a breath of fresh air for litg genre
Revisado: 12-20-24
Loving the character building in this one - not the BS stat building that is too predominant in most litg books. It's important to get to know the people and this book finally accomplished it. I really hope it doesn't go back to unending dry stat building. I barely got this one because of too much of that in 2 and 3. So thankful that I did.
I know there's a lot of unread books ahead of me, and someone who chooses to call themselves Shirtaloon can hardly want to be considered a literary genius, however! Thank you shirtaloon for this book. It certainly gave me the faith needed to continue the series now that I understand what you're capable of.

Historia
After moving from a small country town to Seattle, Heather Baxter marries Tom, a widowed doctor with a young son and teenage daughter. A working vacation overseas seems like the perfect way to bring the new family together, but once they’re deep in the Australian outback, the jet-lagged and exhausted kids are so over their new mom. When they discover remote Dutch Island, off-limits to outside visitors, the family talks their way onto the ferry. But as soon as they set foot on the island, which is run by a tightly knit clan of locals, everything feels wrong.

I'm a big fan of Adrian McKinty. I've listened to all his books on Audible and there's not a single whiff. I didn't want to stop listening to this one and got into some trouble from ghosting my wife because of it. Narrator does a great job too.

Historia
My name’s Bill Ryder and, oddly enough, my lack of heartbeat is probably the least concerning thing in my life. My witch girlfriend has been marked for death by a vampire temptress who wants me for herself. With both sides spoiling for a fight, the chances of them talking out their problems over lunch are slim. While I’d love to help smooth things over, I’ve been way too distracted dealing with evil leprechauns and redneck werewolves.

This guy actually produces entertaining material in a prolific manner! Thanks Rick! As a metalhead myself, I only wish you had characters that were as well and mentioned bands and music they were listening too - only critique. I seriously love on this author. His stories in Shingles are usually the best ones in the collection too.
This was a fantastic addition to Bill the Vampire / Bill of the Dead series, and I love the way that it is only part one of the next book. I just downloaded it and am looking forward to listening. Rick Gualtieri is a Rockstar!
Christopher John Fetherolf really continues to make Bill and friends enjoyable. Despite his annoyingly mispronounced words like violla - which recent updates have fixed and then blocked my access to ownership of previously owned versions, thanks to Audible CS for rectifying the issue without a struggle! - he is the only voice of Bill that I'd ever be able to acknowledge.

When a fiendish fraudster has been fomenting financial falsehoods, who can find the finagler? The World’s Greatest Detective Agency, of course! Staffed by the eccentric man who calls himself Sherman Holmes and aided by his ever-composed assistant Watson, the duo will take on cases other agencies might consider helpless, hopeless, or downright preposterous. Which is how our fearless fellows find themselves investigating a Renaissance faire’s cooked books, with the finger of guilt pointing directly at their client.

It’s hard to be a drunken idiot when the world keeps burning down around you. Cairn, the charming-yet-utterly-irresponsible heir to the Uskarrion throne, is all too happy to toss the crown aside. But an invasion, conspiracy, and rise of a terrifying villain result in his untimely death. Then, Cairn reawakens. It's a decade earlier, and he's in his childhood body. But he remembers everything...there's much to accomplish. First, however, he'd really love to stop himself from dying.

Revisado: 09-28-23
A tiny bit hard to follow at the beginning, but I fell right into it. A great story! I just purchased the second book with some pretty high expectations. Fingers crossed.
Luke Daniels was great as always, but I got to hear a lot more voices from him than usual. His blooper reel at the end totally cracked me up too.

Serious topics with a lot of great jokes and references that landed well for me. I thought it was great and already bought the next in line. Intelligently written to a surprising level for a joke-choked story. Fast-moving, but I still managed to feel some characters. Would definitely recommend.

Imagine going to bed with mousy brown locks and waking up with a headful of supernova scarlet. It's a hot new look for me - literally, because it bursts into flames whenever I'm threatened. My magical makeover is all Gary's fault. I knew there was something off from the moment he transferred to my school. Go figure. He's a wizard with a trust fund and an inferiority complex. Now, thanks to him, I've graduated from high school bullies to supernatural terrors and that's not all. Fate has chosen me to face the legendary vampire destined to destroy the world.

Outshined expectations. Very good.
Revisado: 05-13-23
I'm SO glad I finally ignored the negative reviews and just got this. Already a big Bill the Vamp fan (of course) and love Rick's short stories in the Shingles. He doesn't disappoint here either. I'm not sure how/why this guy likes to write from the POV of a teenage girl, but he strangely pulls it off in a surprisingly entertaining way. Way to go Rick! Honestly, I see this one is co-written, but I'm unfamiliar with R.E. Carr. I wonder how much of this is her and how much is Rick.
Voice actor was good too. Pretty much a perfect choice for the book.

Historia
The goblin invasion is on...and a wizard's work is never done! After facing a hopeless siege, an implacable foe, and an impossible escape, you would think that Minalan the Spellmonger would be able to rest - but the armies of the undead goblin shaman Shereul (known as the Dead God to his human victims) are rolling over the Western reaches of the rustic Duchy of Alshar and is headed toward the heart of the Duchy of Castal. Thousands are fleeing for their lives as hordes of goblins pour out of Boval Vale and devastate the rugged fiefs of the Alshari Wilderlands.

Fantastic sequel!
Revisado: 05-13-23
John Lee is really great! He especially shines in this first-person POV.
The main character is sort of an asshole, but totally relatable. More relatable than the "aw shucks" too good of a good guy that is normally thrust upon us. The story continues to unfold in a way that makes it hard to put down. With most of the focus on the protagonist, there's a little less character depth than I'd like for the others, but I still barely feel the lack. A good sequel, and the so is the next one!
