definitely the weakest in the series

after enjoying nearly every single book in the series rating it from 4 to 5 stars, I couldn't for the life of me get into this one. not a single joke was funny. The story was completely uninteresting. I'm sorry to say felt robotic. it's as if you fed an AI the entirety of the series thus far and asked it to write the next book. I think I'm done with the series after this. there's no coming back from a stinker like this.

But the time you get to the fourth book you start to realize that your confusion is intentional just enjoy the humor and everything will tie up nicely at the end. love this series.

actually funny sci-fi/fantasy/horror

the story is actually quite good, and the dialogue is funny. one issue is that there is some sort of frantic action scene every few pages involving various monsters and impossible things that sort of devalues them. I don't think I've ever said this before but I could do with just a bit less crazy sh*t happening :) but the laser Jesus was a nice take ondeus ex machina

this is a romance novel for 13 year old girls.

I guess it's on me that I didn't do my research. just saw "hey, a fantasy series with really good ratings." I'm actually a fan of ultracheese and badly written will they won't they relationship drivel. I am not what you might call a high brow consumer. but even I have my limits.

the last quarter of the book is one of the most terrifying nightmares I've ever heard. for once I'm glad time travel is impossible.

if you're reading the review for this book you've read the previous ones. I was questioning the direction of the series with Iron Gold. But now, with two protagonists, one on each side of the war, it's taking on a wonderful GOT quality. and I mean that in a good way.

I love Stephenson. I've read all his books including Reamde and Cryptonomicon. also some callbacks to Snow Crash with the descriptions of a dystopian future Bible belt. If the book ended at the half way point I would have given it 5 stars. he should have taken another year and thought up a way to tell the 2nd half of the story in a more compelling way. The world building was executed perfectly. The conflict set up wonderfully. But at some point half way through he starts setting up a whole new quest and a whole new cast of characters, some of which are actually the same characters?? Makes it hard to both keep track and care about them. The first half is so fantastic. I'm disappointed. the second half is basically a Word of Warcraft campaign. It's like having somebody describe a dream. It's impossible to care.
