicle of an artist's emergence - a young man's still achingly fresh memories of his unhappy adolescence and his glorious discovery of self.

Historia
In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining.

Eduardo Ballerini has a great voice, Tarantino narrates the opening and closing chapters. I’m not the world’s biggest Tarantino fan but found this listen to be worthwhile nonetheless.

Historia
David Wojnarowicz was an abused child, a teen runaway who barely finished high school, but he emerged as one of the most important voices of his generation. His circle of East Village artists moved into the national spotlight just as the AIDS plague began its devastating advance, and as right-wing culture warriors reared their heads. Fire in the Belly is the untold story of a polarizing figure at a pivotal moment in American culture - and one of the most highly acclaimed biographies of the year.

Wrong narrator, sounds like a 2nd grade phonics teacher
Revisado: 05-26-23
Fantastic biography. Truly. Blew through this 600p tome in 4 days thanks to Carr’s expert cadence and firsthand experience of the events.
The narrator is completely wrong for the topic. Multiple, head-scratching mispronunciations distract from an otherwise heavy hitting work. Narrator routinely bungles Carr’s spare, purposeful sentences depicting the AIDS crisis with the song-song vapidity of a second grade phonics teacher.
