LOVE the narrator
Revisado: 02-04-25
I have this audio done with two previous narrators, and I bought the second audio narratored by Rosamond (the actress from the series) and she is MUCH MUCH better.
I have seen only two episodes of the series and am now going to listen to the book collection before continuing. That is if Rosamond narrates the rest of the collection.

horrible narrator/reader~Michael Kramer
Revisado: 05-14-24
I purchased the prequel "New Spring" that had Michael Kramer & Kate Reading. Having the alternating readers/narrators was SOO MUCH BETTER.
The male reader/narrator MUST be replaced!!
Mr
Kramer simply isn't able to convey separate emotions & give distinct voice/s to other characters.
He simply should have read the book. Mr. Kramer is NOT a narrator.
Mr. Kramer also participated in the prequel "New Spring"; BUT he thankfully his part was MUCH smaller, so his reading/failed narration was easier to gloss over & move over to Kate Reading's wonderful performance.
At this point, I have lost interest in the audio form of the series.
Perhaps I'll check into the kindle version with the "talk-back" feature.

Historia
Cyrus Spitama, grandson of the prophet Zoroaster and lifelong friend of Xerxes, spent most of his life as Persian ambassador for the great king Darius. He traveled to India, where he discussed nirvana with Buddha, and to the warring states of Cathay, where he learned of Tao from Master Li and fished on the riverbank with Confucius. Now blind and aged in Athens - the Athens of Pericles, Sophocles, Thucydides, Herodotus, and Socrates - Cyrus recounts his days as he strives to resolve the fundamental questions that have guided his life’s journeys.

This book is PHENOMENAL.
there. That's all that needs to be said. LoL
I CONSUMED this book from the first paragraph!
My literary tastes are VERY eclectic (from "Dune" to the original "three musketeers" series, and back to the history book "becoming Queen Victoria").
Books that are TRULY worth reading (& now worth listening to) are those that leave the page behind. Leave EVERYTHING in distant memory.
Perhaps as a writer I expect "more" from a book/story. If I'm unable to visualize & immerse in the story, the writer has failed.
Vidal opened the ancient world & the reader falls into it. You are submerged. The different societies, conflicts, historical figures, & description leave you blinking & wondering...."what?!? That's the end???"
The narrator is.. perfectly suited! Normally British narrators (NOT readers, folks need to bring the written word to life) are my preference. This talented gentleman draws you deeper into the extraordinary world Vidal created.
¤☆☆☆BEWARE☆☆☆
There are scenes that mention young child exploitation.
There is a graphic sexual beastal science.

I REALLY wanted to like...even LOVE this book & series.
Not EVER going to happen! The writing is barely high-schoolish (at best!).
The writer lacks the ability to LIVE the world and persons he is writing. That is ALL that is here. A person writing. No passion, no breathing life onto the words he has put on the page.
The poor quality of the story is compounded a MILLION FOLD with two of the WORST

It's been a year since Eragon departed Alagaësia in search of the perfect home to train a new generation of Dragon Riders. Now, he is struggling with an endless sea of tasks: constructing a vast dragonhold, wrangling with suppliers, guarding dragon eggs, and dealing with belligerent Urgals and haughty elves. Then a vision from the Eldunarí, unexpected visitors, and an exciting Urgal legend offer a much-needed distraction and a new perspective. This volume features three original stories set in Alagaësia, interspersed with scenes from Eragon's own unfolding adventure.

I bought this hoping it would be the story of Angela.
I understand that his sister wrote the content concerning Angela, you can tell. His sister is NOT a writer. To expect readers to purchase work from the ORIGINAL writer, and then slide in works from another person...yeah...DON'T.

AMAZINGLY well written!!
I LOVE this specific time of Roman history. There are few that accurately cover it (Turney and Kane are two wonderful writers also), and even less that take a REAL man's life and bring it life. This exceptional author does it in effortless form.
Jason Saxon is the PERFECT narrator for this story. His rich resounding voice carries the listener with him. Just LOVE his voice, and elocution!!

Scipio Africanus (236-183 BC) was one of the most exciting and dynamic leaders in history. As commander, he never lost a battle. Yet it is his adversary, Hannibal, who has lived on in public memory. As B. H. Liddell Hart writes, "Scipio's battles are richer in stratagems and ruses - many still feasible today - than those of any other commander in history." Any military enthusiast or historian will find this to be an absorbing, gripping portrait.

Revisado: 11-23-23
I have looked LITERALLY for YEARS on this AMAZING military genius and, found NOTHING, but footnotes.
This man KNEW, UNDERSTOOD, & IMPLEMENTED the GREATEST military fetes younger than Alexander the Great. Yet, Hannibal Barack overshadowed him.
The greedy senators of his time ridiculed, deemed, & hounded this inspired general for the wealth of Carthage & for power.
His mental intellect and application still, has no match even to this date.

Greatest modern retelling of Marius from actual Sertorius Scrolls
Revisado: 05-22-23
I am an AVID ancient Roman history buff.
From whence I first read/heard of the phenomenal persona that is Marius, I wanted MORE!!
There are but two writers (I have personally read/audiobook) that obliquely mentioned and/or referred to Marius.
Literally YEARS I constantly used "search" for Marius.
*HEAVENLY ANGELES SINGING*
I giddily FINALLY found "Sertorius Scrolls".
This is a piece of Ancient Roman history that is glossed over with often nothing more than a couple of sentences and at most, a paragraph.
This exceptional writer has taken on this most exciting and interesting time in Roman history and placed it in "can't wait for the next chapter, book" of this legendary hero to come to us from antiquity.
The narrator adds a dimension to the writer that brings the story into 3D perception with his sonorous baritone that grips and holds
