Authentic dialogue and great humour
Revisado: 12-15-24
Authentic dialogue well performed by the narrator. Really humorous parts particularly the family dynamics. Realistic female protagonist with an interesting personality. An engaging story and great listen.

Historia
Max Rupert has left his position as a Minneapolis homicide detective to live in solitude. Mourning the tragic death of his wife, he's also racked by guilt—he alone knows what happened to her killer. But then the former local sheriff, Lyle Voight, arrives with a desperate plea: Lyle’s daughter Sandy and his six-year-old grandson Pip have disappeared. Lyle’s certain Sandy's ex-husband Reed is behind it, but the new sheriff is refusing to investigate. When Max reluctantly looks into their disappearance, he too becomes convinced something has gone very wrong.

Captivating adventure, romance a little cheesy
Revisado: 09-16-23
Great characters, not black and white. Interesting mystery and great adventure. Although the romantic tension between the two detectives was tantalising, Max's old fashioned protectiveness seemed out of place. A little too noble and cliche for me. Might just be my taste in men though! I would definitely read the next adventure with Max.

Historia
Charlie Garner has a bad feeling. His ex-wife, Meg, has been missing for over a week and one quick peek into her home shows all her possessions packed up in boxes. Neighbors claim she’s running from bill collectors, but Charlie suspects something more sinister is afoot. Meg was last seen working at the local donut shop, a business run by a shadow group most refer to as ‘The Saucer People’; a space-age, evangelist cult who believe their compound to be the site of an extraterrestrial Second Coming.

Performance production poor.
Revisado: 05-07-23
The story was cute, pretty light and the characters didn’t have a huge amount of depth. A little too cutesy for my taste. I prefer some of his other writing. The sound production was quite awful, each character was obviously in a separate room. Some definitely sounded as though they were reading from a script, too much intonation and slightly stilted. Unfortunately due to the poor performance quality it was too easy to stop believing in the magic of the story. I just ended up wincing inside at the awkwardness of it. Some of the voice actors were great, such as who ever was Grover and the new Sherif, beautiful purring tones, made for audio. Overall it was entertaining but I felt let down and wish I hadn’t spent my credit on this particular book of J.R.Lansdales.

Historia
It is 1872, and a series of gruesome murders is the talk of London. Mycroft Holmes - now 26 and a force to be reckoned with at the War Office - has no interest in the killings; however his brother Sherlock has developed a distasteful fascination for the macabre to the detriment of his studies, much to Mycroft's frustration. When a ship carrying cargo belonging to Mycroft's best friend Cyrus Douglas runs aground, Mycroft persuades Sherlock to serve as a tutor at the orphanage that Douglas runs as a charity, so that Douglas might travel to see what can be salvaged.

Wonderful
Revisado: 02-03-23
Beautifully written and exquisitely performed. Lovely to hear words so infrequently used these days. A stark contrast to modern communication. Lol.

Living and slaving in Fill City One, you get used to the smell. We call it the Everpresent Stink. But every once in a while, on a spring day with a breeze, it clears away enough to remind us that there is something more out there. Most Fillers' wildest dreams would be just to get past the walls and live in the mainland. But my dream? It’s a little bigger. I’m going to Mars.

Too cutesy for me
Revisado: 01-08-19
I got the impression from the editors pick that this was an adult sci-fi.
It would be a great story for a teenager or young adult depending on maturity. There are always happy endings, the female protagonist makes it. She finds love, fame, fortune, family and friendship. Each chapter ending feels like it should be the end of the novel but it keeps on going. I was glad to finally finish it. Cute story but too cutesy for me.
