Disappointing
Revisado: 02-13-19
The rave reviews confused me. There are certainly moments in the story that are erotic enough to stir the, um, soul. But the story is so far beyond credibility to be rather foolish. Characters were one dimensional. The reader's foreign accent was annoying and often inept. For me personally, D/s with male submissive is a turn off, but that's just me, not a global critique. I admit that I fell asleep listening and never did hear the last parts. I plan to return this one.

Great character development here, and suspense built towards the end to a surprise conclusion. Cinematic.

When you listen to this audiobook, you will make many assumptions. You will assume you are listening to a story about a jealous ex-wife. You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement - a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love. You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle. Assume nothing. Twisted and deliciously chilling, The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage - and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

Rich powerful man, pathetic women
Revisado: 01-15-18
What would have made The Wife Between Us better?
I'm sure this title will appeal to lots of females, but ugh! So sick of women swept off their feet by rich and powerful professional man. Yuck.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Back to mysteries that aren't so cheesy. Maybe Dave Robichaux series.
What does Julia Whelan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Nothing.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Easy to fall asleep while listening.
Any additional comments?
Gonna return this one for a credit.

Meaningless lives
Revisado: 12-19-17
I didn’t expect great literature, just an easy entertaining read. The performances were a bit annoying, especially “Claire’s” whiny drawl. The story was so uninteresting, it took me weeks to slog through, kept putting it aside. My expectations were low, and that was about right.

Looking for some fresh inspiration, but found that I wasn't stirred. I'm sure the author is just pacing herself, setting a foundation of characters and structure for future story lines. I would have enjoyed more of a tease.

Historia
From bestselling author Anne Rice, writing as A.N. Roquleaure. In the traditional folktale of 'Sleeping Beauty,' the spell cast upon the lovely young princess and everyone in her castle can only be broken by the kiss of a Prince. It is an ancient story, one that originally emerged from and still deeply disturbs the mind's unconscious. Now Anne Rice's retelling of the Beauty story probes the unspoken implications of this lush, suggestive tale by exploring its undeniable connection to sexual desire. Here the Prince reawakens Beauty, not with a kiss, but with sexual initiation.

A good start, fell flat
Revisado: 08-07-15
What did you love best about The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty?
Anne Rice is intriguing in her genre of titillating lit -- this started out strong, but when Prince got home to Mommy he suddenly lost his mojo? The rest of the tale lacked juice.
Would you be willing to try another book from Anne Rice? Why or why not?
Possibly -- I've tried others, they have some appeal, but are unnecessarily lengthy and bogged down.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. Too long.

Historia
This exquisite, resonant novel by PEN/Faulkner winner James Salter is a brilliant portrait of a marriage by a contemporary American master. It is the story of Nedra and Viri, whose favored life is centered around dinners, ingenious games with their children, enviable friends, and near-perfect days passed skating on a frozen river or sunning on the beach.

Old school unabashed alpha male
Revisado: 08-07-15
What made the experience of listening to Light Years the most enjoyable?
I love the spare writing style and the unabashed view into the mind of an uncompromised alpha male. It's a rare thing in good literature. Acceptable in MadMen days, but cowed in our age of gender equality. Glad that there is equality, but men and women are NOT the same.
What about Mark Boyett’s performance did you like?
He reflected the personality of the main character very well.

If submission is your thing
Revisado: 08-07-15
Where does Slave Girl of Gor rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Since my marriage has turned D/s, I looked for this book. Yes, it's kind of cheesy fantasy, and really -- Goreans have the ability of interplanetary space travel, but they ride around on birds and fight with swords and knives? But don't let pesky details clutter your guilty pleasures here. John Norman (aka Lange) has some pretty good psychological insights on submissive's emotions and libido (I know I'm not supposed to think that, the Cambridge thought police are on their way, no worries). I've bookmarked a number of great quotes.
What did you like best about this story?
The psychological insights regarding female submission. The guilty erotic pleasure.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Most of the performance was okay, but there are a number of places that feel chopped up or overdubbed and disturb the flow.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Who cares?
Any additional comments?

This personal rendering of Sally's struggle with mania is inspiring. It reveals that the journey is not hers alone, but also tangled with the journeys of her father and others in her family. Told with aching honesty in the voice of the writer, her devoted father.

Historia
The instant New York Times best seller. In the summer of 1989, a Baton Rouge neighborhood best known for cookouts on sweltering summer afternoons, cauldrons of spicy crawfish, and passionate football fandom, is rocked by a violent crime when 15-year-old Lindy Simpson - free spirit, track star, and belle of the block - is attacked late one evening near her home. As the dark side of this idyllic stretch of Southern suburbia is revealed, the close-knit neighborhood is irreversibly transformed.

insufferable
Revisado: 03-30-15
Would you try another book from M.O. Walsh and/or Kirby Heybourne?
I would not try another book by this author. I'd probably give the reader another chance, but no great affection for his voice.
Would you ever listen to anything by M.O. Walsh again?
No. I found the idea the portrayal of the young ones hopelessly naive -- adolescents are simply not that naive these days, with few exceptions. Characters were like idealized or demonized stick figures. Made me wonder about the author's fantasy life.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I guess so. Dragged on and on.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Complete disappointment.
