Historia
Restless, ambitious Ilyas was stolen from his parents by the Schutzruppe askari, the German colonial troops; after years away, he returns to his village to find his parents gone and his sister, Afiya, given away. Hamza was not stolen but was sold; he has come of age in the army, at the right hand of an officer whose control has ensured his protection but marked him for life. Hamza does not have words for how the war ended for him. Returning to the town of his childhood, all he wants is work, however humble and security - and the beautiful Afiya.

A Very Human Story
Revisado: 11-25-21
This was an interesting book and mirrors to a significant extent the feelings of powerlessness we experience living under colonial rule. Decisions made elsewhere influenced how we perceived the world and the fates we endured.

Engrossing!
Revisado: 07-13-20
It is a very human novel bringing together some of the things that many of us can relate to: friendship, family conflicts and the generational changes that make life so very interesting.

Historia
Yeongdo, Korea - 1911. In a small fishing village on the banks of the East Sea, a club-footed, cleft-lipped man marries a 15-year-old girl. The couple have one child: their beloved daughter, Sunja. When Sunja falls pregnant by a married yakuza, the family face ruin. But then, Isak, a Christian minister, offers her a chance of salvation: a new life in Japan as his wife. Following a man she barely knows to a hostile country in which she has no friends and no home, and whose language she cannot speak, Sunja's salvation is just the beginning of her story.

Hopeful and Despairing!
Revisado: 09-01-19
The novel reflects the resilience of the human spirit and of the role of family to sustain the individual person. I almost stopped reading after Noah's suicide but life goes on. We navigate life despite the evil and bigotry that surrounds us because there is also decency and compassion even if it is limited to our small circles.

Historia
Three sisters and a brother meet up in their grandparents' old house for three long, hot summer weeks. The house is full of memories of their childhood and their past, but now they may have to sell it. And under the idyllic surface, there are tensions. Secrets are uncovered, and passions erupt as a way of life - bourgeois, literate, ritualised - winds down to its inevitable end.

Thoroughly believable!
Revisado: 06-02-19
The book gradually grew on me, drawing me in slowly. The characters and their idiosyncrasies seem thoroughly believable, as if the could belong in any family. I can relate. It's uncanny.

Historia
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle, and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes 'interesting'. The last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is the story of inaction with enormous consequences.

Supremely entertaining!
Revisado: 12-23-18
This book allowed me to understand the trials and tribulations of being a woman in a conflicted corner of the world in a difficult period. But I am sure that a lot of it holds true for any place and any time. And, we get a peek of the toll of the conflict to daily existence, without sermonizing or without the sheen of ideology. I am happy to have gotten the chance to listen to the book. The reader is amazing.

Historia
The Devil comes to Moscow, but he isn't all bad; Pontius Pilate sentences a charismatic leader to his death, but yearns for redemption; and a writer tries to destroy his greatest tale, but discovers that manuscripts don't burn. Multi-layered and entrancing, blending sharp satire with glorious fantasy, The Master and Margarita is ceaselessly inventive and profoundly moving. In its imaginative freedom and raising of eternal human concerns, it is one of the world's great novels.

Humanity is ubiquitous.
Revisado: 03-18-17
The narrator captured for me the feelings of the persons caught up in this fantastical tale. Even in extraordinary circumstances, the characters cannot escape those traits that make us all human. I haven't had so much fun with a book in such a long time.
